  • A new study from the University of Bonn has investigated whether a protein found in cow's milk can lead to damage of the central nervous system. In this video, MStranslate co-founder, Brett Drummond, discusses the findings of this research and what it means for people living with multiple sclerosis.

    Thanks for this informative overview! I understand it is too early to draw conclusions, but this is groundbreaking research, in my opinion. I became milk protein intolerant a few years prior to getting MS. The first eight years after diagnosis I had constant MS progression. In year 8,I finally cut out all milk products and from that point on, I have not had any MS progression, and in fact, I have gotten some function back. It has been like winning the lottery! If cutting out milk could benefit even 10% (let alone 42%) of MS suffers, it would be a huge step forward. For those it applies to, cutting out milk is a very easy fix and a much less invasive approach than doing an immune system reboot (HSCT), which many of the MS suffers here in Norway are doing.

      Thanks for your kind words about the video Ann and thank you also for sharing your own personal insights into this research. It is fantastic that you have managed to find something that has given you significant benefits! Stay tuned for many more research videos, as well as live updates from ECTRIMS later in the year. Kind regards - Brett (MStranslate co-founder)

    I have had m.s for 19 years. Several years ago, I cut all dairy out of my diet and saw my relapses reduce significantly. Also, as a baby, my sister was allergic to cow's milk and had to have goat milk. I never had any noticeable problems with dairy growing up.

    Yup, it sure does. Just two Summers ago, seems before they formally diagnosed me this year, I was living in denial. But, for several years, I noticed, every time I had a big bowl of Wheeties with Milk, I noticed how my vision in my eye became cloudy, as if there was some sort of connection to the milk and MS problems. What happened in just a year or so, was the way I began losing my vision in my right eye of all places. Sure, after I went on Wahl's, eight weeks later my vision came back, but as most of us know, Wahl's does not allow dairy on the Wahl's Protocol, and I am convinced Dairy plays an integral part in contributing to MS Disease Progression.

    Very interesting video & study! Thank you for breaking it down :) I personally wouldn't really consider 42% a "small" percentage though. As a cascade effect it might actually make sense though that the introduction of milk / casein triggers the Autoimmune response - especially if it has similar characteristics to myelin. Perhaps you need a dysbiosis in the gut / leaky gut combined with repeated/frequent exposure to cheese/milk + low vit D for the immune system to get confused and target these things in the blood initially. At some point this attack will naturally migrate to the brain / CNS if the B / T cells think they're seeing the same threat again... To be on the safe side though it is an easy recommendation to avoid dairy in general... I can miss out on milk if that avoids a serious inflammation being triggered..

      Hi John, thanks for your comment. As I said in the video, I don't think we are at the point from these findings yet to suggest that people living with multiple sclerosis need to stop consuming cow's milk. In saying that, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence from people in the MS community that reducing their dairy intake can provide some benefits. In terms of overall dietary modifications, it does seem that diet can be an effective way of helping to manage MS, but the exact things that should and shouldn't be included often needs to be figured out on an individual basis. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask as you go through this diagnosis process. We will help answer as many as we can and I may be able to direct you to other videos that we've produced that may help. Take care - Brett

      @@MStranslate1 Hi Brett. Thanks for the reply and for the vids in general.
      Been following for a while as my symptoms are verrry MS-like. I was diagnosed today with a boney growth in a neck vertebrae pressing on the spinal cord, so probably not MS. Not sure if that's good or bad news, but it's a diagnosis nonetheless.
      Thanks and keep up the good work.

    Thank you for saying not to jump to conclusions and panic, because cutting certain food group that is abundantly used in different food products can be very stressful and we know stress is not good and maybe can affect the health and we don’t need that, i wish future studies don’t find a link to certain food groups instead taking certain supplements can be beneficial

  • @tsaehtron

    Thank you - that was really interesting and eye-opening (I've just subscribed your channel). I think another significant quetion would be about the amount of casein injected into the mice. They have quite small bodies, so maybe there was realtively a large amount of protein they had to tackle. Tha would lead to another question - do people with MS who have problems with casein have to avoid milk altogether, or reduce it.

      Hi Quantum Decoherence, thanks for the comment. We have recently invested in an excellent microphone for these videos, which hopefully you have noticed the improved sound quality on some of our recent work (e.g. the recent EBV videos). Unfortunately, I didn't have access to that microphone as I was recording this video, and as I was getting a lot of feedback on this study, I wanted to publish the video as soon as possible. We did run the preview of it past a few people to make sure they could hear everything clearly, but we do recognise that it is a little lower than we would like. Hopefully you don't have any problems with any of the future content. Thanks - Brett

    I don't want to explicitly state what appears to be obvious (and has been for years) that dairy consumption is associated with disease. I understand that the cow industry will not look kindly upon these findings, and have the resources to make my life difficult if I come right out and say what I actually think.

    • @MStranslate1
      @MStranslate1  Před 2 lety

      Hi John, thanks for the comment. I think this research starts to go some way of providing some data to potentially support the anecdotal evidence that we have from many people in the MS community of benefits to minimising their dairy intake. I don't think that that experience will be universal, which is highlighted in this study as well from the less than half of people living with MS that had myelin cross-reactivity to the casein, but it may certainly be something to consider for some people. We always encourage open communication on our platforms, so please always feel supported in sharing your thoughts here. Kind regards, Brett

      Hi Sara, thanks for the question. I haven't seen any data yet that has specifically looked into that question, so I can't give a definitive answer. However, I can say that the form of casein (the protein that they have looked at in this study) is different in cow's milk compared to goat milk. Whether or not those differences lead to a different cross-reactivity to myelin, we don't yet have the answer to that. It is an interesting question and we'll be providing any updates when they become available. Thanks - Brett

    Thank you for the video. Is Epstein-Barr virus mentioned in this study? Scientific community has eluded that EBV is likely the necessary trigger for MS or even the cause. Some people may actually lose the benefits of moderate dairy products consumption hoping that their symptoms could be suppressed. Does cow milk re-activate EBV?

    • @MStranslate1
      @MStranslate1  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi K Kara, thanks for the comment and question. They didn't look at EBV in this study, but it is an interesting question that you raise. I haven't seen any research that has looked into this, though considering the large numbers of people that have been previously infected with EBV and drink cow's milk, I would think that we may see more issues if that was the case. In terms of the EBV story, I think it will be interesting to see now what other environmental and genetic factors it is interacting with to trigger MS. If you haven't yet had a chance to watch them, I recorded a couple of video summaries discussing the latest EBV research. You can watch them via the links here:
