  • England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted England are 'falling short' after they failed to win against Denmark at Euro 2024.
Despite an early goal from Harry Kane, Denmark soon managed to equalise.
It means England are not yet through to the Euro 2024 knockout stages.
In this video, I'll rank every England player's performance against Denmark.

I'm wondering if Kane was working smart not hard yesterday. We're already through on a draw, he's had a long season, he's got to watch his stamina, he may be nursing something that he knows will be healed soon if he takes it easy. Just wait until we get to the Ro16 or the finals and you'll see him come alive again.

TAA is not a midfield player, he is not a press resistant player, he can make a lot of simple passes, which may or may not be under pressure, and he genuinely seems lost playing centrally. You can't keep a player for his "swashbuckling balls" into runners. England don't have a Salah or a Diaz running into the channels. Neither Saka or even Gordon can't do that. It is better he plays RB, and Walker adjusts to LB. But TAA in midfield shows no energy or vigor. Gallagher was objectively way better

@nananou1687 never said he was, but to say the team improved with the introduction of Gallagher is incorrect. Which says that the system and instructions are what's not working. You could play trent in midfield with a quick front 3 that makes runs in behind the defence, but that never happened. I think it happensled once or twice for saka. Personally, I'd think about trent at lb as trippier isn't doing much at the moment or Walker lb and trent rb.

England haven't struggled like this in the previous 3 tournaments, they used have a fast start, sometimes score a goal sit back for 10
or 15 minures and then come out again when the wanted too, rinse and repeat perfect game management. Its quite simple why
England are not playing well at the moment, the players who have previously done well in the forward position are not in the squad.
You might laugh, but sterling statically is England best forward at club level and at International level, the guy was so important
for England in 2018, and in the euro's he was Englands best player by a mile. For cover on the left England also had Rashford
all most a like for like replacement for sterling or a starter. Grealish was also available for cover on the left as well, a player who
could offer something different and was very effective. On the right depending on who played on the left, perhaps Rashford
or Grealish, Sterling could also be used for cover for Saka. England have gone from having 4 top class forwards, strength in
depth to only having Saka on the right, who is the only player who can get in behind teams now. Over these last 2 games
Saka and Walker have been Englands best creative players by a mile. I really dont get why everybody is so obsessed with
Trent and Foden, they were not the players who have brought England the progressive gradual success in the past, it was
Englands forwards on both flanks, creating, scoring goals and liking up with kane. In opinion trying to fix the left hand side
forward position is more important thing. Southgate could use Gordon, Watkins, or Toney on the left in a front 3 with kane

these last 2 games, that only Saka and Walker, have actually had success in creating chances down the right. other than that
nobody is stepping up and doing that at the moment. In the 2022 world cup Kane, was the highest assister with 3, Foden had
2, and Maguire, Bellingham and Shaw had 1 each. The highest goal scorers were, Saka with 3, Rashford with 2, Kane with 2
and Hendo and Sterling and Grealish with one each. The forward players who I have mentioned in my previous comment

I'm also bored of the Trent experiment, and the people blaming him for it not working. He absolutely could do a job there, and England do not have "experts" on the bench ready to replace him. Wharton and Mainoo are very good, but not experts. The problem with playing Trent there is that if is allowed to turn, he needs runners. But when he looks up he see's that Foden has drifted from the left and is normally sniffing Bellingham's arse, Kane is normally playing as a false 6 and having a chat with Pickford, completely irrelevant to any attacking move unless the ball has been passed around the opposition box for 10 minutes.
5 Mins before taking him off, Trent moved over to the left side that Rice normally operates, and when he turned, Saka instantly makes a run and Trent find him, he messes up the first touch but nearly lobs the keeper with the header. Then Southgate takes him off, and 10 minutes later brings on Watkins and Bowen... the players WHO WILL RUN IN BEHIND. Fair enough to say it's not working with Trent, but the experiment was rigged from the start because he's got no one to fucking pass to. They do not need two pivots. Play Trent and Bellingham as wide 8's infront of Rice, and allow Foden to drift inside when he wants and let Bellingham make the runs in behind. Or start the game with his beloved "energy" players like Gallagher, and then bring Trent on with the players who will run in behind like Gordon.
The manager is a bomb-scare on football, but the talk about T.A.A is equally as daft.

england is lost whether trent plays or not. the idea that its him costing england is insane. how exactly did they improve after he got subbed. they still sat back and let denmark pressure them. southgate will forever be the thing costing england the most. he’ll continue to play trent cause he sees how valuable the creation is, but he’ll continue with him in midfield cause he’s too afraid to allow his fullbacks to bomb up the pitch consistently. england will continue to look timid and unsure as long as their manager is; trents actually done a decent job in midfield, but the risky nature of his passes is amplified in this structure where england dont attack as often as they should.

@@err4071 Trent has created the most chances for England so far at the Euro's, and he has yet to play a full 90.
Bellingham is England's best player, and you want to move him deeper into a double pivot with Rice so that Palmer, a player who mostly contributes through penalties, to take the 10 from Bellingham?
Or you want Rice as the 6 and to play either Foden or Palmer as 8's, then creating the same problem everyone is moaning at Trent for by playing players out of position? Because neither Palmer or Foden play as 8's at club level, and we've seen Foden play 8 for England and he's stunk the place out. The reason people wanted Trent in the team is because he creates chances, something that England suffer from chronically, he is finally played there but has zero options because Southgate is playing 3 players who all want to occupy the same area and want the ball to feet.
It's crazy how he subbed him off, brings Gallagher on, and 10 mins later brings on Watkins on who instantly started making runs in behind.

