- Yes a $99 chainsaw cuts but for long term or big use PROBABLY A BIG NO!!! You might want to get a better saw that will last longer cut faster and not make you go deaf and your hands go numb.
Glad to see this aspect of the firewood business. I bought a 62cc, 18" saw for cheap off Amazon two years back and it runs just great for seasonal wood prep. An 18" bar on a 62cc saw is awesome.
Dead right...I have an aftermarket 18" bar on my Stihl MS362C, and it cuts like a hot damn...👍

Better then any battery saw. I had ton of limb wood few years ago. Bought cheap top handle chainsaw. Didn’t think use much. I use all the time. When quiets I definitely be buying a better band one. Keep up the good work.

It will last long time if you take care of it and use it reasonably. Also it's good saw for beginners because then they get picture what is good and what isn't. At YT is see mostly guys who cut only some cords of firewood and they desperately need biggest saw that can be bought. In reality those mostly don't need bigger saw than consumer grade 50cc chainsaw. Great video!

I see potential. I have a DeWalt 60 V with a 12 inch bar. It works great until the batteries die. I use this saw for limbing.
I always have fuel mix on hand for the larger saws.
This is why I like show and tell. Now I know it works. Great for the home gardener, too.

For years when I was cutting 1-2 cords a year for fireplace wood, I used a 42cc Poulan 16 inch saw and got by just fine. It finally gave up the ghost after 20 years but it was a great little saw.

You can't get much for $100 these days so having that toy is a good deal and nice for teaching the kids how to cut.

Back in the 70s I had a bad run with three. German saws I was running and out of pure frustration I went to the local farm shop and bought a $290 Poulan 3300. 20 inch bar. Everyone laughed at my choice but it did the job and did it well. Cutting out very long windbreak rows of causarina. Good burning hadwood. Thirty yrs and four bars later I gave it to my son in law and he's still using it every year doing five cord.I've got three or four orange saws ,now big to little but that Poulan helped set up my firewood buisness. Chris for a number of years I cut with a 42 cc saw my big saw was 51cc , I cut a lot of wood that way. My goal was to clean up the woods, not only down limbs but dead trees. I used a garden tractor and trailer so I could protect the young trees. It’s a lot of work but fun especially when you can drive past deer 🦌 and they just look at you. Keep on cutting

wish I had that as the first saw, my Dad asked if I wanted to cut wood and then handed me a float carbureted, gear driven Lombard. One of those saws you didn't go to the woods, you brought the wood to it because of the weight.

Now you’re cooking with gas Chris. Little B&D cost less than a replacement battery for the electric ones. Yes the safety gear cost at least 5 times as much as the saw. Maybe B&D needs to make/sell safety gear for $200 and give you a free saw! GNI

I love cheap chainsaws! I bought a Wemars off amazon for 150. Thing has cut 30 to 50 cords of wood already for me. And still going strong.
I hate cheap chain saws. They cut slow and are way less productive. More wood is the goal and they miss it all the time.
My experience with cheap saws are they always need tuning after the first tank of gas.
They often weigh a bit more than a similar name brand saw.
They can be less forgiving with starting.
You will need to sharpen the chain regularly.
However for 20 or less hours per year of use providing you can follow the instructions they are adequate.

Nothing worse than a safety chain for when your bar is buried full length in a log and the tip won't cut. I'm sure it would cut a lot better with a real chain on it. But they put them on because of the beginners that are buying them.

Yup, I have some "tests" coming with it soon.
Just my 2 cents and what I did when I first got a saw; got a 16” Polan cheap, then I spent the extra funds to get my safety gear and not go cheap on that end. Learned the basics and built my skills with that saw. Next saw was a Stihl Wood Boss and then picked up,a used 357xp from a tree cutter. Never looked back. The next saw I got was a 460 Rancher with a 24” bar, same cc as the 357xp but I did not want to change my 357xp to a longer bar. Definitely a fan of the 24” bar and now thinking of a 562xp. I do not want to loose my 357xp and like many, you can’t ever seem to have to many saws. 🤣
From what you have said there I HIGHLY recommend a 70cc saw. A 462 Stihl or a 572Husqvarna or a 7310 Echo. When you get one you will be mad at yourself for not getting one sooner....wayyyyyyyyy faster cutting.
@@InTheWoodyard I totally agree with you Chris. I followed the advice of many tree cutters, grew my skill and confidence before I went up in CC’s. Ready for the 70cc class now. 24” bar is the happy place for me for everyday cutting but having a saw I can have a larger bar on for those certain occasions is always nice as well. 👍🏻

Biggest concern for the casual user with a saw like this in my mind is the fuel going stale sitting. I'd highly recommend to anyone to not bother mixing your own gas, and buy the premix. When I got my battery chainsaw I was going through so little fuel with my string trimmer it was running rough, not wanting to start etc. switched to premixed, and it has been back to normal.

