Sony released its online network service in North America in 2002, until its last days in early 2016.
In this video we look at the origins Sony's networking service and how you can still play Playstation 2 games online in 2018 such as the awesome SOCOM 2 using tunneling software known as XLink Kai .
I also walk through how its possible to bypass now defunct Sony's authentication method known as DNAS to play other games online.
Finally, the Playstation 2 has web browsing capabilities too, I show you whats possible.

You can use a glitch to dislocate the nuke's landing in "Modern CZcams Warfare" where it'd land on a coordinate which would somehow cause the general to have the lowest reputation possible in game since this can be used to skip cutscenes due to the general being too slow with certain events that are result of such reputation, and it's told this can save up to 3 hours on any% speedrun! It's told that the developers used this to speed up the game to get to certain sections quicker.

@Hayden Holman i think Call of Duty online is to blame. I wouldn't know though i started playing online games on PSP and it was a fun experience
Same.. my first game i play when finally i got internet in my home was black opw 2
You wouldn't really need it...games were so enjoyable back then...interne wasnt so nessecery
Man, I grew up with the PS2 without internet. Starting to regret it now!
winlover37 Same here, sort of. I only got my PS2 in 2010 because we were too poor to afford a more modern system and it was located in the living room, while the broadband was in the dining room with a plastered over door blocking the only clear route through. Don't think my parents would drape a wire through the kitchen just so I could hope there were still people playing the games I owned online.
I grew up and never had an xbox or ps2 back in the days so i never got to play online until the wii.
Same her. All we missed.
I was young at the time and never knew that sadly

How could we possibly know if God exists without revealation from the supposed God? Or, are we looking at this totally wrong? @Hayden Holman yep, only now could we afford these games when we're at the point in life where they've somehow lost their magic... i was just playing the witcher 3 on the ps4 a while ago and i somehow remember radiata stories 12 years ago, and remember i was having so much more fun with that game than any of the other AAA titles nowadays
Just got a ps2 today. It's awesome to replay a couple of games that I grew up on
I'm going to be fixing mine and using it for homebrew and walkthroughs
Yep
Seriously someone still plays ps2 Online? Thats actaully amazing lol

@InsaneLP Damn I didn't know superslims were hackable yet. Some dirtbag stole my games and I really wanted to play some Demon's souls the other day.
@InsaneLP
That's fking sick. i've been away from consoles for a while, last thing if modded was a a WII last year to play the like 10 good games designed for it and to use as an emulation device for oldies. I might look for a Fat PS3 for the Emotion Engine chip alone.
Because of you and your work, I recently bought a PS2 and now I can't stop playing online! Thank you so much!

I never played online on PS2 growing up. I always took my console over to my friends house or just my Memory Cards and we'd compare the progress in each others games or customized cars when it came to NFS.
Sounds like it was a good time for both I would always play nfs when I went to my friends house than we'd both take cracks at sephiroth in kingdom hearts never beay him unfortunately. But I still have the ancient memory card with that file on it. Loved the shadow hearts series as well as the star ocean games. With Radiata Stories to top it off! Ahhh nostalgia......

Brilliant video. This is what retro-gaming is all about. It's not about collecting; it's about playing.
Mike Hill PS2 is retrogaming?
@@ikagura of course. the ps2 is old enough to buy alcohol.
Collecting has kinda killed retrogaming (not entirely)
I mean some games are rare but overpricing is bad for the economy
Yeah the PS2 was already retrogaming since the PS4 release.

I really wish people would jump on Socom 2 for a weekend. Get up to like 10k again would be nice, just for a weekend.
The more people make vids on it the bigger chances this can happen but for longer than a week!
Great video I often wondered about this subject as I love my PS2 and don't think I could ever sell mine. Thanks for posting
Geeeez, my bro and I had hundreds and hundreds of hours on socom 2. Pretty much introduced clan gaming and the use of clan tags. Such a great game.
Glad the PS2 still alive!
Killer vid mate.
Just a note as far as DNAS goes: It is possible to get through the DNAS check using cheats. I wrote a DNAS bypass cheat for Everquest Online Adventures: Frontiers that works on PCSX2 and on my modded console to connect to a private test server. I believe there are a few other games with DNAS bypass cheats as well.

I got the Playstation 3 in 2007 but I still loved playing PS2 at that time. In 2008 I discovered for the first time in my life that I was able to play online on PS2!
I was very happy when I knew Champions, one of my favorite games had an online feature and I was able to play a little because there are not enough players.
Man, I remember playing Socom up until 2009 or so. We had about 25 people at any time still playing then. There were also cheaters too...
To this day, one of my favorite games, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, still has online servers on PS2.
Edit: Nice to see so much Big Red One footage.
Talk about a blast from the past still remember reading about people using xlink with Armored core in US due lan, but not online like game had in Japan.
SOCOM II is still alive!? what have I been doing with my life :'(

@Mike Santiago still play 1 and 2 to this day
You can also use a PS2 Backwards compatible PS3 to play online!.. (at least on a PS3 DECHA debug kit that i'm aware of).
sweet
blondbassist ,
Sure can. So if your PS3's Wi-Fi is good enough, you're going wireless with your PS2 gaming while getting increased equipment utilization. If you're concerned about heat, wear and tear on that PS3 though, I believe OPL, with appropriate settings, running from a PS2 that's using a USB Bluetooth dongle will let you use your PS3's wireless DualShock3 instead of what is likely a worn out (and wired) DualShock2. Saves on the controller clutter too.
I can even play those PS2 games with a CECHL PS3 (Non-BC).
Just watch the temperature, because somehow the fan would be quieter when playing PS2 games (and the temperature went high af).
blondbassist I never knew this would work!
I used to play Tony hawk's american wasteland/ Underground 2 back in 2008 like this

I don't think a console is dead so long as people are still playing it, which is theoretically forever (largely through emulation)
I literally have 5 fatboy models with dozens of hard drives i use for hd loader and hd advance and 1 slim still sealed. Play them all the time and still buy games on Ebay. No emulation
In my place they still have PS2 Slim.ver on their store, don't know why but its still in good shape with the box... Except no Game left for PS2 now

I remember trying out CoD3 and BF2 online a few years ago out of curiosity. I was surprised that a handful of people still played them. I didn't realize Sony left the DNAS running up until 2016, but then again we are talking about Japan here, which still had FDS kiosks in the early 2000s.

