naa in the UK we were on dial up back then and teamspeak was nearly 2 years away, the community was very small you saw the same people over and over - dialing in direct to the wireplay servers was so much better that the cesspool public servers are now.

Same for me, born exactly 20 years ago... but i am nowhere near to being as good as him... i mean he got a 9 year headstart as i only started playing CS in 2016 compared to 2007... So i basically have 9 years to catch up... i'll let you know how things are going in 2029 xD

"Counter-Terrorist Forces" would be shortened to "CTF", and that was back in the era of arena shooters, where "CTF" was already well established as "capture-the-flag".
Truly, Cliffe was the voice of reason throughout the development, always suggesting iconic edits to mappers (such as moving spawn points on the original de_dust) and other co-devs that then defined the game as we know it.
Can't believe it's been 20 years already. I remember being 11 and my cousin showing me this awesome new game called Counter-Strike around the summer of 2000. Rest is history.

I just loved technological minecraft mods as a kid :), otherwise, I don't know what would be odd about it :D

That... that's honestly how it should work. Burst would become a such more integral part of the glock if you didn't have to RMB then LMB. Never imagined a glock that worked like that before as a CS:GO player.
I thought valorant did this thing correctly/better than csgo, now i realise it was yet another copied feature from cs 😂
I think "RMB to fire burst" will be inconsistent with other weapons which toggle scope & toggle silencer.

I remember in early 2000s game stores would be packed because people and kids would play cs 1.6, original half life, team fortress classic, vampire slayer etc. The store lasted until 2019 when it closed and let me tell you....in these 19 years that store was pretty popular and in early and mid 2010s people were still playing those games. And the most incredible thing is that it all happened in a small town in Serbia where noone basically plays games

can't get my head around the fact the cs_siege remake is almost 8 years old already. that's 40% of the time span the whole counter strike franchise exists. that sounds so unreal!
also, is CSGO now actually the longest installation of the series without a successor being announced or released?
I think source and csgo are tied, source came out 04 and go came out 2012, but go is gonna beat it out really soon.

I know I'm 2 years late and no one reads comments but I played all of these alphas growing up, literally the best/happiest moments of my life. Often think back to those times
Perhaps, its either us just missing the old days about ourselves like ancient Sumerians did so back in 3000 B.C or times were really just better than what we go through now. Speaking for myself, it is the years 2008-2013 that are true nostalgia for me. Yet can't imagine how fun and blissful times you may have had through all those nostalgic times spanning from the new millenia.

Please play the rest of the versions, they would be amazing to see. Up to 1.6. I remember the 1.5 version in cybercafes, it was amazing.

Lolz Sometimes when i get bored i play cs1.6 in a wooden computer with bots. LOL
I was contacted to make a map for CS back around beta 1! I had a map on Radium too (for TFC) so that's probably why I got contacted. Back then they wanted security cameras on all the levels so it was a plus if you included them.
Beta 1 was an absolute blast by the way, definitely ready for release! The trickiest thing was that you couldn't turn off friendly fire and the player models looked so similar, there was certainly lots of TKing.
N0TH1NG was the best mapper by far (siege, docks) , may he rest in peace.

Beta 5.2 and Beta 6.1 still have players and a Discord server. I'm most attracted by the fact you have unlimited speed bhopping myself.

Woah dude... you just unearthed a literal 'glitch in the matrix' memory of mine, which I find out today wasn't me hallucinating at all... cs_mansion, I played that fucking map to death with my brother ! Only him and I remember it and we never really thought it was a mansion for some reason. Ty for the memories and the really well made timeline !
@@IsmailofeRegime cs_estate was a different map that slowly got very complicated with a bunch of cosmetics and a bigger sewer, cs_mansion was the older, simpler one, that I think was more popular.

I thought mansion was still playable on the final release, I remember playing it in 1.6
It definitely was. people also created many variations of the map over the years.
That was cs_estate - basically just improved cs_mansion

My dad had a lanhouse in 2003/2004 with like, at least 12 different versions of the map installed on cs 1.5
There has been a few versions of mansion throughout the betas. I think around 6 different ones, but I could be off.
I'd love for this to continue as a series. Looking back on old CS versions and seeing how it evolved over time.

The modding environment back then felt a bit more alive than now, kinda sad.
I blame the death of internet forums. Now it's all Discord (where you can only talk to people who are there that very second) or Reddit (where even the most active threads cycle off the front page in just a few days at most). So you either make the whole thing yourself or get fucked.
Well yeah making goldsrc maps is way more fun that making cs:go maps or source maps

We need to be thankful to them two they created the legendary Counter Strike no matter what CS you play or played we need to respect them two without them no Counter Strike games.
I was there in action quake 2 and cs beta. Actually, i was there in quake 1 in 1996. I'm old, this video made me incredibly nostalgic :'( Time goes by so fast, its unfair.

cs_mansion was massively popular on south america because it was based on a hostage situation on Peru back on late 1996. You can still find several peruvian 1.6 servers that have it 24/7.

I love how nowadays most mods just make you do all of this playing with files yourself, with many having bad instructions so you get confused and sometimes have to reinstall the whole game but this one actually has a legit installation
Thanks for bringing up Action Quake. It used to be one of my favourite games, and it already had many of the weapons we now have in Counter-Strike.
I've spent whole nights with siege and mansion in beta 3. Absolutely ridiculous maps by today's standards but legendary

Siege looked like this forever, they also added a APC for the counter-terrorists, sige was a great and fun map cause it was so different, combination of really wide and open areas and tight tunnels and bunkers.

It's odd seeing this video. Brings back memories. I played this game for over 5 years from beta through to 1.6. Oddly enough I became a video game developer and have spoken with Minh Le a few times on Facebook. He's working on an Unreal Engine 5 game currently and I help him out sometimes.

Many thanks for the memory trip. I've been playing cs since beta. Also, you might take a look at Ricochet? That was another hl mod that came i think the same time. It quickly died, but it was like competitor to Unreal Tournament and quake2 mods. And I'm pretty sure there was some more mods I cant remember anymore, but Ricochet is definitely one I can remember and it was quite fun.
I loved Ricochet! Sadly not many people played it even back then. I still have it though. And by these other mods you mean stuff like Deathmatch Classic or Day of Defeat?
It’d be fascinating to see a series of this as you go up through some of the betas and eventually to 1.6. Highlighting some of the key changes in each.
Not sure how doable that is and if it’s even possible to still download every version of the game. I also am sure it’s an enormous amount of effort so I understand if it doesn’t seem worth it haha

I installed the beta just in time for the 1.0 release and played mansion, siege (with the ACP the CTs drove across the bridge), along with many others. Cobblestone and inferno were my favorites.

Thank you lord Philip for always doing this kind of videos, when watching them I often find myself thinking "that’s why counter strike is legendary and would be hard to be defeated by any other game in terms of legacy" I also find myself thinking "when watching his videos I can’t help but feel the real passion for the game and not the pa$$ion that everyone has in mind when it comes to skins or saying that valve are only caring about throwing new cases at us"
