Loofah Sponge Soap | 3 Soap Designs using Loofah Sponge | Tutorial Tuesday Ep. 151

  • Last year, I grew a really fun plant called the loofah gourd. These gourds develop a natural fiber that can be harvested and used as a sponge. Today, I show three ways that you can incorporate loofah sponges into your homemade soap. I'm sticking with a simple glycerin melt and pour soap base, but you can incorporate loofah sponges into cold process soaps as well. Which design is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

      I'm so happy to hear you found it helpful! Personally, I've found I like using the soaps best when the sponge is lying on its side. I hope your next farmers market is a huge success!

    Great idea, and nice teaching. If you spritz your melted soap with alcohol after you pour it, it gets rid of the little bubbles

    Loofah sponge are ecofriendly it’s skin can be use for fertilizer so there’s no waste and loofah sponge last for 7 months and they’re biodegradable

      And they feel so nice to use too! Sometimes it seems like ecofriendly options are missing some of the qualities I'm used to, but loofahs always feel like an upgrade to the synthetic options!

    How many loofah's would you say you harvested per plant? I am planning to try growing loofah this year. Thanks for your video. My daughter and I are inspired!

      Great question that I don't have a good answer to! 😆 The vines get super tangled on the porch rails and fence panel that I grow them on, so it's hard to tell which loofah is growing on which vine. But I'm in a loofah growing group on FaceBook (yes, I'm that obsessed with this plant haha) and from what others have posted you could get as many as 20 loofahs on a single vine. Of course, you can get as few as zero loofahs for a variety of reasons (starting too late in the year, no pollinators, bad soil, etc).
      As a rough estimate of how I did in 2021, I planted 16 seeds along a fence panel arch. Not all of those vines produced loofah (a handful didn't transplant from indoors well) but I got around 60 loofahs from those vines. So if we say 12 of the 16 vines produced loofahs, that's 60 loofahs / 12 vines or about 5 per vine. In reality, the spread was probably more like only 3 loofahs from one vine, 10 loofahs from another, etc. But that's probably a rough average in my case.
      I also might have over-planted that area. I had one random vine pop up in a garden box with good soil, and that vine produced about 14 loofahs.
      Not sure how helpful this info is. I am planning to do a video series hopefully in March documenting my loofah season from 2021 and sharing some different tips and tricks I've learned from growing them. I'm definitely not an expert at growing loofah by any means. But I've had some success growing loofah, and they're such a rewarding plant to grow! 😄

    Why didn't you use pam spray on the metal pans for easier removal????

      Didn't now that was an option! I'll keep that in mind for the future.

    If you have a septic system, the chopped loofah scrub will probably be bad news.😢

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, I've avoided using this soap bar in the sink or shower. I think it'd be bad for septic and a city's water system. I use the chopped loofah bars for outdoors by the hose. That way, the pieces just get washed into the yard and decompose there.