A few years ago, I bought a joncutter 5800 from farmertec for $99 for the saw body. For another $25 I got a bat and several chains. That saw is a 58 cc clone and is an excellent saw. Was my primary firewood saw for a couple of years.
If you don't need the latest and greatest, then the clone saws like that from farmertec are an awesome value, including the Stihl and Husqvarna ones.
Yup, for a first timer or a home owner they cut good enough.
For my first saw I bought a craftsman 42cc 16” bar I had never used a chainsaw before so I didn’t want to screw up a expensive saw if I made a mistake and then when I felt more comfortable I upgraded to a 50cc, big difference in speed and serves all my needs.

What kind of oil do you mix in your gas’s for the saws. Can chains saws use boat outboard oil for mixing in chain saws?
I use the Husqvarna mix oil and yes you probably can use most other mix oils but the Husqvarna stuff is best from what I have heard.
50 years ago, my first saw was a 14" Poulan from Sears! I cut down a sycamore tree about 6' from our house . The stump measured over 36"!! Very stupid stunt! I must have cut over 100 cords with that saw. " We were young once..."
Yup, even small saws cut but time is more important than saving a few dollars to me.
Honestly it is better made then other cheap known brands. Fo some one learning saws this is not a bad unit. For a person needing a first chainsaw I would reccomend one of these. If I did not have way to many saws I would grab one. I really love these toy saws because theey are great for small trees and keeping in the truck for storm clean up. Step up the game on this by using a pro non safety Stihl chain and a few others. I want to see a bit of a tear down on this. this is the same saw as troybult and prorun lol

Those are made by MTD, and are a clone of a Zenoah from Japan. Pretty decent saws for the money. I have select parts for that saw.

Buy it for your first saw. Cut & sell 2 full cords and buy a good saw. As you pointed out the safety personal equipment needed costs more than the saw. 😂

Pretty sure I said this before but here goes. For the suburban casual user, think about a corded electric. No gas to store, and it’s quite a bit better for the environment. Also they are quite inexpensive, but maybe a little bit slower than the gas model you just showed. My first saw was a Canadian Tire Mastercraft, 40 years ago. It still works fine. Just wouldn’t reach into the forest at the cottage.
Yup, but I have found that with the battery saws when you need them the batteries need charging so you have to wait for them to charge unless the are always on constant vampire charge sucking power..
@@InTheWoodyard I agree with that. Which is why I said corded electric. For the average suburban home, a 100 foot extension cord should get you anywhere on the property. So that’s the way to go. Virtually no carbon footprint.( except for the fireplace of course) burning 30 year old carbon is different from burning millions of years old carbon, in my humble opinion.
I wanted a bigger saw for our place in Maine. I bought a 62cc Supmix for $105 . It came with a 20" bar and has an alleged 4.2hp. It is way more powerful than a 42cc Jonsered that we keep there. The manual says that it wants 25:1 mix ratio. It will be great this spring for keeping the black flies at bay! I have only run 5 tanks through it, so far I'm impressed. That said it is not the equal of the Echo CS620P that cuts most of our firewood for home (8-9 cords) heating. However, for about 1/6th the price, not a bad saw!

The professional Echo saws cannot be beat for value. A few months ago, I was cutting alongside a Stihl 362. While we weren't racing, the CS620P was just as fast as the Stihl. $600 vs $900; the $300 that I saved buys a lot of liquid pain relief at the end of a weekend of putting up firewood!!!
My 620p is easy to start, always. With the 24" bar, it makes bucking easier on my back, and it'll make short work of some good-sized logs. It will not keep up with one of your Husqvarna 572s, but I cut wood to heat our home and get some exercise. Maybe I'll cowboy up for an Echo CS7310P in a couple of years. Meanwhile, I ordered a top handle CS 355T. Next year, I'll get their CS501P to replace my Husqvarna 450e (Rancher?). The 450e is a decent power saw, but sucks to start when it's hot! Often, I run it nonstop for a tank of gas, set the brake & let it dance around the wood yard while rearranging logs...

Chris, did you put your Husky premix gas in it? That’s probably 50-1 while you mentioned that the 2cycle oil it came with was for 40-1. Btw, I did an internet search and confirmed it is 40-1.

I have a 38cc blackmax chainsaw with 16 in. Bar made by black and decker, i use it for small trees and all limbing work. Not a bad saw for what it does.

Looks exactly like my Remington RM4214 (Zenoah clone?!?). I bought it to ride in the Jeep/ATV so I don't have my Huskies and Stihls bouncing around. It's actually been a good saw. It's not used much, but always seem to fire up with only a few pulls. It doesn't happen often with powersaws, but sometimes your $100 can go a long way. Thanks for the video - looking forward to the future tests!

