True to yourself.... remain true to yourself while writing for publication..... that is the most difficult and courageous thing to do. Naipaul did it mostly in his writing! One of the Greats!

V.S. Naipaul was awarded the Nobel for the two books on converted Islamic societies soon after 9/11. Suddenly the Western Societies took serious notice of his excellent and powerful warnings! Prior to 9/11 no one paid any attention to his writings! 'Among the believers' is indeed a masterpiece !

Quite true! Actually he is so prophetic in his writings! The discourse that we in India are having these days is something he had been writing about since 70s!

I have "Among the Believers" here with me. I admit I bought it because I am so intrigued by VS Naipaul as a writer and as a person just as I am fascinated by Pico Iyer's intelligence.

I think the interviewer did a terrible job at re-telling her question to Naipaul. She meant that Indians require compassion from and towards each other given the social-political environment at present, but the interviewer twisted the sense of the question and Naipaul understood as Indians requiring passion from the outside world. That is why he is irritated and asks her, "why do you need compassion more than other people, more than any other country?".
