And if he doesn't get his leg snapped he probably would have won some more before his decline. Izzy can beat Du Plessis, though he will have to improve his offensive striking. One of the things that made Silva so great was that he could move between the low guard counter-striking, using odd angles and precision, to karate-style blitzes that would push you up against the cage. His boxing was simply better than Izzy's. Now that doesn't mean Izzy doesn't have it in him. He probably has the best distance management with his kicks and counter jab/check hook in MMA. But there are times in fights (Whittaker II/Cannonier/Strickland) where if he had challenged his opponents forward movement he would have had (even) more success. This is the concept of control. All high level strikers use some form of control in between strikes which is a big part of how they manipulate positioning. If all you do is strike without controlling where your opponent is going, you are vulnerable to attack and you’re also less likely to land. If you can control their position, you always know where they are, they’re unable to explode into an attack, and you can find them easily with your own strikes. Control is a core fundamental of striking.

Anderson Silva dominated for years. His fight IQ was so much higher that he was able to make opponents who were physically more imposing than him, look ridiculous. It's all about commitment to the craft/discipline. Great martial artist.

He’s still got some of my favorite highlight reels of any fighter yet. The way he’d ever so slightly move out of the way of punches and kicks was incredible.
