- Hi, this video shows me attempting to repair a PS3 Slim CECH-3003A which has no power and no lights. It has already had the power supply checked on another PS3 Slim and it works OK. Let's see if we can find out what is wrong with it. This is the last item in the joblot sent in by Mike from 1up Gaming.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince. - Jak na to + styl
I just picked up a PS3 on the ole 'bay with no power... I'm hoping it's something like this that will get me going with a cheap bluray player for under $20. Solid fix, Vince, as always! Thanks for all the hours of fixes and learning you've provided!
Repaired many consoles having this kind of issue. Mostly 3000 series the wifi/bt module needs replacement together with the chip step down converter. Once you replaced the chip and module, you can add a 2.0v zener diode shunted at the output to protect the module in the event the chip failed again.
Damn, maybe mine needs this but i think that repair is beyond me. New power supply didnt work anyway.
can u guide me i have error code 8002f1f9
Yes! Another Vince vid, gonna go brew some coffee, relax, and watch!
Nice fix Vince. Just a tip when troubleshooting by removing SMD components like resistors and capacitors, it's usually easier to just rotate the components 90 or 180 degrees so only one pad is connected. That way you take them out of circuit but they're still anchored to the PCB so you don't lose them or forget where they are from
Thanks for this tip. I am now using it (as of my last video) and it is really helpful. Saves worrying about orientation on diodes and makes testing caps etc. much easier. Really useful, thanks for sharing it :-)
But the trackwill cut in some cases
Found your channel around the start of quarentine and wow, ive watched at least 2 videos a day and sometimes more like 5 and im still working through tha back catalogue. Love your vids a ton, keep putting them out!
same here
I've had a broken system for a while now and took it to pieces to use the power button (DSW-001) as a jumper for my pc when its not in a case. More than happy to send you the wifi module mate.
People didn't like the loud beeping of the multimeter? Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who knows how that volume knob on their speakers work.
I do not wish to decrease the volume every time he uses it.
@@elephystry You wouldn't have to if it was set correctly in the first place.
Good work. I love that your just a regular guy having a go and learning from it I think that’s the best way of learning being thrown in the deep end and working it out for yourself. Thanks for all the info keep up the good work I’m mid modding a sim ps2 and original Xbox good times.
Nice one Vince, great vlog again. keep em coming
Hey Mate.. I love your vids.. just broke a joy con trying to fix it.. gotta keep trying though!! take care.
It most likely has a crowbar circuit which causes the pwr supply to shut down when a fault is detected. Disconnecting the main source for a period of time, long enough to reset the crowbar circuit. It a protection circuit.
You're a delight to watch mate. But be more careful when handling the ac psu, you got capacitors that might unload if you manage to short it shortly after disconnecting the plug!
Thank you so much for your videos. I just bought a cheap ps3 super slim and your diagnosis with the controller is exactly my issue. Now I know there is an fix. THANKS SO MUCH!.
I love your new intro, Vince.
Always love these videos
Remarkable recover, why it seemed like just earlier today you were utterly and completely voiceless, and WOW! here you are now like as if you never lost your voice.. APU I dropped a like oh and yo duh Man!..
good workaround. Totally worth the effort to remove the parts to get a functional PS3
Another awesome video =D Anyone who says you didn't fix it is missing the point that the motherboard was shutting off the PSU - it was completely dead, now its useable!!! Maybe one day when you get a scrap unit you might be able to re-visit the Wifi =D
screaming at screen, Vince. wifi is also a Bluetooth (controller) combo chip...
yip the chip has two wires connected to it - wifi and bluetooth. He could use a controller with a usb dongle for wireless. Also the internet browser works without firmware update. I've got 3 consoles like this.
also he doesent know how to properly check for shorts ,there are discharge resistors and of chors its shorted cuz probably has another conection to ground
Ihihhvbnjhb no
This video gave new life to my PS3! I use it as a blue ray player in my semi truck and had the exact problem you described. If this video wasn't so detailed I never would have gone at the brain of this thing with a soldering iron. Thank you!
Is it fix now 😮
@@Waris-nd2dr yes, working great
@@tactical_trucker4761 my ps3 not starting what Is the problem
@@Waris-nd2dr When you plug it in does the red light come on showing it's getting power? If it doesn't then the solution in this video is the fix for it. It's a faulty chip installed by Sony and removing the components shown here fixes it. Just understand that this could destroy your PS3. My thoughts were it didn't work currently they worst I could do is make it still not work.
