Hi Phil, thank you so much for doing this, it was so interesting to see the results! (I believe I've indirectly achieved my average 15 minutes of fame as well now, lol!) Super glad those didn't cause any problems w your freeze dryer either! (I assume! I'm still too new to even have an idea of what substances can do what) I realized after leaving the initial comment - and I guess this is commentary on our modern era - I guess in most instances you could just use bar soap or powdered dish / laundry detergent unless you're insistent on a particular brand / blend of ingredients, however FD could be an excellent option for conditioner or lotion (I'm not aware of a 'dry' form of those?). From a creative / potential business perspective, you could get some artistic deep silicone molds and freeze dry some giftables (again, thinking primarily of conditioners / lotions)? Thanks again for taking the time to do this vid, I'm so glad you & your equipment all came out safe on the other side (!) and have a great week!! 🙂 ~ Jill in DFW
I think this would be VERY useful if you travel frequently and need to pack compactly as well as get thru the TCA at any airport, where most Liquids are prohibited..they would have to be labeled or I'm sure they'd hold you for smuggling contraband!
Could maybe see this being useful for frequent hardcore backpackers or remote fly-in type vacation goers, where per-person weight limits are often imposed...however...buying a $3k unit + paying for all the electricity that an FD uses, wouldn't make much sense financially or from a time/prep perspective, especially considering how a wide variety of powdered soap, detergent, and food items are so readily available...and yes...could definitely see issues arising with air travelers/international travelers being pulled aside to explain their freeze-dried "powdered" items - lol -
Be aware: Water isn't the only thing that evaporates. Fragrances, light oils, alcohols and solvents will also evaporate. These may deteriorate your vacuum pump oil.
Wow, can non-food items actually cause issues with the fd unit itself(?) (ie) If one were to FD non-food items, is it possible "future" FD'd food items could impart a scent or chemical taste of the previously FD'd non-food items(?)
I think the proof is in the pudding. They’re selling us water. I use shampoo and conditioner bars. I make my own soap and shampoo bars. No success with a conditioner bar, but purchased terra pure conditioner bar and have been very happy with it. Dropps dishwasher pods, and Tru Earth laundry detergent delivered in a cardboard box. Check out these or similar no water products. I will be setting up my freeze dryer tomorrow. Just perusing other freezer drying sites. 💙
Oxygen absorber do not contain moisture. Oxygen absorbers do heat up a little bit and may cause any moisture in your jars to turn to condensate. It sounds like your food isn't dry enough. It needs to be under 10% moisture. You may need to redry your food.
If you're having problems in glass, I think you'll have the same issue with bags. You should contact your local extension office. If you don't have one contact: extension.usu.edu/preserve-the-harvest/
Do not do this while your Harvest Right warranty is still in effect! Many scents are oil based and will leave the food/product. Had that happen with mint chocolate chip ice cream bars in the dryer.
The freeze-dried results + reconstitution with water is exactly what I was hoping to see... very well done!!

Rats! I could've added lotion to the test.
You'll be immortalized.
Most soaps and conditioners contain tallow so they will not dry. You have to get the manufactures contents sheet MSDS to know for sure.
You really wanted to be a scientist.... So cool you check this stuff out. Awesome! 😊
Oh this gave me the idea to do toothpaste! Since it's only good for a year. Thanks!!
Let me know how it turns out.
Very interesting

Good reason

This was one of those days when I wanted to see if it could be done. I changed my oil and cleaned my chamber after the cycle.
Interesting...indeed.
Very interesting to learn this information. how did the oil in your pump fare with these products?
I'm running tests on the ice from the chamber and water trapped. in the oil. Results soon.

I would of told them to buy one and try it. I would never put non food in my FD. 3k for it is not worth the risk
Interesting... what are the risks exactly(?)

unfortunately, we are buying the water...in more ways than one.
Try a few bars of soap.
Very interesting however, it is very useless to freeze dry any of these items unless indeed you are going to the moon,
Glad you did though. Thanks
hello just wondering, is it bad if my oxygen absorbers cause condensation in my mason jar?

@@Philat4800feet Do you think moisture can happen to beans or rice inside Mylar bags?

I just don't see the point of FDing these things. They usually keep for years anyway. But it was a interesting experiment.
This is what happens when I get bored
I'm hoping you didn't label your trays with permanent marker.
Comes off with a little rubbing alcohol.

This was more for fun than being practical.
