      @@goff256 Definitely. Muppets have been around accruing fans since the 70s so even if they don't have a massive audience like the princess movies or the Marvel stuff, they do have a fanbase (some _way_ more passionate than others). Anime fandom, while it is a large market, is inherently fragmented, since not everybody likes the exact same shows. The only fanbase for any given new seasonal anime are the fans of its manga or light novels and then just a prayer that more people check the show out.

      In some international markets all of the Fox related content is in a separate streaming service called Star+, and while they're going to combine both services in June of this year, I actually find it very frustrating the fact that they don't market anime very well here in Latin America, a region where anime has always been popular. Bleach, Black Rock Shooter: Dawnfall, Summer Time Rendering, Tokyo Revengers S2, Heavenly Delusion and Unded Unluck are the only "Disney+/Star+ Original" anime that actually got dubbed, and for some titles like Undead Unluck the dub wasn't added until much later, which is weird considering that Netflix uploads all of their "original" anime with a dub on day one.

    It hurt me on a spiritual level that Disney got Undead Unluck. No advertisement. Likely little to no chance of a physical version. I'm pretty sure Disney doesn't acknowledge the anime on the platform because it A.) Has content they'd rather not associate with on a general scale. and B.) Likely they only acquired it has a half measure to attract people to D+ without actually putting in the effort. Plus now other streamers don't have access to it.
    It's like the whole issue with non-competes and IP farming. Plenty of companies acquire authors, artists, titles, squander it, only to not put any effort in and now they've ensured that other competitors are deprived of talent, at the expense of everyone and everything they exploit.

      Yeah, so long as these distributors are willing to continue picking up and subbing their anime. Widely available quality subs devastated the fansubbing community, moreso when Netflix started to do their job so the fansubbers lost that niche too. Blue Archive takes days to get its subs fixed cuz whatever official English ones it has are unwatchable garbage, and Girls Band Cry didn't get good subs for its first episode almost until the THIRD episode aired. And it's still a week behind.
      If this starts to happen more fansubbers will eventually pick up the slack but we're all going to suffer, as will the anime being neglected, for a while until they get their feet back under them.

      Here in Latin America things were very difficult as well, with all of Latin America being a huge region composed from different countries, sometimes some shows were more difficult to access than in others, though one thing we had in common is that there weren't a lot of official anime releases in home video, if you wanted to watch anime legally it had to be shown on television, and the dubbing quality could vary a lot depending in which country it was recorded with Mexico being the place where the best dubs were made, followed by Venezuela, then Chile, Los Ángeles and Argentina, Colombia and Miami made the worst anime dubs though. Nowadays, stremaing has made things much easier and more anime have been dubbed than ever before, though the quality still varies
      The one thing that also affected us in Latin America were the licenses, Funimation, for example, used to blocked tons of licenses, but nowadays it's HiDive the one who blocks all the anime they acquired. At least now we even have our own anime distribution/dubbing companies, like Anime Onegai

      Something kind of similar happened in Latin America, when Disney began streaming Bleach on Hulu some people discovered that the it also included separate audio tracks and that was a big deal for us in Spanish-speaking America since Bleach's dub stopped around episode 229 back in 2015, but when it was added to Disney Viz finally dubbed all of the remaining episodes, though not all of the original voice actors came back due to the series being dubbed in another studio, with Uryū and Chad being the most prominent from the main cast. Though I cannot blame Disney for it, that was more Viz Media's fault since Bleach's LA Spanish dub was based on the English version, though for TYBW they swtched to use the original Japanese version as a base.
      Incidentally, just on the 5th of last month all of the Bleach's movies were finally dubbed into Neutral Spanish and added to Apple TV of all places, though it seems the dub was already done a long time ago since Renji's original VA is present in those movies but he sadly passed away on December of last year.

    Outside the awful lack of marketing, I'm honestly kinda glad Disney+ got Bleach and TYBW. The original series' English dub was never really available here in the UK outside of one TV channel in 2007, so Disney getting it on their platform really was such a huge help since the physical boxsets have been out of print for years now.
    Also, TYBW has no censorship at all on Disney, whereas if it were to go somewhere like Crunchyroll it'd probably have to put those dark shadows on half the scenes.
    I think overall it being on D+ is a positive, but yeah, MAN do they do an awful job of "marketing" it. Thank gosh Viz Media promotes it like crazy at least, I just wish Disney would do it too, and it's silly that they don't- especially when other shows like Star Wars Visions and X-Men '97 did so well.

      I know this might sound crazy, but I find positive the fact that Tokyo Revengers is now on Disney+ because they actually improved the voice direction for the Latin American Spanish dub, the first season dub made by Crunchyroll was directed by Héctor Ireta de Alba, who voices Naoto in the series itself, and while he's a good VA he is not very good at voice direction, Tokyo Revenger's S1 Spanish dub had a lot of issues. When the second season arrived on Disney the voice direction was done by Marc Winslow, who also voices Hajime in the show, and he corrected a lot of things and since they also changed recording studios they replaced some of the VAs, but all of the main characters remain the same, but now they sound better. Sadly, they haven't been any news about the dub for season 3

      maybe i shouldve phrased this better to specify that i was probably inferring, but imo when several VAs are left shrugging, it doesnt feel like that huge a reach to come to the conclusion that the company, at the very least, just doesnt care.

    Watching anime legally is such a chore with region lock and DRM that it's literally easier and simpler to just pirate. This is what companies don't understand. I can't even watch anything on CR anymore because of DRM.
    Also, the fact Band Girls Cry wasn't picked up by any streaming service is a crime.

    Jesus CHRIST, those AI subs are real???
    I feel like we're moving back in a direction where the best way to watch anime as a western fan is the otaku underground - at least the subs are written by humans, and you can *actually watch the shows* instead of having them pulled from the only legal platform with no warning.

    • @mothersbasement
      @mothersbasement  Před měsícem +41

      Unfortunately a lot of “fan subs” are just ripped from legal sites. If you go to watch that show (The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons) on most “underground” streamers it still has the AI subs on it, while CR fixed them after people complained

      @mothersbasement It's depressing to think that their takeaway almost certainly won't be "oh shit maybe we should have professional human translators do this job that fundamentally involves human communication" and will almost certainly be closer to "Well the AI models will improve over time, and until then it's cheaper to bring someone in to fix the occasional flub that people care enough to actually complain about"

      @drudeger Před měsícem

      @@mothersbasementyup, this is unfortunately very true. to me this is likely due to a combination of piracy not actually being all that lucrative, the difficulty of constantly keeping all of the new anime updated and "simulcast," as well as apathy from the people running these sites.
      right now, real grassroots fansubs are only seen in communities of incredibly dedicated fans for anime that aren't being officially subbed anywhere else.
      not to beyblade in the comments, but as an example, the current season of beyblade (beyblade x) is being subbed exclusively by coordinated groups of fans, and you'll see custom credits in the op naming the participants of this group. it's exciting for a fan like me, but there are countless other anime in a similar boat that don't have these kinds of communities with the time or resources to be able to do these kinds of things, and that's really tragic to me.
      and honestly, it's anime like those that I have a strong suspicion are most likely to be given the ai subs treatment by crunchyroll.
      regardless, it's a shit situation that's not going to be fixed exclusively through piracy. there's way more that has to be done for such widespread and systemic issues within the industry to be fixed.
