    Sean Dyche is the new manager of Everton FC. Dyche developed a reputation with Burnley for turgid, but effective football. But as JJ Bull explains he is much more refined than the reputation that precedes him.
    How can he turn Everton’s fortunes around? How will he get the most out of a side with no new mid-season signings?

    Burnley fan here. Nice to see someone on this subject who actually watched us. The only correction I'd make is that we didn't always play with two big number 9s. Danny Ings wasn't that, neither was Andre Gray, Maxwell Cornet or Vydra. I think Dyche actually tried to sign Demarai Gray at Burnley. That said, and I've spent many years defending us and Dyche in various comments sections, after 9 years it got really boring. This season under Kompany is the most fun I've had following Burnley probably ever. I can remember a game last season when I went in the pub after a game (think we lost 2-0 at home) and everyone in the pub was talking about this crisp packet that blew across the pitch halfway through the second half, which tells you everything. I regularly turned games off when we conceded because the game was practically over, or worse I watched someone else on the tv instead. This season, I can't wait until the next game. If I can't make it and it's not on tv, I'm listening to it on the radio, I'm watching all our highlights. I'm glued. You can say it's at a different level but even in the Championship under Dyche it was never fun to watch. I can remember his first full season. We played York City away in the cup. We were shocking and the away end entertained itself with inflatables all game. I can remember saying to a friend we were going down. We finished 2nd. I don't regret it one bit though, what he did for this club was amazing. 7 seasons of Premier League money has transformed the club. I do think he can be as successful at Everton, which for them probably means boring their way into the top 6. I'd take that if I was them.

      This year you're in the Championship and one of the big boys, that's why you're enjoying what you're seeing. Burnley were new to the Prem and couldn't stay in the league for a season until Dyche got there. They've had years of Prem money and parachute payments to put them above Championship level teams. Let's see how long Kompany lasts in the Prem, if you get there, and how long he can last with the same level of investment. You don't have the money or setup to compete in the premier league. Survival is boring yes, but that's the best ANY manager, yes any could ever do with Burnley. He was forced with meager means to adopt a certain way to survive. If you give most managers big money teams then they can afford to be riskier in their style.

      @@zombievikinggaming4258 Which is why I made the comparison with Dyche's promotion teams and not the Premier League. I've seen Burnley win the Championship under Dyche, with parachute payments, spending ÂŁ23m and finishing as top scorers with 23 unbeaten on 93 points. That season wasn't as fun as this one. The Coyle promotion was more fun too with zero Premier League money. We'll see about next season. Maybe we'll do a Norwich, or maybe we'll do a Brighton/Brentford. Time will tell.

      Regarding Dyche and Everton, it is going to be a tough watch at times until the end of the season, but I’ve got a feeling Dyche can turn them around. It will be interesting to see if Dyche will be given time to build at Everton with higher quality players. Can see them ending up like a Simeone Atletico team

    The bit where you showed the team shifting horizontally in defence used to be something Everton were excellent at. Moyes had a training pitch with vertical lines and the team used to practice moving as a unit with a player in each neighbouring channel, so eg a defender in channels 1 through 4, and switch wings, players in 3 through 6.

      West Ham two seasons ago were very adept at pushing the play wide, trapping the opposition and forcing them to cross from deep. Then they'd counter-attack from the clearing header, which how Dawson suddenly went from a rubbish at Watford to a key player for West Ham because he places his headers so well. One of the reasons West Ham have gone off the boil in the last year is because they've stopped doing that so well.

  • @lllPA94lll
    @lllPA94lll Pƙed rokem +16

    Also, worth noting - arguably the biggest weakness of the 442 is the 2 man midfield that can get easily overrun against a 3 man central midfield. Dyche's Burnley overcame this by: a) getting his wide midfielders to play slightly more narrow, limiting the free spaces in the centre, and b) having 2 surprisingly good central midfielders who are capable of simply outworking opposition players. These include Josh Brownhill, in my view the most underrated player in English football. When they went down, I expected a bidding war for his signature. So many teams could be strengthened by having a player of his quality, including at European level. Bizarre watching him drop down to the championship.