I think my ps3 time is over 😂😂@@tactical_trucker4761
Great video Vince.
Great video Vince my 6 year old son loves watching your videos and now tells me how to connect his games consoles to different tv's he loves your switch videos
You could measure the voltage after the regulator on a working board. If I am right it will be 3.3V. If so, you can replace the regulator with any 3.3V drop in replacement (one with all parts needed)
Most advanced power supplies these days have protection circuits that can detect over current, over voltage and short circuits as well as thermal cutoff. If something is shorting out the power supply it will activate the protection circuit and turn itself off. When you unplug it from the shorted board it will remain off until you remove all the power from the PSU (and let time for the caps to drain). Than it will turn on again. If it's a thermal fuse you will have to wait until it cools down.
If that ever happens you will need to check the power rails of the board for shorts or low impedance
I love the way your mind works Vince! I've learned quite a bit watching your videos. Thank you for your time and considerable talent.
Great vid as always
Yaaaaay a good video to watch before bed
I’m watching this is bed

You really should take the watch off when working on mains appliances. I was working in a comercial 3com network switch and had to do some live diagnosis with it plugged in, and I was wearing my metal apple watch band. I rest my hand on a live heatsink accidentally, and i got a shock straight through my rist. Lucky that I only used one hand and not both.
I just plugged in my PS3 yesterday.
Instant video on fixing a PS3.
*N I C E*
Same I just hooked mine up yesterday as well after picking up some cheap games to mess around in.
Luv ur videos vince. Keep it up!!!! 👌
Hi, Vince. I was wondering that there is a cover on the wifi chip if I remembered it right from the last video. How about taking off the cover and cheching what is wrong inside. I think it will be much easier to switch components inside the cover since the main chip is not a bga one. In this way, there will be no need to mess around with the bga stuff.
You’re right Vince we always take the red light for granted
You underestimate the power of the PS3 regarding its capabilities Vince, as well as dedicated players who still play to this day :)
I was thinking: man I wish this reassembly video was a trying to fix one. Wish granted. Thanks Vince, you read our minds! 😊
Hey Vince, liked the video! I also had the same problem as yours. I had a PS3 Slim 3012A Model, It didnt have no lights like yours. I got mine repaired like late 2018. If i remebered correctly, The technician soildered two wires in the places where that black square looking chip would be. My PS3 doesent have a hard drive, and we bought a new hard drive, and we go to update it, it checked the components therefore it was updated. I can't really remember because it was years ago. Fast foward to now, i sold it back in 2020 because of i want to trade it for a PC.
If you try updating, even with a usb it will brick it, until you get a wifi card and then restore it with a usb, i learned that the hard way :P
This ^ take this warning seriously.
Nope. It will output an error (ending up on a loop, like he said on the video). It won't brick your console. Where do you got that from? Your might had other problem cause with NO BT/WIFI you won't get a brick by trying to update the official firmware! Now some CFW's (custom firmwares) can brick your console. It's reparable if you have a backup of your NOR.
@@Falcon_Indestro So, updating with a usb will certainly fail, and cause a boot loop, of sorts? I would have thought it was definitely the way to go....
What about updating the HD on another ps3 then putting it back or does it also need to copy files into the flash storage
F4lc0n Ind3str0 its called a soft brick
Love the new intro
Excellent fix Vince! I love your videos on these complicated consoles like the switch Xbox ps3 etc , they're usually avoided by most people as they're rather daunting to work on , while you just go straight in, and most of the time get them working !!
You are right about not really needing to update too , PS3 online isn't going to be around for long, and what most people do with PS3s is downgrade them to Version 3.55 which let's you run any game , and allows for lots of modding and homebrew and such. So the fact you can't update really shouldn't be a problem at all, I'd say this is a great fix ! Well done
One thought is that the WiFi chips regulator ic , the thing that was making the pulse which killed the WiFi chip , what if you replaced just that ?
If you replace the whole WiFi chip but not the ic , then the ic will kill the WiFi,
But if you replace the ic but not the WiFi, the new IC should be unharmed, and there's a chance the original WiFi chip may still work ?
