One of my favorite Yes songs! Squire's bass is INSANE! The growling, the groaning; no one else does that to a bass.
This album is always wrongly marginalized and maligned. I love the clarity of it, and the bookending of the opening and closing tracks that are so strong!

I was still new to Yes when this album came out. The one thing that I remember is that it sounded so futuristic. It sounded like the future of rock music to me. Little did I know that new wave would be coming around the corner and would smash this direction.

The '78 tour was fantastic! Seek out some shows on YT, they were amazing. The round & rotating stage at the center of the hall was cool. I've always loved this album. Thanks!

Re: the internal dynamics, by 1978 Jon was more interested in the kind of thing he'd done on 'Olias of Sunhillow' (and would soon do with Vangelis on 'Short Stories'), while Chris, Steve, and Alan were gravitating toward an earthier, rock-based approach. You'll hear the tension between those two directions all over this album. Yeah, Rick was a drinker (as he would later joke he drank for the British Olympic team back in those days) and tended to side with Jon, and followed him out the door when Jon left in early 1980.
Yes got through making this album (what, no mention about the wonderful sleeve art? 😉), and what saved them was that the tours for the next two years were hugely successful. Yes by then had built up a loyal fan base, plus a reputation for spellbinding live shows. BTW, a concert video has been released from the 1979 tour in Philadelphia if you want a look at this edition of Yes on the round stage.
Looking ahead, when Yes went back into the studio later in '79 and in early 1980 all the old grievances came out again (this time money was a major bone of contention). They tried working with Roy Thomas Baker and put down tracks for a bunch of new songs (which can be heard on various box sets and reissues), but in reality Yes was just tired. They were a spent force by that point, struggling to find a relevant path forward in the late 70's. You can also hear some of that struggle on this album, which is why it has more of a 'kitchen sink' quality as compared to previous albums.

very cool soundscape, but another sonically dense album. this track, Release Release and Silent Wings of Freedom are classic prog.
best lineup and live shows from this era.
i think this is them at their best, and the lead of songs switches back from guitar to keys.
but once you learn the studio tracks, the grooves are fantastic. but if you dont yet know all the switchups youll lose the groove.
i dont play music but i love this stuff cause the replayability is good

Rick: Everything was going well and then we did the Tormato album in 1978, which was potentially one of the best Yes albums ever. But it suffered from appalling production... The whole thing ended up so compressed it was tragic... Tempers got frayed sometimes, but that's normal. It always gets worked out in the end. I think Yes agrees on the music it should play, but mixes are another story.
Steve: To mix the tracks we had to tear each other's hair out... we had a flatter sound than usual. We were trying to produce ourselves and we sometimes paid the price... Tormato was a complex thing with lots of ideas that never got heard because there was no room for them.

Lots of great playing & music that only YES could create, but at the time, I was initially disappointed having loved their momentum towards epics like RELAYER. The slight deviation on GFTO to the full transition to shorter songs on TORMATO alienated me from YES even further. Also, because by 77, there were other newer GREAT Prog & Fusion bands competing for my attention & interest. Its main flaw is that it does not include an epic song. Years later, I truly began to appreciate the overall skill, virtuosity, creativity, and quirky uniqueness of TORMATO.

I gotta say, when I recently heard the live versions of songs from the video footage of the Tormato tour, (which is very good quality audio by the way) I felt as though the energy and power of these songs was hitting the way they were meant to. The studio production of Tormato was generally cluttered and shrill. But man, did they ckme smackin hard live. Its too bad they didn't release more of those live tracks.

I’m the odd man out on this one, but I like this album more than GFTO. It’s more rocking, love Chris’s bass and Alan’s drums. Rick’s keyboards are different but I like how he utilizes the sounds. It’s a more playful album.

