Don't forget that Westminster (under PM Cameron) promised a LOT more to Scotland if they remained (more devolved powers, more subsidies, etc) and then IMMEDIATELY backtracked on them all.
Actually, the âVowâ was never detailed, so itâs extremely difficult to prove the UK government backtracked on anything.
The Scots were asked to take Westminsterâs word on âextensive new powersâ on trust. That was a massive mistake by independence supporters, since it allowed Westminster to define what that meant. Nothing is more important to a Lasting Order in the Middle East than a Kurdish Republic. The only reason there is not one today is because of European meddling and an Indifferent USA.
But, My Guy..... As a Canadian.... you cant call it Kurdistan. You just can't. Do the Kurds want international consensus that Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria need to be cut up so their Kurdish lands are a part of a United and Sovreign Kurdish Republic? Got to call it something that does not invoke chaos, or a theocratic body politic.
Don't worry about Turkey.... They have been belligerent since the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and are probably a few more childish threats away from getting their teeth kicked in by their own allies.

I wouldn't go that far, but it is noticeable.
About the QuĂ©bec Referendums, you failed to mention that at both, the federal government cheated by telling lies or by illegally over-paying for electoral expenses without any repercussions. You also failed to tell that the reduced support is because the federal government is imposing immigration quotas on the province of QuĂ©bec that are not only unrealistically high but also because the immigrants come from either english speaking countries or are welcomed by english speaking people who tell lies to get the new citizens to be afraid of the separation. The result is that the province is slowly anglicized, english speaking people being against separation in a kind of population replacement (which was tried a few times without success). The methods used by the federal government are unjust or in some cases simply illegal, but the courts will not really punish them, and they continue to keep QuĂ©bec citizens in their country by repeatedly lying and cheating. One of the reasons for the QuĂ©bec citizens wanting to separate from Canada is that historically, the english people have always tried to make the French speaking people disappear by deportation or by waging war on them but have so far failed to do so. There are a lot of bad things that English people have done to French people over the years (deportations, massacres, destruction), and although they are not as destructive as theyâve been, their goal is still the same, make French speaking people disappear from Canada.

