- Sub-Saharan migrants living in Tunisia have been the target of a surge in racist attacks, following a February 21 speech by President Kais Said denouncing what he called "hordes of illegal immigrants". Since then, many migrants have been urgently trying to return to their countries of origin. The Ivory Coast in particular has organised a repatriation of its citizens, who have had to pack up their lives and leave with just a few days' notice. Our correspondents in Tunis and Abidjan followed some of them, from their hasty departure to their arrival in a country that some of them had left long ago.

It's terrible what happened to these Ivoriens in Tunis, but unfortunately, uncontrolled and unlimited migration into another society only leads to disharmony and a breakdown in social cohesion. Like him or loathe him, Tunisia's president wasn't wrong in underlining his concerns regarding illegal immigration into his country and the socio-economic consequences of such a phenomenon.

While I feel sympathy for these individuals I can understand why this has become a problem for Tunisia. It is a small country with a low birth rate. Jobs must be scarce. Meanwhile Ivory Coast has a birth rate of 4 or 5 children per woman. It is not sustainable for countries like that to simply export their excess population to other countries.

People who applied for these documentations never receive them and there’s no reason, many people give their papers what they ask for but no Tunisians keep them go and back for years without giving them proper documents.