Tormato is not a bad album. In fact, YES does not have a bad album. Although without Anderson and Wakeman, the new Yes albums are weak. They lack the punch and soul that the previous works had, except DRAMA, which is a very good album. In fact, the actual group should be called something else, not Yes.
Over time you discover that Tormato was another new steering wheel turn or sound register leaving behind prog and moving closer to short songs. Sonically it was more modern, getting a little closer to 90125. At least that's what the members said at that time: down with the long chords! The music scene had changed. There was punk, AOR, New Age... and they called them "dinosaurs". Pink Floyd, Genesis... they took a break and came back in another way.
But there was a previous album that never came out. It was supposed to be called TANGO and it was another idea of Anderson's approaching South American sounds.
In Tormato I think the group was tired or they wanted to experiment with new things. Rick had published several very successful albums with choir, orchestra and actors, which ruined him financially. Anderson published new solo albums and began his successful collaboration with Jon and Vangelis. Steve published other solo albums.
Howe's albums are good from the point of view of experimentation. They are containers of various ideas. They are not conceptual albums. His first two: Beginnings and The Steve Howe Album have soul. And he doesn't sing worse than B Dylan sings.
As for Tormato, Offord had addiction problems. And the members argued about issues such as: Anderson preferred to record in the morning because he had the cleanest and strongest voice and Steve preferred at night because his hands were more skillful and less sleepy from playing all day. The one who always had control of the band was Chris. He always made them play one more time before leaving to round out the songs. That's what they explained. Anderson was always more of an artistic director, the one who provided the ideas, like McCartney in the Beatles. Steve thrives when he's in a group that discusses ideas with him, and Jon did.Thats the good result.

Yeah 1978-79 was a confusing time for music and Yes we're up against punk new wave and tons of new technology and a bit floundering and worn out.
You had Van Halen coming up, bands like Boston and Aerosmith were all over the radio, and here comes Yes with their weirdness and what feels like a somewhat nauseating ride on a psychotic merry go round
A lot of us were just done with the band for awhile.
Years later of course as usual, many many listens again, this is actually a great little batch of songs, and there is some magic in it.
Just REALLY hard to ignore the sound quality of putting soup cans on your ears 🫤🤦 no matter how many Remasters they've done, nothing can totally correct the huge Dolby error.
Thanks for doing this one Bro and I appreciate hearing your perspectives as a fellow musician ✌️

The beginning of this song pair is a great way to start the album, it brings you in immediately. Over all not one of their better albums, but still some gems on this one. I like 'Onward' and 'Silent wings of Freedom' and while 'Circus of Heaven' gets a lot of crap from Yes fans, I like it as it is fun to sing along with it. The production sound on this album is a steady improvement; we get a good clarity of all of the instruments, even during the densest parts.

I can say this album was really great in concert that year. It was my first concert ever and me and my buddies had a great road-trip at 15-16 over to Fort Worth as Dallas at that time had no arena for shows that size. I enjoyed the album when it came out but like so many others I rarely listen to the whole thing anymore. On the Silent Wings of Freedom and Release, Release are really the only ones I listen to anymore. The sound is more clear than Going for the One but still too bright for me. But live it was glorious.

I listen to this album less than any other Yes album. There are really only two songs that I genuinely love, the rest I could really just live without. The original version of the album simply sounded thin and kind of tinny, probably the fault of some of the keyboard sounds, the remaster made things better from a sonic perspective, but laid bear the composing problems that they had at the time. I genuinely want to like this album, and I give it a chance every so often, it just keeps disappointing me. On a separate note, there are still several epics in the discography if you are willing to go all the way up through the 90s and even into the 2000s with Yes; in particular, the studio content on the Keys to Ascension albums, and Magnification.

A lot of people cite _Going For The One_ as the last great Yes album of the "Classic Yes" period. _Tormato_ is not as good compared to all the great output they created from 71 to 77, but it's not bad either. It's still a perfectly serviceable Yes album. And there are some really nice tracks on the album: "Madrigal", "Release Release", "Onward" and "On the Silent Wings of Freedom". The next album, _Drama,_ they would go back to using Roger Dean for the artwork.

With no producer, I can see why there would have been more debate and indecision among the members. This hits upon the reason Bill Bruford left Yes for King Crimson. During the recording of Close to the Edge, Bruford described the sessions as being filled with endless debate about such things as which instruments should play what parts and in what key. He left Yes after recording CTTE and joined a band with a more ominous sound, but less inclined to waste time discussing and debating.

For me, it's the complete opposite. I've never liked Going for the One, either because of its songs, which never appealed to me, or its reverb-soaked production.
Even if Wakeman's keyboards sometimes clash with Steve Howe's guitar, I prefer the general atmosphere of Tormato, which finally breaks away from the typical Yes sound, and the opener "Future Times’/‘Rejoice" sets the tone for the album (which probably won't be to everyone's taste!). Personally, this is one of my favourite Yes albums, along with Fragile, Relayer and Drama.

I like this album, but the sound quality is lets it down. It lacks depth and space and is a bit high pitched for me. Also, the digital synth is no match for the analog moog, as it sounds tinny (as tin can) and devoid of emotion. This is an album I wish they would have re-recorded properly. Musically, I get what they are doing based on the "New Age" concept theme and searching for new directions while still being essentially "hippie" at heart..
