    This is the Milton Bradley Grandmaster (MB Grandmaster) chess robot: a chess computer from the early 1980s with 12 levels of play, piece sensing board, and a robotic arm inside that moves them. It does not have the strongest chess engine but has hint, replay, auto setup and auto play functions.

    Fuck! My father had one EXACTLY like this!!!!
    It was not very hard to beat for someone who really knew how to play chess, but c'mon! That was fucking awesome!
    He gave it to someone and died a few years later, and when I tell my friends that he had a chessboard that played against him IN THE FUCKING 80'S (!) no one believes me.
    I've looked in lots of places and never found it. Thanks that gave me some sweet good old memories

    What an amazing technology from 1980 even nowadays that device still jaw dropping.
    But I am curious how if the player did illegal move and how the device would reacts, and how if the player put pieces in wrong place could it recognize and rearrange the sets?

    • @Gadgetify
      @Gadgetify  Před 3 lety +1

      It makes a beep and doesn't let you make illegal moves. I do know that if you put a piece on the right square but maybe not properly, the board centers it. You have to push the board to register, so if you put the piece on the wrong square and don't register the move, you can't continue.

    • @kylezo
      @kylezo Před rokem +1

      you have to sort of manually rearrange things if you mess up the position because the game will move the pieces around but you have to verify it's the right piece by making the game tell you what it's supposed to be. Don't think the game can quite reach out and slap your hand to prevent you from cheating, obviously, lol, but you can at least go backwards and the game will reset to the previous position (as long as you put the matching pieces on the right squares). It's slow af and clunky but it's so damn cool and it does an impressive amount of shit

      @Gadgetify  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Mirage robots are known for breaking apart easily. Look, I am a collector. I paid $400 for a Novag 2robot that didn't even work. However, if you want something that will last you a while, go with a Milton Bradley or Fidelity 6100. Here is a comparison: czcams.com/video/bGI3pPIXid8/video.html

      @@JERRYR708 I just gave my honest opinion. It's been too much trouble with this board for me. I have 3 Excalibur Mirages. I bought mine for about $100 each. One never worked. The other works for 3 minutes, then starts moving the pieces all over the place regardless of the game. The third one I fixed myself. It works OK. OK for a video or two. Then starts losing track of the pieces, so I have to open it, fix the magnet inside again, reset and do it again.
      This is the same reason I didn't buy Square Off Swap and Neo. Those also seem to be having these issues. Fidelity 6100, Excalibur Grandmaster, Phantom Chesster, these are robots I own that never ever have failed me.

    • @JERRYR708
      @JERRYR708 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @Gadgetify Yeah, 150.00 is a lot of money for an old novelty item with a lot of mechanical parts doomed for failure even upon arrival. I did manage to buy the Chessnut Air on holiday sale for 169.00 out the door. I hope I made the right decision.

      @@JERRYR708 you can't go wrong with Chessnut Air or DGT Centaur. They are solid boards. The Air+ is apparently coming soon, so that's a bit bigger but same technology.
