  • Join me as I attempt my first ramblings of a game review following my Let's Play series of Star Trek TNG: A Final Unity. A fun little adventure game that really only shines if you're a Star Trek fan, otherwise its probably just a pretty average adventure game. #startrek #tng #gaming #review

      Universally positive responses so far. People enjoy your laid-back and conversational approach combined with soothing jazz in the background. Very RLM but with a British twist.

    This is a game from my childhood.
    I was 6 years old and a massive star trek fan. Loved every minute.

    I know it'll never happen, but I'd love to see a remake/remaster of this game, with updated visuals. The story is pretty good and it has all the voice acting and all.

      Honestly, I think it's one of those games that works perfectly as a product on it's time.

      The 2D visuals are still beautiful and don’t need an update.
      The CG stuff and the space battles, maybe. But they still hold up decently too.

    This was also one of my first PC games and it will always hold a special place for me. I'm glad to see it get some attention.

    The Chodak were in Generations as well. I wish they were canon too.
    Also with random encounters you can fight Klingon Bird of Preys and rumours you can fight a Borg cube but be killed in one hit. That could be true cause in the games files theres a Borg character portrait as well as their logo and theres even a Cardassian portrait too.
    The Chodak were also in the Sega/Nintendo games but their design was different in those they looked just like Baron Greenback from Dangermouse lol

      Generations was massively underrated, and I love how Microprose had their own internal lore that linked the games. Brilliant developer.

    Thanks for doing a review of AFU. The nostalgia was at maximum warp for this one ;) It was nice to relive the moments of my first ever PC game. Btw, you did a great job with the Free Form review. Keep up the good work 👊

    I bought this game when I was a megafan of TNG and it was a massive critical hit so I thought it would be perfect. Unfortunately I think I was a bit too young and also never been good at adventure games. I got absolutely nowhere from what I can remember. I beamed down to the different planets that you can visit near the start and was totally baffled. I remember wandering back and fourth, restarting, flying around and getting blown up by warbirds. I still think it is a shame that such a detailed and rich game was so inaccessible.

    11:50 Let me guess, you didn't know about the Shift-key speeding up the process?
    13:15 You get branching storylines depending on how you deal with the initial encounter. (Blow up the Garidian commander or talk her down.) It can lead to some pretty dark stuff.
    15:26 This is my personal opinion, of course, but I like that it makes space feel vast and unique encounters are not a given. (If everything is special then nothing is.) I do think that it is unfortunate that the deep space stations don't really serve a purpose or have a "view-screen" presence. The computer entries have got some nice foreshadowing about the region and the plot which helps to sell it as a "real place" to me.

    • @ange1uk
      @ange1uk  Před rokem +1

      Oh I know about the shift key to speed things up, I didn't as a young kid though :D

      @@ange1uk Did you know about getting changes to the story by blowing up the Garidian commander?
      I have also seen different personalities if you talk her down in different ways.

      @@enterprise-h312 I know there are a handful of critical points which affect the flow of the story in different ways. I wasn't aware of this one though. How does that affect the Unity Device section if you kill Pentara?

    • @enterprise-h312
      @enterprise-h312 Před rokem

      @@ange1uk I am going to leave some space just in case for the spoiler if you wish to experience the twist for yourself.
      SPOILER
      Pentara will survive, heavily mutilated when she first appears with a mechanical mask leaving her wounds to the player's imagination, and later "patched up" using 24th century medical technology. As one might imagine trying to kill her will make her a lot less amiable to the player. For example, she will NOT warn you about holding your fire near the Unity Device. (Important for when Brodnack tries to trick you.) It will also affect her dialogue with the Kabilan.

    • @ange1uk
      @ange1uk  Před rokem +1

      @@enterprise-h312 Ah yes I actually remember this now, or at least remember seeing an image of Pentara wearing the mask. Its cool there is some variety, though not nearly as complex as some of todays branching narratives can be ofc :)

    Regardless of the dev getting back to you or not, would love to see you do one more vid on some of the alt takes, like finding the UD for example. Which requires a degree of "time travel" in order to locate, quite a current science thing given the new telescope that has recently produced pictures from the big bang!

    My brain messed up and somehow I thought, you're gonna be talking about Strange New Worlds. :P It's good, you say? I dropped after few episodes from both Discovery and Picard, while Lower Decks become rather tideous and repeatable after two seasons.

    • @ange1uk
      @ange1uk  Před 2 lety +4

      I think SNW benefits from being episodic in nature instead of serialised story arcs. You get a story per episode that resolve at the end of the episode, there's no galactic doom level threats, the Captain is very likeable, most of the crew I can remember their names and aren't completely irritating and overall it feels... hopeful and generally is actually more about exploring. It still suffers from this modern eras preference for 'witty/snappy' dialogue that is too contemporary. Basically its the most Star Trek attempt at being Star Trek. If they had started the new Trek era with this, I think it would've gone much better. Sadly Discovery and Picard still.... exist. But I just head canon them away :D

    Random crewmembers were created for the missions so that you could avoid ever using Troi, clearly. ;)

      What would you suggest in its place? I tried to choose something that was non intrusive (and copyright free)

    • @okona1up
      @okona1up Před 2 lety +1

      @@ange1uk Hmm, usually I'd say most of the time no bgm would be necessary. IMHO that works well on a lot of channels.
      Otherwise, the channel LGR uses some very non intrusive smooth jazz type music, also mixed very silent in the bg. Additionally I'd also use the ducking feature.
      In your case, it might be possible to use some of the game background sounds (albeit very silently).
      I do applaud you for venturing into the review category!

    Does anybody knows what cpu cycles in dosbox to change it to. It default is set to auto so i tried 1000 up to 4000 but the game won't start up unless i put it back to auto as i am trying to stop it from playing to fast like it is in the video

    • @ange1uk
      @ange1uk  Před rokem

      I used D-Fend when playing this and simply left it at 'Auto' when it came to CPU cycles. But you can also set a shortcut so you can step down/up the CPU cycles by a percentage as you're playing so you can adjust on the fly, this is how I did it anyway but otherwise I don't know what the magic number is.
