Such a classic gig! Only us old timers really remember Ernestine. I will frequently answer the phone with her oft-repeated "Is this the person with whom I am speaking?" I mostly get dead air in response 😂
I save my best responses for the scammers from the Indian subcontinent. Esp. the SSA and IRS "agents." I've been so ugly to them that, while they apparently can't take me off the main call list, they HAVE put me on a "do not reply" list, as nowadays when I select the option to speak to "an agent," their system just hangs up on me. :) :) :)
I remember seeing that. The good old days of watching great tv. Laugh-in was always so hilarious. Ruth Buzzi & Arte Johnson were hysterically funny as the couple on the park bench..
To anyone old enough to have watched this. Be very thankful of all the entertainment we were able to grow up with. The music and the shows like Hee Haw, the Smothers Brothers, the Monkees, and of course, Laugh in.
Thank you so much for showing the full skit!! It was wonderful I’m so old I remember seeing that live the first time LMAO Lilly Tomlin operator routine was all the shit back then 50 years ago, and it still is😂😂😂😂👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️💖💕💖
I remember as a grade-school boy watching Ernestine and I considered her an old character. Now? I see this great clip and think "she is _so_ young here!" It's a matter of perspective, and whichever end of time you're viewing from, she was definitely funny!
CLEAN Humor at it's BEST !!! No F-Bombs or other rude language, just a well-written script, delivered by one of the BEST Comediennes ever. Very little programming today even comes close...
Another funny sketch on Laugh-in was when Tyrone came to sit down next to Gladys on the park bench. He asked her, "Do you believe in the hereafter?" She said "Yes" to which Tyrone responded, "then you know what I'm here after!" So damn funny!
I remember when Ringo Starr was a guest on Laugh-In. He was sitting on the bench with Gladys when she asked him, "Ringo, have you ever been busted?" He says "No.", then leans over to look at her front. Then he says "And it looks like you haven't been, either." Gladys gets offended, and begins beating Ringo with her purse!
What a great time to have something light and fun in this crazy world. Thanks for posting. , could not sleep at three in the morning and happen to come across this.
I used to work a switchboard like that one. And yes, it IS a power move to do that. I had to pull the plug on a very rude and obnoxious caller once. But before I did, I interrupted her weird, screaming rant. I said "Guess what? I do impressions! And now, here's my impression of Dr. Jack Kevorkian!" and I pulled the plug. My boss almost fell off her chair from laughing.
Brilliance. The standard for comedy is if it is timeless. Lily Tomlin's sketch is as timely now as it was then. Just change the names of (some of) the car companies.
I'm 95 and still remember crank phones, tel operators, party lines, and long distance operators. Kids used to play telephone with two cans and a long wire connecting. You won't believe all the many jokes about them.
In the '60's the law firm I worked for had a similar switchboard. Always wanted to say "is this the party to whom I am speaking" but didn't -- I needed the job. Plug boards were nightmares waiting to happen -- accidentally disconnect the Big Guy's call and you were instantly a former employee. Ernestine brought much-needed laughter to a thankless job.
Feel you! I love the invasive automated calls about who I’m going to vote for. I’m going to vote for whoever can kick your telephonic invasive trespassing ass to stop you from thinking my cave is for your anonymous input. Just saying for a friend
Hey there! I came across your comment and I just had to reach out and say hi. Your perspective really caught my attention and I would love to get to know you better. Would you be interested in chatting sometime? Looking forward to hearing back from you!🤗
No foul language needed when you're a good comedian. Memories for me lol. I use the is this the person to whom I'm speaking to with old friends. And we have a good laugh. Thanks Lilly ❤🤣
How could we forget, it's like waking up in the middle of your colonoscopy, a very bad experience. Even so, he's better than 90 percent of the Republicans in office now.
Oh my gosh! Her humor cannot be beat! My husband and I used to watch Laugh In all the time. It was great. You can’t get shows like that and some of the other TV classics anymore. Shame. TV isn’t even worth watching except if you’re trying to get some sleep and you need some help being bored out of your mind!!
There is an episode of the Dragnet radio show where Friday has to make a long distance call from LA to a town in Utah. We hear every step, the operator in the police building verifying he's authorized,, her calling the local long distance operator who connects with the operator in Sacramento, who connects to the operator in Salt Lake City, and then the operator in the small town calling through to the house where the person Friday wanted to talk to was.. It wasn't until I heard that that I realized why making long distance calls used to be such a big deal.

I've always wanted to just never thought about at the right time,,, I over analyze it
If you call me you won’t get dead air… love Ernestine!!
I well remember Ernistine in, was it Laugh In. Lillian is an amazingly talented actress.🦘🐨😁
Lily Tomlin was a comedic genius. Well ahead of her time.😊
Still is..
Great dramatic actress, too. I was pleasantly surprised when she appeared on The West Wing as the president's secretary.

Laugh-In had such a talented cast…legends!
Verrrrry interesting... 😂
Arte Johnson's character's salacious line, "Want a walnetto?" reportedly singlehandedly saved the company that made walnettos (a confection).
My father used to occasionally say "is this the party to whom I am speaking" when he'd call me. Today I learned where he got that from. LOL
Your father had a great sense of humour 🤣
The whole Milhous piece was spectacular!! Thank you, Lily Tomlin for your timeless work as our favorite operator!!!

Laughed all the way through this just as I did originally! Sure miss this show!

Laugh In was awesome and such an incredible cast..Lilly Tomlin classic wit of the 70s she's one of the amazing ones!
She was my absolute favorite on Laugh In
Not mine. I was too young to understand. Tears coming down my face now.
She was such a hoot! I still laugh my head off watching this sketch.
she isn't dead
PRICELESS I am old so i know what she is talking about...Thanks...
So glad I got to watch her growing up. My mom was a telephone operator for a doctor's answering service. And she sometimes would sound like her....
I forgot how much of a legend that character was.
Never seen her before, but what a classic! "So he can call you before he makes a decision."!
Man this brings back so many memories, I remember watching Laugh-In with my grandparents. Those were the days.
Laugh in was one of the best shows alongside of Carol Burnett
I truly love Lily Tomlin. ❤️. She's hilarious. I used to watch her on Laugh In.

Laugh In was the best comedy show of it’s time 😂
My husband is a car enthusiast, he will enjoy hearing this skit, so 🤣 funny!!
Still relevant. Still hilarious!😂
That was pure comic genius. If you have a grasp of history, it still works today. Someone explain it to the younger folks. They didn't catch a word.

Problem is, the satire expressed is still valid today.
The jokes are Classics. The VISUALS add so much to what she's saying makes it seem 'almost normal'.
Anyone know who wrote her terrific comedy material?
Even this very basic comedy sketch seems superior to everything presented these days.
I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF to this girl. *Lily Tomlin. She was one Smoky Hot Babe back in the day.*

And still remains the same, as the old (French) proverb says.