Your videos always make my day so much better I opened up my PS4 and cleaned it by wacthing one of your videos
Look who got himself a new intro.
I love your videos BTW
Real
It's useful not to unsolder component completely during debugging, but just shift it and leave one pin soldered. May prevent some mistakes or component loss later.
I think you need to start experimenting by using your power supply to diagnose shorts. Low Voltage/ High current injection into the PCB will manifest itself as extreme heat and you can pinpoint the component with the short very easily. Freeze spray or Lighter petrol are good for observing the heat if you haven't got an IR camera.
What psu, because I try some for this technic and psu goes to protec mode...
He Vince (nice vid as always)...
In our language we call that part (28:00) "kurvitko" (which has nothing to do with w*ores, the best YT friendly translation would be "fail generator") which means it's a part that's designed to make a device fail after certain amount of time - which is most likely few days after warranty expires. And the more hidden or silly the better. It exist only so the customer have to buy a new product every set of time instead of having a device that lasts 10+ years.
It's called "Planned obsolescence" , it's a common "feature" for productors of many electronic devices. Apple and Samsung were already been fined here in Italy for that same "feature".
there have been 9 firmware updates since that one was last updated www.xtremeps3.com/firmware-history/ just in case anyone was wondering. It is impressive to me how many years they have supported the ps3 with stability updates and minor fixes we are looking at 13 and a half years at this point.
Even it's gone old as a videogame player, it's still very fine Blu-Ray movie player, so perhaps that's why the console is still being updated.
That list is incomplete. It's missing a lot of firmwares. Here's a complete list:

Vince: What's going on?
Crow outside: Kaw KAAAW 😁
The Dualshock 3 controllers require an intelligent host to charge. They will not charge from a typical USB phone charger. They will charge from a PC, and other 'intelligent' devices but the data send and data receive pins on the cable must be present. I think I may have mentioned this in the past.
I get around the 'charging cable' vs 'data cable' by only having data cables :)
Not one of the 30 or so USB cables I have is a 'charging only' cable.
Funny thing is, prior to you saying there was a difference, I didn't even realise there was 2 cables, i'm still not convinced (at least here in Australia) that there is 2 separated ones.
I have a draw which i keep all my "good" cables in
In that draw, i currently have:
3 USB A to Micro B Cables
2 USB A to Mini B Cables
3 USB A to Lightning Cables
(i dont have any cables with a USB type C connector at the moment)
I did at one point have a few "power only" cables, but those sorts of cables get labled as "defective" just so i dont get confused
and i also have 2 cables which i used to class as "good" cables but they now wear a "defective" label
That wi-fi chip also has a bluetooth antenna, if you look at the board theres 2 antenna slots, one for connecting an external wifi antenna and another for an external bluetooth antenna...
by the way vince, if you read this again by any chance, then there's a No Wi-Fi/No Bluetooth Jailbreak firmware out for the PS3 if you want to install it now, check it out here www.psx-place.com/threads/modified-rebug-4-86-1-lite-for-broken-ps3-nobt-nobd-rsod.28922/
nice video vince and the slim is my favourite ps3
Just a brilliant fix
The WiFi and Bluetooth are integrated into the same module. I believe the controller does not sync up when wireless because Bluetooth isn't working. Pretty sure it would work once the module along with those faulty components are replaced. :)
The wifi chip usually does the Bluetooth as well. The wireless controller either uses wifi or Bluetooth so either way you would need a new chip.
price of wifi card and replacment IC is same or less than price of magic ns adapter. Just saying...
The WiFi card ic would take very long to arrive , and there's still a chance that it could just get fried instantly still, as well as the fact the WiFi card uses a ball grid array which is very hard to replace correctly. Just saying...
@@televisionandcheese it's BGA but very wide spread one, easy to replace. You can see it in old Vince video.
Is time to arrive factor in so old console repair....maybe. But one can probably emulate all his PS3 games on PC used to google for repair solution in a meantime :D
Yea but it looks ugly and anyways the console should be able to play online games which is a big deal
Hi Vince, yes, usually wifi and bluetooth are done in the same module, since they are the same frequency, they can have a single chip for both, and same antena
Watch a MyMate Vince video or finish Xenoblad Chronicles? Hmmm... yeah, I'll stick the game on pause and start watching :) Looking forward to finding out what the problem with this one is.
