Cary Hoarty likes a similar variation where each side uses a random set of 15 of the 30 checkers. If either player uses or hits the wrong checked they lose the game immediately.

I wanted to play slightly different to enjoy the concept, but ends up confuse both of us
The 43 down the beginning. “I did it on purpose to confuse myself, and my opponent”. Very funny. As if it is not confusing enough already. Hitting and leaving the “wrong” checker on the bar is very mischievous!
Insane. I actually thought about doing same colour checkers against XG, but I didn't think people would want to do this live, haha.
Live is much more fun since you can actually do the illegal play. (XG won't allow you) it is not difficult to set up if you have two identical sets, or same color checkers

The Colorless Counting idea made me wonder if I could improve my visual understanding of backgammon by better seeing where the game is moving as a whole, rather than 15 checkers vs 15 checkers. Maybe this is a good way to develop that sense! Spectating two sides playing this makes it seem next to impossible to remember which checkers are mine though - maybe it's easier when you're actually playing? And only responsible for one side? I'll have to try it out!

I can see this being a very fun competitive speed game where you can try to trick your opponent or lure them into wasting their own clock challenging you. You need a system for challenging though whereby you can defer to a transcriber as you said. Cool idea, thank you for showing us Mochy!
Haha, yeah it was just for fun, not for competition...it was challenging. He is the one who started to hit without moving! Respect!
In this type of game it doesn't make any sense to permit illegal moves. After an illegal move the opponent can move any random checker and the situation can't be resolved. It is confusing (but fun) thia variation, but moving the checkers not in the normal way (because the final) position because of the same color checkers is identical ) makes it impossible to follow for a spectator.