Had so much fun on these back in the day.
Whew! The Online desert level on Socom II. That brings me back; as well as players collapsing to the ground whenever a grenade explodes nearby.
which PS2 model is this? The CD lid seems strange. Is it custom?
MusicDiscoveryNet | MDN yes it is
Originaly its Slim.ver looks like, but where did that CD Lid came from?... From another CD Player? Or...
andreas masal yea ive never seen a slim ps2 like that one before either.
That's a flip-top lid for the PS2. It's a 3rd party accessory that has to be installed onto the system in place of the normal lid. It's used to bypass the 3 sensors on the slim PS2 so that you can open the lid and swap out games without the system knowing that the disc tray/lid is open. Using it in conjunction with Swap Magic, you can play import games, as well as burned copies of games, on the PS2 without the system rejecting it as something other than a PS2 game, bypassing any region lock or copy protection.
andreas masal you can find them on Ali express. Or sometimes eBay
I finally was able to get online after the slimline came out and I was giddy with joy. my multiple attempts to play smackdown vs. raw 2007 online only resulted in frustrating ass beatings by topless CAWs

Mortal Kombat Deception And Armageddon are still online. I run the Mortal Kombat Klassics Discord group and we are currently at 112 members.
Bevan Piercy ,
Which DNS(s) is your group typically using? Are those your group's "last fight results" listed at xCristiahnX's server log?
Because Bobz hasn't worked for the longest time we've all had to use xCristiahnX's server.
Bevan Piercy ,
Thought I had seen server entries at Bobz' recently so I was curious. I'm assuming a lot of these fight results ps2online.tk/mkarmps2/lastfights.php are from those in your group then. I'm contemplating setting up a proper arcade joysticks and buttons setup for that experience on a podium in front of a wall-mounted screen and speakers somewhere down the line, room permitting. Any tips at mitigating input and video lag?
Yeah we've tried Bobz recently and had no luck getting through, but we all keep testing. I've told the group to have both Bobz and Christian's DNS on their PS2s as 2 different settings so we can easily switch between them. As for the log on Christian's DNS, looks like other people not in the group. A lot of people play the game from other countries, and I know Armageddon is very popular with one group on Facebook (Not English). As for input lag, there isn't a lot you can do as I'm running my PS2 on a CRT using RGB Scart. It should be lag free, but the nature of Deception and Armageddon online is input lag. But if you're interested let me know and I'll send you an invite to our Discord group. I've got quite a bit to clean up, streamline the guides and start getting more people online. I need to also get a PCSX2 guide up. I'm trying to do the best that I can to give everyone every option available. But it's recommended that people use a fat PS2 and a hard drive for the fastest load times and it keeps everything synced up properly. In the works I'm also looking to get Unchained and MK9 added to our list of games so we can hopefully get more members. I've been running this group for 2 years and it's been very hard to get the people I did.
I surely would love playing ps2 online again how the years goes by I currently own 2 ps2 fat versions along with ps2 slim 3 versions of ps3 one ps1 console and a old model ps4. Hopefully by black Friday I'll get the spiderman 1tb ps4 slim bundle soon.

It's only the custom door for the discs, nothing else
Looks nice
@RS1 I'm guessing because he wanted to give it a PS1 look and/or the original lid broke.
@RS1 he explains its for the swap magic in other vids
@RS1 its a method of playing games on a ps2 that are not original discs you woud SWAP the disc after the water mark was read on the disc (the ps2 spash screen) this was a ok method if you were fast and had the correct mods for your ps2 good for game disc backups and homebrew but fmcb+ netowrk/hdd loading is the way to go now as its more stable and not dependent on your swap speed and timing
Best youtuber
love this video man keep it up!
I still play Resident Evil Outbreak 1 and 2 online, too bad you didn't try it out for this vid, it's still quite active!
Another great video MVG!
The DNS you were using had rules set up to redirect DNAS requests to a replacement server + Gamespy requests to Openspy (open source gamespy emulator), however for a period of time until yesterday the Gamespy redirects were configured incorrectly due to IP address changes on Openspy's end. Openspy are about to host their own DNS server with PS2 game support in mind.
For XLink configuration, it's worth noting you either need a DHCP config, or a static IP config generated from teamxlink.co.uk/ps2assign with netmask 255.255.0.0
There's a second way to bypass DNAS for users with modded consoles, ISO patches with PS2 patch engine. Some of these can be found on the PS2 Online Gaming website, though this is really only worthwhile for Call of Duty 3, the only game that still has official servers running.
There are also a few games that have replacement servers available that don't require DNAS bypass such as Twisted Metal Black: Online, and Tribes: Aerial Assault.
Thanks for the information! I'll be sure to remember that. This video was really useful as well, can't wait to get back into the game now!
great info. thanks man