I kinda liked the multimeter beeps. Please unmuffle it! :)
Love your videos and I have been a subscriber for awhile. I'm probably in the minority on this, but I would prefer a more edited shorter video. 25 minutes at the longest. Just some feedback. Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way. I'll still watch none the less.
Thanks a lot!!!!!!
i fixed my console because of you!!!
huge thanks
I downloaded a lot of game patches on my PS3 when they threatened to pull the store, then my controllers stopped working wirelessly, then the PS3 died completely with no power LED. Replaced the PSU with no improvement.
It was the wireless and bluetooth stuff!! All makes sense now. Great vid and comment section.
I didn't have a heat gun and did a hack job desoldering these components but it worked!! Took the wifi card short off the power supply load and PS3 resumed working! This video is only place I've seen this issue discussed and it rescued my favorite console! Thanks!!
How did u do it. I got a ps3 slim 2004b. Can u help me. I will just play offline games.
it would be amazing to see the wifi card fixed but is a vga chip and thats harder than a normal chip unfortunatelly... I am looking forward to see a revisit video when you have a joblot of ps3 slims :)
Glad to see the past experience made it a lot easier to troubleshoot. Great Vid! Keep it up!
Also;
If you have a spare hard drive and want to test the updating, you could probably use the ps3's backup utility to basically clone this current hard drive so that in case the update fails, you can still have the ps3 working as it is currently.
As a precaution, you could also test if the back up works on the new "cloned" drive before doing anything else.
Note; Not sure if this will work as if the ps3 is like the ps4, where the firmware is more hardware level, doing this may cause you to get stuck in that update loop even with the "clone" drive
I must say, that new intro music suits you down to the ground. I'm half presuming you took my advice on using a different editing software? Movie Maker is no good for anything anymore.
I'd happily play games on that bad boy and....you know, hack it up a bit :D
This was a great video though, I really like it when you can just take something and work around the problem like that.
That said, wouldn't you be able to get the software up and running on a good ps3 slim and then swap the hard drive into the one that can't update?
Hello Vince, I know this is old video but, i want to tell you that you dont need to change whole wifi bt module, actualy you can replace only marvel chip and voltage regulator, marvel chip on cech 30xx is same as cech25xx model of ps3. So if you have one broken 25xx console you can swap marvel chip from that console to 30xx. Sorry if my english is bad. Wish you the best, i enyoy your videos... Cheers mate 🙂
TNX BRO YOU GIVE ME A BIG HELPS
Love this vid keep up the good work
Sadly the CECH-3000 models can't be fully hacked and I am not sure if HEN actually checks for missing components (I have not really looked into that, because I have two fully hackable slims). For the earlier models (2000, 2500) there is a custom firmware that works for consoles with missing drives, might work for consoles with other missing parts too.
Fascinating Video
Woo another vid👍
The power supply appears to have a protection circuit which samples the current draw when it is powered and switches the power supply off when it see's an over current. This happens faster than your meter can detect. When you power it with the power supply disconnected it doesn't see an over current and switches the power supply on. You still have the voltage when you connect it since its already done its check and switched the power supply on. Sometimes if you unplug and plug the mains fast enough the power supply hasn't discharged and therefore remains in the state that it was in before you unplugged.
Hi vince hope your good mate loved your video but i just want to say if your having trouble updateing your ps3 via wifi you can update your ps3 in safe mode via a usb by downloading a ps3.update file and install it this will then update it to the latest version meaning you can use ethernet :D
You should wear rubber gloves while testing 240v atleast, just for your safety 😃
would be really cool to see you put an item togther from buying all part seperatly "ish" would be cool to see how the prices differst to from puting it together or when buying it as an finised item
There is a short on the board tripping the protection of the PSU. That is all it is. If the PSU didnt shut its self down as a safety precaution then there is a risk of a fire. Think of it like a circuit breaker. Same idea as what is going on in the PSU when a short occurs.
Nothing magical about the PSU that causes a shutdown. There exists a well-known component that prevents the board from carrying an unwanted short or high current: a fuse.
@@DaMu24 Unless it's an Apple product, those fuses never blow.