I'm running a 5800/6200 Zenoah clone saw under the Neo-Tec brand. Neo-Tec ships out their saws with a tool kit that's complete enough to take the engine apart to replace the cylinder and piston. Love the light weight of it. It just lacks power and "fuel range" compared to an OEM saw. Otherwise mine has held up nicely so far. Did a few small cuts to rest it, then buried the 20in bar into dead oak.

@InTheWoodyard don't think so. Is just a nice thing to send. They include piston ring compresors, torx wrench, piston stopper to do engine work, etc.
I get the logic of the easy-to-use startup saw but, ill argue my 0.01c opinion.
In the world of gray market saws.
Id rather have a copy of any saw in the 365/395 size range.
The aftermarket support of parts for all of the saws in that size range is staggering.
I personally got one that was the equivalent to a 365 out of the box. and swapped parts to make it as close to the limited edition 372xpw model with the 76cc's.
Over 4 years now ive absolutely beat it. And its still going. I put no effort in to keeping it out of rain or white stuff. Other then normal things breaking starter rop, kill swich, muffler gasket and 2 spark plugs, its still going.
The only downside is i carry a special 32/1 mix for it, versus the 45/1 for the oem's. And that is a bit annoying at times.

The exception is the 385/390 not as much available for that one in the aftermarket. And husqvarna is seriously looking at doing away with the oem version, now that theres a 585 model.

Will the chain dull up 30% faster? will it go through bar oil one third faster ?
Might you need to tear it down and clean it more frequently to insure optimal performance?

That gas can you have there is about the best we can buy out side of a real deal safety can . But for ever I used the round metal eagle brand gas cans till you could no longer buy the spouts . The problem I have with the plastic one like you have there in sun it really swells and over time it stresses it out
Yup, I try to keep it out of the sun at all times.
Looks like they're using a similar design as the Craftsman models you find at Lowes, etc. Not a fan of that air filter, as at least on the Craftsman, it lets in debris into the carb.
Black and Decker and Craftsman are the same company. Have been for a few years now

chris on that 540xp rear handle does ot run the same 16in low pro bar and chain as the the top handle version … i am am east coat climber … i can do ALMOST EVERYTHING in the tree with an 18in bar … before i habe to move to the 550 20in or the 562 up to 28 in … when they say low pro “.325 mini” im curious if i could throw on an 18in force bar and x cut chain … or whether i would have to change the sprocket to run an 18 in “big boy” chain (non safety/kick back) … my question is the .325 low pro sprocket different than the typical .325 … sometimes they call it mini … for example, still has their 3/8 mini pitch which is .370 and then their regular 3/8 pitch which is 375 … I’m curious if there’s a difference in the Husqvarna brackets as well
bad shoulders after years of climbing i know that new 540 top handle will pull an 18 in … just curious how easy it will be to convert to a big boy chain .. most it would take is changing the sprocket if need be … but will that work … if I had one in my hand, I could tell you myself … but i don’t so i was hoping you would know … I know an 18 inch bar sounds crazy on a top handle when you’ve been climbing as long as I have it makes sense I’ve seen guys run 20 and 24 inch bars on their 201’s and they rip … with a bit of port work … the mark 3 is 39cc no port work need to pull 18 … what I’m curious about is the conversion … can I throw an 18 inch on there with a big boy non-safety chain or am I gonna have to change my sprocket because they do the same thing still does and use a 325 mini which is not the same thing as a 325 they may be calling it mini I know with still it’s smaller like I stated with the 3/8 version

pardon the grammar … stihl * … talk to text does not translate well … i may just have to go to the dealer and ask if its the typical 325 or 3/8 (i have seen both versions available) if mini means shorter pitch like it does with stihl or if it is just referring to the low profile chain … again … i know with stihl there is a difference … which would simply only require changing to a regular 325 or 3/8 rim drive sprocket

About 3 years ago, I was in my local Big Box hardware store, and there was a 30-something cc HomeLite with a 12 inch bar, on the shelf, $99 (Australian). Couldn't resist. It ran OK, but wore out some plastic doo-hicky that took it out of service for a bit. It didn't take well to being run over with my 2 ton Kubota excavator (black saws tend to be hard to see on the ground..😂), but it shared a fair number of parts - bar, chain, spark plug etc - with my cheap Husky 120. So, i kept the bits that weren't busted. A Husky 120 with a 12 inch bar, BTW, cuts limb wood up to about 9 inches like it's not funny...🪓🇦🇺👍

@@waynetharp I understand the thought but also think of the buy once cry once side of things. $100 towards a $600 Stihl 261 or Husky 550 and float the rest on credit until one cut and sold 5 pickup loads of wood. How many times has Chris mentioned he wished he would have upgraded his saw or splitter much sooner than he did.
And yes for the homeowner cleanup the yard the $99special might be the way to go if not considering selling wood.
