    I served for 25 years, 1971-1996. I loved every minute of it, and retired as a Warrant Officer with a great pension. Just looking through the content of some msg's, some of the individuals seem to be having a hard time in Civi Street. Outside is what you make of it as is when you are in. Since I retired I've taught and lead outdoor education in many parts of the world, qualified at National and International levels, kayaking sea and inland, mountaineering / rock climbing summer and winter MIC IML, mountain ski tour leader, mine leader level 2. I was a freelance Graphic Designer for two years, built computers for a year, went to college and got 5 A grade GCSE's and 5 City and Guilds certificates, qualified as an NBQ assesor, delivery driver moving up to deputy manager for two years, qualified as a bicycle mechanic, qualified as a tree surgeon age 62 ( still work in this industry ). It's out there if you open your eyes, I've been self employed since 1996 with only two years in a none self employed role. By the way I never bothered with a course prior leaving, I left and took three months off to travel which I still done for two months of the year, with my with and two dogs. I own my house, no credit card, no loans and only either save for or buy with cash once I've had a good barter.
    REMEBER THE WORLD IS OUT THERE TAKE IT WITH BOTH HANDS, AND STOP DREAMING!!!!

    I served in the Army from 2002 to 2011. Was a private soldier in the infantry (becoming a junior NCO) served in Iraq and Afghan then became an officer after leaving and rejoing to go to Sandhurst and receiving my Commission. Seeing both sides of the rank structure and being out in civvy street for 10 years, the reason the lowest ranks get micro managed so much is if you give them any leeway they take the p*ss I hate to say. This p*ss taking has cost lives out on ops. I can count on both hands the amount of times someone being lazy and a fk up has cost someone their leg or life. Add in that there's no wars going on right now the morale must be pretty low so probably does feel more like jail. Sodexo are useless aswell and the military should never have been privatized. To be honest though, the Army is a hard life and most people only do the 4 years or whatever it is now. You can be proud to say you have served X amount of years in the British Army, put it on your CV and feel good going forward and wish you the best with your future.

      Obviously not army material. I met plenty of these little moaning wimps during my 16 years in the RA. Although I retired a Sgt on MT it was 7 years before I got my L/Bdr stripe. The accommodation we had in Germany was nothing near as modern and neat shown in this video. We lived in barrack blocks that had housed the German army through two world wars. If he is not happy with his battery and bosses he can always request a posting or better still apply himself and get a stripe himself. The biggest mistake I made was to leave the army early. I serves in a terrific battery in a great regt. Before covid I would meet up with old buddies monthly through the RAA and privately. The RA is a great branch of the army and this little pratt's comments do it a great dis-service. So goodbye and good riddance.

Treated like shite by people that don’t care about anyone else bar themselves and their careers, I loved the army it was an awesome part of my life and I think if those nobbers weren’t there I could have gone the distance. long range snipers, but serious the problem today is the manpower , or the lack of it , which means units will have to double up on duties , basically doing the work of two, as for the rest like join the Army and see the world , forget it , ok if you are lucky to get a two year tour in Cyprus , the rest are 6 month deployments like the UN in Africa etc , then of course active service which if things kick off big time, will find you rotating in country on a bigger frequency, on back to back tours , again all down to being under strength , as for the rest like pay and conditions i get the impression that the Armed forces are now starting to wake up to the idea that in 2021 they look really unattractive compared to outside and need to address that given the recruitment is massively down .

    There are always those not suited for a military career and yes there are bad times and negativity. When you let that get to you, then your definitely not suited The majority get on with it. Im not decrying your reasoning but nearly all of these are personal and thats ok for you as a person but that can affect others attitudes and thats not good. Is civvy street better ????????????? . Most jobs you may try but many you will walk away from as they dont suit, the workload, the hours, the pay, job security, a guaranteed roof over your head and hot meals every day. None of that is a guarantee.
    Yes it can be mundane and boring but will civvy, guarantee you any better. Plenty ex service men homeless living on the streets. I did 15 years and there were many menial jobs but also many times you dont have time to think. My first detachment was in Zambia at the Rhodesian border then onto Aden followed by a great 3 years in Cyprus. British Honduras and finishing in Germany. Between these times i was stationed in UK and at those times we did many exercises outside UK. I was married then and it was hard as little time was at home. Im retired now but have to say my reduced service pension helps my state pension
    I felt i had done my time and came out. What a shock to the system, I tried many jobs and couldn't bereave how bad they were run. I had to rent as no matter the job didnt earn enough to buy.

      @J0NNY1576 Před 3 lety +3

      The UK national security risk that you mention is a product of the military recruiting people unsuitable or unwilling to serve.
      It's not a game, a lifestyle choice or a "break" from civilian life. The MoD and therefore the UK taxpayer spends hundreds of thousands of pounds on each soldier in order to recruit, train, equip and accommodate them. This systemic failure by Capita in its delivery of recruitment on behalf of the MoD is highlighted by cases like this individual. The MoD and the taxpayer doesn't get value for money or an adequate return of service from individuals whose expectations of army life are unfulfilled by their own lack of grit, determination and hunger to succeed and progress.
      The British Army will not miss this waste of rations, if he was worth retaining the RA would have done so.

    Damn man sorry to hear these reasons; aspiring to be an officer in the army be go through Sandhurst etc this sounds bad. Then again some officers are great others like you said seem shit. Nonetheless, all the best with what you do after the army chief.

    Hey mate, I’m joining the army, trying to decide between Artillery to do the ‘UAV’ or the Engineers, I ultimately want to go the commando route either way, what are your thoughts on the UAV job role, and do you know how that compares to what the engineers do? Thanks for your help

      If you was after my honest opinion I’d say do what ever you want to do. Just do what you want to do. And stick with that.
      I can’t comment on either I don’t know enough about them.

    Could be worse mate, could be up in Scotland where last week it hit -11 and have no hot water or heating in the block for the past 2-3 weeks, but it’s alright we have new carpets getting fitted in a run down shitty old block, that will keep us happy👍🏻 oh, not only having to move blocks whilst this is happening, but move to a block that has also no hot water or heating and was also used as the ‘covid block’... all the best mate!
