How did the Scorpions cover of this song escape me for so many years? I loved the Gloria Jones original and the Soft Cell cover and I'm a fan of the Scorpions as well. And holy shit did they knock this one out of the park! Best "rock" cover of the song I've ever heard.

Well I still believe the Soft Cell version is the best. And honestly, that's the version everybody is covering. But next to them, of all the many covers I've heard, leave it to the Scorpions to knock it out of the park with an aggressive but polished effort.
I've said this in many other comments, but the Scorpions has always suffered an embarrassment of riches when it comes to guitar talent, and Matthias Jabs and Rudolf Schenker are two of the best in the business. I love the difference in play styles. Jabs plays with a flair that looks like he could be performing flamenco guitar. Rudolf Schenker, on the other hand, looks like a soldier with a rifle doing bayonet drills. Rudolf Schenker is my favorite rhythm guitarist of all time. Though I confess that now that he's wearing his hair short I have a hard time telling him apart from his brother Michael, a fellow guitar prodigy.
I discovered the Scorpions in 1980 through their Animal Magnetism album, which is still my favorite album of theirs to date. I'm happy that they still sound so good, as they're one rock group of the 70s and 80s that I never got to see perform live when I was going to concerts back in the 80s. I saw Judas Priest twice, Iron Maiden, Rush (twice), and many others. I even saw KISS in 1996. But never the Scorpions. If they ever come close enough to me though you can bet I'm going to carry my old ass there and finally see them perform. Unlike many groups of that era which are now mostly performing as nostalgia acts that are a sad shadow of what they used to be, the Scorpions are still at full-throttle and breaking new ground. Name another group full of old geezers who have managed to achieve that.
No? I didn't think so. I'm one old geezer who still thinks they're the absolute real thing. But you definitely don't have to take my word for it. Just watch some of their recent concert videos. They're so dynamic they make Metallica look like a bunch of old folks in wheelchairs at a retirement home.