Much of the history with most independence movements are like this..
1. Minority group gets mistreated, so they want independence
2. Majority group cracks down and treats them even worse for wanting to be independent
3. Minority group wants independence even more because of that.
Maybe people wouldnât want to leave if you didnât treat them like crap
Greatly summed up.
Although I feel like this calls for a 2.5 and a 4.
2.5. Majority group would have something big, maybe even huge to lose (resources, geostrategic positions, influence, diplomacy ties, you name it) and so don't violently hold on to the minority out of the sheer goodness of their heart; while citizens from the majority almost always cry about how they pay _fortunes_ (FORTUNES, I TELL YOU... even if the minority barely sees any of it usually) for the peasants in the minority without taking into account what the majority is gaining out of it.
4. The Majority and its citizens will spend an obscene amount of time all year long, for entire lifetimes sometimes, belittling the Minority and anything related to it, mock it, insult it, dehumanize it and wish evil stuff on it sometimes, all while reminding it how it costs them _oh so much_ but will laugh at and ridiculize any mention of independence or greater autonomy because, like every bona fide abusive husband, "you're nothing without me, what will you do anyway, you have nothing, you owe me, blah blah blah" but freaking out big time deep down when the wife talks about leaving.
Yeah if you based in on only known and accepted history. There is always a possibility that even the minority start the violence first, forcing the legitimate government to respond
Yeah if you based it on known and accepted history. There is always a possibility that the separatist are the one who start the violence first, forcing the legitimate government to respond
@@ghjuTrue. It basically just comes down to bigotry and illogical thinking. Even putting ethics aside, itâs more logical to strive for equality and integration from economic and stability point of view for several reasons.
1. The majority group tends to exploit whatever natural resource in the area at the detriment of whoever is living there because they just care about profit, but they fixate too much on short term profit. Dealing with the inevitable uprising is going to be a lot costlier and could cut you off from the resource.
2. Barring an entire region of segment of your population from opportunities will just deprive you of anything those people could contribute to the economy otherwise if they were given the opportunity to grow.
@@thedapperdolphin1590 Personally speaking, the bigotry I don't really care about to be perfectly honest.
Humans -- all of us, to various degrees, no exceptions -- have been idiots for as long as our species has existed so I'm definitely _not_ gonna lose sleep over whatever a stranger thinks of me, my background or how I live, what my values and traditions are etc. Let alone one who seems to have a miserable existence and complains about their own nation 24/7 đ
Yeah, I'm a peasant and they're part of the civilization. Congrats? Idc, go on about your own life and let me be. Once shtf I hope they think about us when all they have to eat is their paper and digital numbers lol.
What I do have a problem with however, is the illogical thinking part. Or better put, the hypocrisy. Because I think illogical thinking is more often than not just playing dumb, a cover for the absolute shame that saying "granted, I hate you, but I don't want you to leave though. We have too many benefits and advantages from exploiting you and/or controlling you to lose" would bring. Rare are those honest enough to own up to having that kind of colonial mindset and they never do it in your face, always online.
In my specific context it would also be a case of "it would inconvenience me greatly to have to get a passport, obey your own voted laws and spend more for my next door holiday. Don't worry, we'll soon go back to loathing you for the other 10/11 months of the year, but for a short while we'll enjoy everything you have, make your locals' life miserable and still find a way to complain about it, about you and literally everything in existence".
I mean, when they call your people's and ancestors' home their country's "đ tanning spot" during summertime and a "leech" place that needs "some serious beating from law enforcement" the rest of the time because there are graffitis calling for their departure (what can I say, we like street art đ€·đ»ââïž) or reps so much as dare speaking their own language in their own assembly building, then rejoice when tragedies hit (including deaths) and make the news cycles, you know everything you need to đ€Ș
Luckily some still have a brain and some modicum or decency/morals and understand that letting us exist as ourselves would appease many, MANY things, but unfortunately they too, are the minority in their own way.
Anyway, sorry for the tangent/rant. It's the politician in me lol đ
I feel like many of us around the world can somewhat share some of these feelings being on the minority side, regardless of the specificities of each place. Every single one that has an independence desire is clearly not out of nowhere. And as you said, the more the majority reinforces that nuisance and its attitude of disdain and superiority, the more independence desires and movements grow.
Anyway, have a good day/night wherever you are đđ»ââïž

Indonesian here, i don't think West Papua will be independent for several reason.
1. West Papua independence movement or 'OPM' is divided into various factions that have their own personal goals, each faction wants itself to be in charge of the entire island, making full-scale organized resistance against the TNI almost impossible.
2. Indonesia will not allow its islands to become independent because Papua is part of Indonesia's sovereign territory almost the same as Alaska is part of USA, there is not a single Indonesian politician who is crazy enough to commit political suicide by supporting the second referendum in West Papua.
3. The movement is not very popular with the Papuan people anyway, especially Papuans who live in urban and coastal areas, only those living in the highland and inland areas supported the independence movement, and their support is decreasing every day because OPM is constantly raiding small villages and towns in search of food/supplies to fuel their operations.

QuĂ©bĂ©cois french speaker from greater MontrĂ©al here. Itâs absolutely true that support for independence amongst the younger generations is much lower, compared to the older, even though the mouvement never really died. But, as of right now, even if independence seems really unlikely since the movement lost its momentum of the 20th century, itâs an interesting fact that the highest polling party for the next QuĂ©bec provincial elections is the pro independence party, the Parti quĂ©bĂ©cois. I personally think that most younger citizens are relatively satisfied with the degree of autonomy that QuĂ©bec has, so they just donât really see the benefit. But I think it should be noted that itâs because of the older generations that fought for QuĂ©becâs greater autonomy from Canada that we today have this level of autonomy that most people are relatively comfortable with, notably with linguistic laws, immigration and judicial system just to name a few.
If Scotland and Quebec don't get independence soon, it will become a third world country

