  • In this video, we will show how to hardwire the 5-volt rear view mirror or dash camera to a 12-volt fuse box without the use of step down converter in the 2019 Toyota RAV4. This operation is done by using the 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter extension cord. This way you will be able to retain the original adapter that comes with the device. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is used as an example but this method will work in any vehicle.

Thank you for this video. I hard wired a Nextbase cam some time ago by cutting off the plug and wiring direct into appropriate 12v fuse, it didn't work and that's when I found the plug is a 5v adapter! I ended up pulling adapter out of the plug case and soldering extra wires to the input side. Worked fine but a bit of a faff. Hadn't thought of using a socket extender. Good idea but worry it might come loose.

The Rav4s seem to be prone to parasitic drain of the 12v battery (hybrid and gas). How has your experience been?

thank you for the video. the only problem i have is that the connection to the cigarette extension becomes loose after some time. even if it is taped down as best possible, the connection seems to become loose and makes the camera turn off and on. and i have the same problem on two cars that are wired the same way.
Is this a normal problem? I was thinking to replace the cigarette lighter extension with a 12v to 5v converted so i can then crimp the wires more securely. Any advice?

Can you explain again how did you find the hotwire on adaptor? Im a little confused, can you list down the things that you used, thank you for sharing.

We are going to use ordinary extension cord for cigarette lighter instead of step down converter . Before cutting off the "plug" end of that cord we have to find wire that supplying 12 volts. In the middle of the cord- split two wires from each other, remove isolator shield on both wires. Now you need a tester or probe. Keep bare wires apart, plug in that cord into cigarette lighter socket( ignition - on). Connect probe or tester to bare wires one at a time to find + 12v. That is the "Hot Wire" . Mark it .
To finish hardwiring you need "Female" end of the extension cord, so cut off the plug end, just watch for the Mark that you have left on Hot wire. Connect Fuse Tap to the Hot wire and Ground ring connector to the neutral wire. Done.
Before starting all of that you need define proper length of the extension cord to hide it safely under dashboard panels .
      Good luck.

You're still using a step down converter that came with the camera... you're just plugging it into a different socket that you tapped into the fuse box instead of the car's cigarette lighter.