That was fascinating. I wonder is a USB combo WiFi/ Bluetooth USB adapter would work? I got three for $20 on ebay and they work great on a PC. A while ago I got a lot of wifi cards for differnt types of devices (12 I think) for about $7, I'll try and match them up on my own PS3 Slim and let you know.
great video👍👍👍wonder if a usb wifi card would work
No, wont work. Once I succed to install a new firmware with a old Bluetooth usb module v1.2 (under 4.60, I dont really remember) but it wont work for new firmware, sadly...
Now you'll need to fix the one from 2 years ago and this one since they have the exact same issue :) Lucky me... I'm still waiting for a positive fix on this type of issue :D
i have similar issue, i have a short in the stand by line, 5 V, I have it in the power supply but not when I connect all, how can i know if it is the memory wifi or regulator Mitsumi 463A?
If you have another PS3 just take the hard drive and put it inside that one, then just update it from that way, once it’s done just put it back into that console. It would work and it doesn’t update much so you won’t have to do it often :)
hi vince i have a ps3 slim CECH-2508A which starts for few minutes and shuts off by itself with no red lights. when i touch the power button it shows the red light on first touch and 2nd touch starts the system for few minutes and shuts off again. can u please suggest any fix regarding this issue.
Hello, greetings from Bulgaria, Vince I have super slim model and when i click the power button it beeps once and the green light comes then turns everything off, if i press the power button again it comes red light. No startup, no nothing...What to do?
I think I’m having this same issue. I might give it the same treatment you did. I’m wondering if I can get away with updating the software by borrowing another fully working PS3 and using my own boot drive to update, then swapping it back in to the mangled one.
I've done that repair and replacement of the parts but WiFi and remote control not working now.. did you have the same issue ? What's the solution?
I broke my board attempting a delid, the only replacements I can find online are ones that have no power like this PS3 did. Are the odds quite high that they've got this same fault? I don't use wifi so I'd be fine with removing a couple SMDs as a permanent "fix" lol. Or I could donate the wifi parts from my previously working board.
Thanks! 🙏🏻
I have a problem it stay off when i turn it on it schut off
Hey Vince hope you are doing okay I think that CZcams algorithm is killing your channel because look at the views and subscriber....
I believe that you should put more 10min video according to the new youtube strategy algorithm .....
Hope you will find this interresting.
Love u..
If you have another fully working machine, can you put the HDD into that one and do the update there?
To make it fast it looks to be a short in the motherboard you could inject some volatge on that 5 v or 3v pin and see what is getting hot
I have one that has this exact issue I'm assuming if it's not something else messing with the light not being on (already put working PSU in it
No joke I have this exact model Vince and I am currently trying a fix I have just got a cheap multimeter I may have to check this but mine turns on and then straight off but may be related to WiFi card also for sure not YLOD that’s a fact
Bad gpu
Momfie The hunter 100% not man already done a reflow to see if this was the case same situation I’ve had this on another unit also which turned out to be a bad capacitor amongst the power rail I’ll keep digging that’s for sure 👍
GM Kof hard I have the same with my PS3 red light comes for a few seconds then goes out. Forcing the fan to come on is the same will power on for a few seconds then shuts down. I tried another psu with higher current rating and that seems to work. Put the old psu in the other PS3 and it works ok. Will have to check around the wifi chip and see if it's shorting
I update my ps3 with usb stick I dont remember but maybe it will wipe your harddisk also maybe your controller is third party and this is the reason why it is not syncing I have a Phat version to update the firmware get your console to safe mode with usb stick loaded with update file then you can update hope it will help I love seeing fixes from you keep them coming please also still curios about that ps2 you try to fix recently
CD player should I be able to see laser light on when power on . Cd table turns but no sound . Any idea and is it a easy fix cheers
How much does that ribbon cable cost? I broke mine when i was cleaning the ps3.
How about adding and external circuit to supply the wifi card?
dc to dc converter they are small, easy and cheap enough
just update the hard drive in a different playstation 3
Nope this will not work
I got a ps3 slim that is having the same issue. Do you do repairs for viewers?
PlayStation 3 CECH-2504B playing games but controller and wifi not working LOL. I can play games connected to USB and with ethernet! I'm tring for a solution too!
Nice work!
It's wifi bluetooth module so no controller if no wifi too!!
What type of liquid was used to remove the components before heating them with a heat gun?