Some notes on Catalonia/Basque Country:
+ In Catalonia there were two call outs for a referendum in 2009-2011 and 2014, but the legal body was watered down along the process.
+ Part of the boost the independence movement got in Catalonia was due to the crisis. Cat has always been a left-leaning territory and the capitalist crisis of 2008 (2010 onwards for Spain) shook the arena. Artur Mas saw his right wing govt in danger both due to demonstrations and corruption investigations, so, he pushed for independence as an escape strategy.
+ The autonomy setups in Spain are not exclusive to BC/Cat, every region has one. This was done in an attempt to avoid those regions from feeling special and claiming further rights in the future.
+ The only region with a historical legal right that rules over other spanish's laws is Nafarroa/Navarra. For instance, they collect their own taxes. This partially explains why Euskadi/Pais Vasco also has the capacity to collect their own taxes. Yes, the naming is confusing. Basque Country / Euskal Herria = Navarra/Nafarroa + Euskadi/Pais vasco + Iparralde.
+ Elections were just held in Euskadi a few days ago and pro-independence parties got majority, but both did without explicit calls to referendums in a near future.
(Not a critique, both parts of the videos are neatly documented, but there are some small nuances that are hard to know and put in context from outside).
Slava đčđŒ
Gora euskadi!
By the way.. what (or who) dictates who has or not rights on anything? Catalonia had its OWN PARLIAMENT and institutions, which of course were banned by the spanish government more than once throughout history.
And the reason why there was that new uprisal of separatist movement in Catalonia was because of the nasty behaviour against Catalonia by the right-winged Popular Party, in power at that time, which again and again did everything to undermine Catalan institutions, culture and economics. One of the main problems being the clear intention by the Madrid government to suppress the Catalan language from schools in Catalonia, and even changing the official name of it in the Catalan-speaking area of Aragon from the original and accepted name "CatalĂ de La Franja" (Aragon's' Strip Catalan) to "Lengua Aragonesa Propia del Ărea Oriental" (LAPAO), which is simply a ridiculous attempt to terminate the Catalan language in that region by simply changing its name in official records. Sooo democratic!.

Why is the audio on this running at 1.5x speed? Not the first recent video with this problem either
Scotland ain't going anywhere any time soon. The SNP are in complete chaos with there leader just resigning after only a year in office. Along with this there's a very good chance Labour take the most seats (in Scotland) in the upcoming general election. If that does happen then the SNP would lose there own de facto referendum.
So silly that he uploaded this video TODAY, when Scotland fell further away from independence than they've been in decades. I think there are multiple US states more interested in independence than Scotland atm.
The idea labour get a majority in Scotland is fanciful.
Though I am certain SNP will lose quite a few
Totally correct. The Scottish segment is nonsense,
@@european-one Neither have a majority of votes, but the first past the post system unrealistically boosted SNP representation once their support reached a certain level, and will punish them similarly on the way down (which is where they are headed). It's far from unlikely Labour will win a majority of seats.
@@european-one Recent polls have Labour about 3% behind in the constituency vote (and quickly catching up), while the two are head to head in the regional vote. I don't think the idea of a Labour majority is "fanciful".

Noticed something interesting,. 28:23, there's a Scottish flag next to the flag of the People's Republic of Donetsk. Also, judging by the road sign, the photo was made in Donetsk or somewhere in the vicinity. That said, either it's a crossover between PRD and Scotland that I never knew existed, or the people who put up the flag have got the colouring wrong, because there's Andreevsky Flag - a flag used in Russian fleet - that looks exactly like that, but the colours on the latter are inverted - the cross is blue, and the rest is white.
It's the first. It's the DNR demonstration in support of Scottish independence in 2014.
It was a one-time event that brought in a total attendance of around 50 people.

