Thanks so much for this excellent video! My club has both a J80 and J70, and I’m learning to use the assym spin. Your sequences of instruction are super, super helpful, and I’ve repeated them over and over to get the feel of what’s happening (I’m a new skipper). And yes, J70 is lighter and more ‘delicate’, so having crew helps!
I noticed you mentioned the ‘cool factor’ several times, and I just want to add that this is all about ego, which is not cool if safety of crew and boat is compromised! 😮

Thank you for watching! The J70 and J80 are wonderful boats! The "cool factor" is all about looking "cool" while being 100% safe! Those comments were made when I did something wrong, thus potentially creating an unsafe or more challenging situation - which is NOT cool! I had an ego death ages ago, so no real ego here! I just like to sail, and minimize risk and mistakes. The "cool factor" is my scale for acknowledges mistakes and learning from them. Happy sailing to you!

Thanks Cawfee Dawg. I had only one set/take down prior to filming but it all went well. Sailing solo required me to slow everything down step by step. With a crew, you can perform each gybe/task four times faster. Sorry I couldn't add commentary or music. My children were sleeping when I slapped the footage together and didn't want to wake them. Next time there will be a voice over! Sail fast!
I sail a J80 with my brother... I was always told it's impossible to sail alone, I'm impressed! Great skill!
Federico, Thanks for checking out the video. The J80 is a great boat. Practice with the spinnaker and give it a try solo! It is a lot of fun and a nice challenge.
Black Rock Sailing School You use the spi alone?? Without the jib I suppose?
You hoist the spinnaker before you furl the jib up, and unfurl the jib before dousing the spinnaker so that the jib blankets the spinnaker and makes it easier to manage by depowering it.

Now I'd like to see a video like this for the J/70!!! The J/70 should be easier...right? I have owned a J/80 and that has a LOT of sail area. I'm thinking about buying a J/70 in my old age and most people say that that boat is under powered so it should be a little easier...right? I had my J/80 20 years ago and I used to sail it alone a lot. Anyway, nice job on THIS video!!!
Rod, Thank you. Yes, the J/70 would probably be a LOT easier to manage singlehanded. Smaller, lighter loads, and just as easy to sail. Looking back, I wish I had put a bit more effort into this video. My kids were asleep right next to me, so I couldn't add a voice over and music, etc. - and I was too eager to get something posted in the limited spare time that I had. Anyway, I am glad that you enjoyed watching. This video was the 2nd run that I had ever singlehanded the J/80 - thus the fresh excitement when I found that things were pretty easy to manage. I would highly recommend going for it on the J/70! They are GREAT boats!
It depends on conditions. J70 is a very overdoseres boat and is very unforgiving if you dont have someone with you to put weight ok the side of the boat. I would say the j80 is would be easier

Don't you know how to steer with your knees,frees up your hands.. You should be standing also.
I believe in balance and control and prefer to minimize standing as much as possible. With the tiller extension, you can trim quite well, as if you were trimming the main on a Laser, while maintaining control without stumbling around.
So what you'e saying I take it you don't know how and you're clumsy? I'm sure if you practiced at it you'd get okay at it, but look at your own video look how you're fighting with the lines and tiller a j80 is a very stable boat also don't know what a laser has anything to do about this? Your in boston right? Maybe I could come down and show how to gybe single handed it's nothing new thats how must single handers with tillers do it.
