  • We join the original MonStar, Curt, in the garage today as he shows us how to convert from a original factory transmission, a TH400 in this case, to a Monster 700R4.
Now why would you want to go through this process? Not only is the 700R4 a more durable model, designed for heavy duty usage, but it also provides better gas mileage from the stronger overdrive, and a lower gear ratio by a factor of 20% than what can be found on most transmissions,
Curt goes over how to remove the original transmission from the vehicle, from the driveshaft and the torque converter to the unit itself.
From there, he uses one of Monster’s most popular products, the Master Conversion Package, to install the newly remanufactured transmission into the vehicle.
Items included in this kit include the actual 700R4 transmission, a performance torque converter, all the cables, bolts, and gears that are needed, a universal dust cover, and much much more.
Everything you need to know about upgrading your transmission can be seen in this step by step process with Curt. The process can be done by just about anyone with the right tools, making this less of a chore.

For anyone installing the torque converter, the converter must have at least 1qt of ATF inside as indicated, but turning and pushing to fully seat can be checked very easy. If you place a straight edge or even a length of 2 X 4 that straight, you will be able to slide your thumb or index finger between the two. If not fully seated, the torque converter will crack the front pump gear.
This will ruin your day! A simple quick check will avoid this sad issue when you are in a hurry, cold or laying on your back.
    Just a tip.

It's always a good idea to call around and find a respectable shop you know and trust. You could try finding a vetted installer by using gearnation.com/. Sometimes they have 2 options for the Adapter 1.) Output shaft Adapter Kit in the Transmission or 2.) Transfer Case adapter. They can be contacted at www.AdvancedAdapter.com or 800-350-2223 and please let us know if we can help you with the Transmission build we work direct with Advanced Adapters building those kits in for many years, you would just have it ship direct to us and we can make it apart of the build process. • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  Před 3 lety +2

*The 700r4 will be controlled by a TV cable (Throttle Valve Cable) to adjust the shift points and it will have better fuel economy being a 4 speed Transmission with Lock up with a Low first gear Ratio. These can be built up to 1000HP with our SS Xtreme Models.
*The TH400 will be controlled by the Modulator there is no cable you will need to produce vacuum to operate this Transmission and this is a 3 speed so you will not get the best fuel economy. The TH400 is one of the strongest and most reliable Transmissions available we have built to hold upwards of 1200HP+ they are bulletproof.
*The TH350 will be controlled by the Modulator as well and you will need to produce vacuum like the TH400 but on the TH350 you will have a Detent Cable this is a 3 speed as well so fuel economy is not great. The TH350 is the weakest of the 3 Transmissions we are talking about and can be built up to 600HP.

Keeping the TH400 is great if you are keeping the car original but upgrading to the 700R4 allows the car to drive at a much more comfortable rpm on highways and gives better gas mileage. Give your classic more drivability with the overdrive by doing this conversion.

when I first saw this I'm thinking that I would never change the TH400 to a 700R4... especially going in behind a Big Block.... absolutely go to a 4L80.. its a TH400 with overdrive.. much stronger trans than the 700R4.... good video though....

The 4L80e would require a computer to run the transmission, and may be too big for the vehicle the TH400 is being replaced in. The 700r4 gives it the overdrive the owner is looking for but maintaining mechanical control with the TV cable.

All depends on what your application is, that overdrive does wonders on the highway

I completely agree i have a 89 Silverado C1500 2wd with a 700R4 it slips in and out of overdrive and the gas mileage is slightly better than a th350 or th400 which i don’t really care about rather have one of those than the 700 and in a couple months the 700 is getting pulled for a th400

This may be caused by a bad governor or you may need to readjust the TV cable. You can watch Curt as he shows step by step procedure here: czcams.com/video/yOS7YN05X7E/video.html

A well built 700R4 runs circles around a 400 and if it is slips in and out of overdrive something is not set up right. If TV cable and lockup converter are set up right it is a great transmission.