It always amazes me when people boycott a vote. Unless there is a required quorum it is essentially a guarantee of your own defeat.
Their boycott meant nothing. The numbers still doesn't make it likely they would have had enough votes to vote independence.
The goal is to ensure that the vote looks as unreliable as possible so a possible referendum can held again at a later stage. Or in a different case to imply that the issue is irrelevant. Variety of goals depending on the situation

I like that you said âSouth Sudan is the newest independent country and member of United Nation at least for nowâ because the Nuer people are now seeking to declare Rol Naath or NuerLand/Nuer Nation in English as sovereign nation-state.
South Sudan is likely to break up into three countries, Rol Naath which is Nuer nation, Equatoria Region and Bhar-El Ghazal which is the Dinka land.

There's a lot of other factors concerning potential Greenlandic independence. Firstly, basically every Greenlandic party is pro-independence, with only one or two being openly pro-Union, and these are very small. Independence is the populist route for gaining political traction in Greenland. Furthermore, the Greenlandic government has taken on far more responsibilities than they can manage at once. Their education system is in shambles, and they've had to gradually lower the requirements of entry into their Teacher's education, as the newly-educated don't even live up to the requirements due to a dysfunctional education system.
There are also a lot of hidden services, that Denmark provide for Greenland. There is the police, defence, advanced healthcare (they are flown to the Rigshospital in Copenhagen for advanced problems) and access to universities. Furthermore, Greenlandic students don't have to live up to the grade requirements for university level educations in Denmark.
The Greenlandic population is too small and the infrastructure is too weak to support an independent Greenland. They may declare independence from Denmark (even though the royal family is even more popular up there), but they will never be truly independent. They are too strategically valuable. The only reason, that it is not owned by the USA, is because Denmark and the US have been, and are, historical, and current, allies. The Americans would never allow Russia or China to get a foothold up there.
It is a beautiful country, and it is so interconnected to Denmark, that I hope it will stay as a part of our Realm.
and all those extra services that Denmark does provide Greenland, they would start to ask money for in order to continue to provide it if Greenland does become independent. So they aren't just going to lose 50% of their annual budget, but atleast 60-70% if they wish thsoe services to continue.
Except for maybe Fishing and the fact that it's important to Nato, Denmark doesn't really gain anything from Greenland. They are basically just a massive moneysink.
@@splinte111 Exactly, but moneysink is a rough term to use. They are Danish citizens and we have to provide for them. Again, it is notable that 10% of the population is ethnically Danish, with even more being of mixed heritage. The percentage of Greenlanders in Greenland is becoming less and less, as many Greenlanders, who move to Denmark for an education decide to stay.
Greenland also has a good amount of natrual resources that could be mined but they refuse despite The fact that it could benifit Their economy and Denmarks/EUs too.
yea this is correct. The reason for the increased push for autonomy is so as soon as exploiting natural resources becomes viable, they can jump ship and get all the benefits for themselves.
denmark is basically paying reparations.
@@riddernoah dude major companies did studies and fund its not viable yet.
What about Balochistan, baloch people fighting against Iran and Pakistan more then 70 years to get their independence.
If they are doing it for 70years already why do you think they will succeed in the near future?
Baloch people are going nowhere they have no grudge against the people of pakistan they only demand justice for the inhumane persecution by pakistani army against their ethnicity. Pakistan army is the elephant in the room creating unrest and terrorism in pakistan for the appeasement of Western democratic powers and they are paid in heavy dollars in other words they are a mercenary army of the west.
Baluchistan zanda badđčđŻ
Balochistan can never cecede from either pakistan or iran.
Balochistan independence movement is pathetically insignificant. Nothing more than small pockets of terrorists in two countries, ruining the lives of normal people.
Well the part on New Caledonia is aging interestingly...
The collapse of the Soviet empire didn't lead to the "birth" of new states, they'd already been states before Muscovy violently subjugated them, and Russia being weak in the 90s simply allowed them to demand their independence back. That is not to mention all the nations that were denied the right to determine their faith by Moscow during that time.
And both Ukraine and Belarus were already UN members while still part of the USSR.