    • @areebsiddiqui758
      @areebsiddiqui758 Pƙed rokem +1

      Everton played 3-4-3 for the majority of last season and scraped tough fought results playing ugly football. But the midfield was getting constantly overrun and the only solution was a switch to 4-3-3 which is why Gueye was bought in as a 6. However, he's been absolutely horrific and made so many errors leading to goals. And of course there's Everton's threadbare attack. No manager in the world can turn Maupay into a competent goal scorer, Gray shows flashes of brilliance but isn't consistent enough and DCL has done more modelling in the last two years than he's played football.
      The lack of spending in January, taking the cash for Gordon and the fact that they gave Dyche a 2 and a half year contract points to the fact that the board have accepted that they might get relegated this season and are already preparing for life in the championship.

He'll tolerate no nonsense, but he has excellent man management skills, and Dele could be the perfect 2nd striker in Dyche's system.

    Sean Dyche has done a wonderful job at Burnley for a decade with championship players and a small budget. The problem for Everton is they can't score goals like Wolves and West Ham though defensively they ain't bad. While Dyche doesn't play the most attractive football he can get results even if it's ugly.

    Could we please, for the love of God, have a video on Borussia Dortmund, they're going to go against chelsea, the top spenders in the entire world, who have pretty much purchased an entire first team in last few transfer windows, worth more than bvbs entire squad.
    Please?

    Don't think our squad is that badly suited to playing a 442.
    We've never played DCL and Maupay together for longer than 10 minutes. I'd hope we play them with Gray & Iwobi out wide.
    Gueye was asked to be a 1 man midfield for Lampard, he'll improve under Dyche.
    Tark will be a good defender but I'd be unsure about his partner. Godfrey is reckless and I don't think Coady or Keane are good enough.
    Patterson & Mykolenko were constantly exposed 2v1 under Lampards system, while Gordon, McNeil and Gray never tracked properly, Dyche won't allow this and the space between the fullback and winger will hopefully be tighter.
    I've some hope but I don't think we'll be able to pull 23ish points from 18 matches, but hopefully we can put up a fight.

    I think Everton are going down but by the end of the season will be playing reasonably well as it will take time for Dyche to get his system to work on such a chaotic team. The real question will be what will they do after being relegated. Personally I believe if they keep Dyche they will comfortably bounce back with a team fit for the premier league. If they sack him then I can see them heading into a death spiral mirroring Leeds with a long list of bizarre choices of managers that will probably include Joey Barton.

    So what, so long as whatever they do they keep up? Dyche is the man for that approach. God only knows what Everton were thinking with their signings and Lampard (too inexperienced and probably out of his depth). Dyche: Been there done that. Only reason Burnley went down was they had to sell players and eventually it catches up (See Leicester). But he kept EPL footie for so long on a tiny budget. Fairly amazing.

    Some good points there but I also disagree on a couple of things: I dont see M. Keane coming back in, neither do I see Gray as a second striker, Maupay more likely or even Simms. Coleman is also too old to be a regular, Patterson wont necessarily drop in my opinion. Midfield of Onana - Gueye is also questionable, as both are nothing like guys like Cork or Westwood that Dyche liked. Garner could be an option or even Iwobi as Dyche likes runners there who are comfy on the ball. Iwobi while lacking productivity in the final third does these two things well and has a decent eye for balls in behind. I could see Gueye being dropped. If we play 4-4-2 I reckon something like Pickford; Myko/Godfrey - Mina/Coady - Tarky - Patterson; Iwobi/Garner - Onana/Gueye - McNeil/Townsend - Gray (dont know which player on what side to be honest, I can see both scenarios, probably Gray on the left, McNeil/Townsend right); Dom - Maupay.
    This team would have question marks in midfield and and the wide areas going forward but could be solid defensively, and might bring out the best in the two strikers. DCL and Maupay have to resemble to Wood-Barnes duo in order for Everton to have a chance.

    • @tobi-gh5uy
      @tobi-gh5uy Pƙed rokem

      @@NorfolkCatKickers Yes, I have been thinking this, but really dont know where. On paper, getting Doucouré back to what he was under Ancelotti and in the early days of Benitez would be great. He might actually be a candidate for the 'Jeff Hendrick' role which in my set-up would be the second striker whod then play deeper. Out of the midfield players we have he is actually one of the more capable ones in terms of scoring a goal. Still, to think he d be our 2nd most advanced player would also be somewhat depressing.