Bud I respect your loyalty for trent, but in my opinion and everybody elses, the guys been trash. As far as England are
concerned, people tend to get carried away with the players we have, and they overate their abilites to come together
and play as a team. Sure we have some good players, but as a team England are not Real Madrid, they're not liverpool
they're not Man city, they're not Spain, England are England and as team, England haven't got the quality in midfield
to let our best player and worker to have a free role upfield in a number ten role, Bellingham has got so many attributes
as a 8, he can do a little bit of everything, and in that position he's world class. Why try and put a round peg in a square
hole, when we have a player who's won the bundesliga player of the year in that position. They only reason to put
Foden or Palmer in a flat 3 as a 10, is because they don't have the physicality, the work rate and the defensive qualites
to play as a 8. At Real madrid they have Tchouaméni and Camavinga, 2 top class central midfield players, so Ancelotti
can afford to play Bellingham further forward, England haven't got 2 players with that quality so England can't.
At liverpool they have the quality to allow trent to do what he wants, and they can also afford to cover up for his
defensive mistakes, England cant etc etc.

@@err4071 It isn't loyalty tho is it, my suggestion was to take Trent out of the team because there is no point playing him there if you are going to sterilize his best attribute by having three 10's on the pitch. But to suggest Trent is/has been trash when he has still created the most chances despite not completing a full 90 is ridiculous.
Also, this England team has far more quality than Liverpool have. They've had a constantly rotating midfield and defence bar Van Dijk who stayed fit. And again with the myth that Trent is weak defensively despite Klopp saying time and time again that he is instructed to go forward knowing it can result in balls in behind over him, it was happening all season long to them on the other side to Robertson and Tsimikas.
England have John Stones, one of the best defenders the league has seen, Walker with the recovery pace, and Guehi is probably England's best player so far in the tournament. There are countless compilations on social media that show every touch from Trent before he was hooked off, and bar that one bad touch, most of the time he lost possession was due to poor passes from Rice or Pickford making every first touch for him a 50/50 with a Denmark player.

Southgate could use Gordon, Watkins, or Toney on the left in a front 3 with kane
and Sake, and have a 3 man midfield of Rice, Bellingham, and Foden or Palmer.

Played all recent games 4-3-3, started against Serbia 4-3-3 and they looked bright. As soon as they switched to 4-2-3-1 (and have stayed that way since) they’ve been absolute rubbish.
Why did Southgate even bother with warm up games if he wasn’t going to bother with practicing that system?
Why play Trent as a double pivot and CDM when he’s never done that before? It’s not fair on him as a player. The times he’s been able to roam into the 8, he’s created chances. Now he’s getting slammed for not being able to hack it in midfield.
He’d be fine in midfield, as an 8. Not as a CDM. It’s highlighting his weaknesses and not allowing him to do anything he’s there to do not to mention messing with Rice cause he has to account for someone who has never in his life played that role until 20 minutes into a game less than a week ago.
Southgate picked the wrong players in the squad if he wanted to play that system. Only Wharton can do it effectively but is it fair to place the entire tournament on a kid who hasn’t even started a game for England and has about 20 games at top level?
A competent manager would shift the system to suit the players he has, not play a system yearning for a player who was last good at the 2018 World Cup. That’s unfair on all of them.
His tactics are woeful. He needs to be gone.

Living in Denmark as an Englishman, I've witnessed firsthand the lingering resentment the Danes harbor towards us since the Euro 2020 semifinals. They genuinely believed it was "coming home" for them until Raheem Sterling shattered their hopes.
In the buildup to the 2020 final, buying an England shirt in Copenhagen was impossible. The biggest sports shops had their staff clad in Italian shirts, a clear indication of their animosity towards us. This silent, unspoken hatred has persisted despite their polite denials.
On match day, Danmark v England 2024, Danish streets were a sea of Danish shirts from dawn. People who usually had no interest in football suddenly became ardent supporters, driven by a sense of national unity. It's common here for Danes to support sports they're typically uninterested in, just to be part of the collective national pride. These folks have a foot still planted in the 19th-century mentality, clinging to nationalistic fervor.
Like many English people, I just don't care about sports like golf or cricket, no matter how well England performs. But, this is not the case for your average Dane.
Despite putting out a very average Danish team led by the aging Christian Eriksen, the Danes were far more motivated than anyone in England could imagine. Denmark might be a small country, but it sees itself as a big nation, and this match was a chance to prove it, if only to themselves. Since the match, Denmark has been basking in a sense of triumph, happier than a Cheshire cat with a saucer of cream, all for a draw. Danish TV has ridiculed England's aspirations vindictively, not playfully.
It was their UEFA triumph to cause disruption and ridicule on England's progress and to make England feel how they felt during EURO 2020. It's a perverse pleasure for a perverse little nation that has become very quiet since they found out England has already qualified and now has the power to affect Danish progress ...if we lose our final match.
I stand by Southgate. If he hadn't been so cautious against such a motivated Denmark, we might have ended up with no points at all. The group stage is where we need to be cautious and strategic, not take unnecessary risks. The points we've gained so far suggest that Southgate's strategy is working, and we are currently qualified.
To underscore the point, Denmark faces Serbia today in a crucial qualification game. Yet, I've been out and have seen hardly any Danish shirts around, although my wife mentioned spotting a couple in Copenhagen.
Finally, I hope we do use the game to manage our resources and if we lose and take the third-place qualification spot I would not be sad. It would be best if we go into the next match as underdogs, alleviating the overwhelming pressure and criticism our lads face while trying to navigate the psychological minefield of tournament football.
