The Battle of Castle Itter: When the US and Germany Fought Together in WW2
Vložit
- čas přidán 24. 03. 2019
- It was one of the strangest battles of WW2 in which a most unlikely team of soldiers came together in one of the most heroic stories of the war.
Early in the afternoon on May 3, 1945, a Yugoslavian prisoner named Zvonimir Čučković left the gates of Austria’s Itter Castle, the looming fortress on a hill where he was being held by SS guards and bicycled into the thick forests beyond. He was supposed to be running an errand for the prison’s commander, Sebastian Wimmer - a not infrequent occurrence, as Čučković had earned the commander’s trust as a maintenance man and electrician who had helped convert the castle into a German prison.
But Čučković had an ulterior motive that afternoon. He was carrying a contraband note written by English-speaking prisoners inside. He had agreed to take the note out of prison and present it to the first group of American soldiers he encountered. And so, instead of running the errand and returning to the castle as he usually did, he continued riding.
Čučković considered making the short ride west to Wörgl, a small city close to the German/Austrian border. But the town was still densely occupied by German troops, and so instead he made the much longer trip to Innsbruck, riding over 40 miles along the Inn River valley. He reached the city that evening, where he succeeded in tracking down a group of Americans - the 409th Infantry Regiment of the American 103rd Infantry Division - and passed on his note. The unit did not have the authorization to move forward with a rescue attempt themselves, but they promised Čučković a definitive answer from their headquarters by the next morning.
What followed is one of the more extraordinary and unlikely stories of World War II; the story of an American Army commander working together with his enemy - an SS captain and a Wehrmacht major - to lead a mixed company of American and German troops to an Austrian castle and rescue a group of French political prisoners. What is now known as, the Battle for Castle Itter.

I read about this over 20 years ago, but only as a small caption to a picture of the castle. I never knew much about it until this video. Quite fascinating.
Soldiers in many countries joined the SS and German military branches during WW2. This was voluntary and often the reasons used for joining was to fight the Russian army
Yes, for example 14 countries willingly joined Germany when they invaded Russia.
@ How voluntary was joining the Waffen-SS? Very voluntary. It was rather a question of being admitted or not. An estimated 25,000 to 40,000 Dutch men voluntarily joined the Waffen-SS during WWII, and they had to match admission conditions. That was not the regular army. The Germans grew more and more disillusioned about their decision to allow Russians and Ukrainians into their armies, as they seemed to cause more detriment than advantage. But that was not the Waffen-SS.
Given our current international political situation, it would be worth reassessing how we've usually interpreted WW2 along national lines. There were groups in every country that supported "the other side's" ideologies, or even it's efforts. And some factions that supported no one (pacifists, anarchists). It would be interesting to see how many in each country supported other sides, and how few supported, or only partially supported, the official government position in their own country.
Beyond that, "Axis/ Allies" divide hides how many international factions were cobbled together inside those two coalitions. The most obvious possibly being the Western capitalist and Soviet communist alliance that started falling apart even before V-E Day. For instance, in Asian countries still colonized by Europe, some nationalists supported Germany or Japan as part of their own strategy to kick Britain, etc. out of their own land.
WW2 could be seen as the first post-monarchical conflict of ideologies for domination of the industrial era... the first such conflict, definitely not the last. Capitalist, fascist, communist (and socialist?) factions had their first climax level conflict over how to organize industriizing/ industrialized societies. While the fascist coalition lost that battle, it should now to clear that their ideology was definitely not vanquished. In fact, with the current reshuffling of both Russia and possibly the US into a white nationalist/ fascist camp, there is no clear long term line demarcating countries into permanent ideological camps. History hasn't ended, by a long shot.
@ extremely, Everyone was way more afraid of communism than the nazis and would do anything to delay the Russians from taking France ect
@@itslife9855 Partially. Everyone had seen what communism had done and were keen to get rid of it... however that being said those which joined the SS were spared what the Germans had in store for their countries which was far worse.

Well, do you expect there to be cameras filming this battle? If you were in a battle or on a time sensitive mission would you stop to take a couple photos?
