It's amazing to think that barely 4 months had passed between Ian's suicide and this gig. They grieved, composed new songs, tried to figure out the lyrics to Ceremony and rehearsed long enough to be able to get their act together as New Order and go to America (as planned 4 months before!) to play this strange mix of old/new sounds to a crowd that was probably expecting Joy Division songs thrown in between.
The rehearsal versions recorded by Joy Division sound like this too, much “heavier” sounding than the New Order b-side. I don’t really know how to describe it, but somehow the synth sounds more grating on this version, whereas it sounds dreamy and atmospheric on the studio version.
Love the sound of that Arp Omni 2 just about staying in tune through the songs and the Hohner melodica Ian use to own (got a green soprano model for my eighth birthday)
As you say lns, it is amazing that this "lot" became what we knew even in '83 as NO. Nevermind the assuredness of Technique. Bloody hell. Ceremony is so delicate too, beautiful.
This is great, thanks for posting. Love the different versions of these songs. Dreams Never End and Ceremony are two of my all-time favorites (along with Sunrise).
Yes, I would have listen to it on my bed, at the end of a sunny spring afternoon, instead of doing my home-works, and it would have filled my youth. Ending by Ceremony, maybe I would have forget where I was, when it was, maybe I would have weighted nothing.
I've always been fascinated about the existence of this first US tour. I'm deeply appreciative of this upload. And I'm a huge New order fan but from one N.O fan to another, this is a bit of a mess. I just finally heard the first Chicago appearance in 1983, it's on CZcams and it's a tremendous evolution from this. I mean this criticism with the utmost respect. I love everything about New Order, except maybe for the fact that Hooky is not in it anymore.
Fantastic! Excellent snapshot of a very brief transition period. The second track is so undeveloped. Sounds more like Tunnelvision or a Section 25 demo.
Sam Wulfekotter me too but I think he said they all sucked at singing and playing at the same time, and it was more natural to have the guitar come in and out alternating with the vocals ( which they’d already been doing anyway). It wouldn’t have worked as well to do that with the bass, the bass and drums need to keep driving the song.
It was especially galling when I saw the Technique tour and Bernard couldn't even remember the lyrics to his own songs. It was the last time I bothered to pay to see them live.
This is just a personal opinion but right off the first verse it’s interesting that I think Bernard felt pressured to try and sound like Ian. I don’t know if he fully felt confident in himself or what the three were continuing to do at that point, RIP Ian you are loved and missed everyday.
It must have been odd seeing them at this stage, as they were starting again like a completely new group - Seeing what worked and what didn't with a crowd wanting to hear some J.D material no doubt!
It would be interesting to see the vocal credits on this. Drum machine on Procession suggests Steve on that one. Very early versions of the songs. Never even knew of the existence of the unreleased track. Possibly never even made it to a recording. If it did, then it's a shame it wasn't included on the Movement 2 disc set.
Vocals credit : Bernard : In A Lonely Place Hooky : Cries and Whispers, Hour, Mesh, Dreams Never Ends, Ceremony (backing) Stephen : Procession, Truth, Ceremony
I love Stephen and New Order is my favorite band without question, but damn what a terrible voice! I'm glad he just stuck with drumming. And later keyboards as well.
Yeah, poor Steve is taking much hits on his vocals (especially on Procession) - but in fairness - "Procession " was new and the vocal melody was not established to follow clearly. For a beginner singer - this is not easy to just pull off as w/o a guide vocal melody line - good luck improvising live and sounding decent. "Truth" comes off well - as Steve had the most practice clearly on that one. For "Ceremony" - if Steve did not have to manage the monumental task for keeping that beat - he would have done better like the demo. But playing that live and singing without screwing up the pace or a missing a beat - hats off to him! I'd actually like to see of Phil Collins or Don Henley could sing and play "Ceremony" live without sacrificing something in performance. Shame Ian could not have made this trip as he would have loved it and maybe got him out of his whirlpool that was taking him down at the time.
Was Hooky singing a lot of the songs (Ceremony in particular)? I like what he did on Movement, but it's really a good idea he didn't end up the front man. Of course Barney couldn't sing much at the start either :)
Two misconceptions in the comments below 1/ The lads actually got over Ian's death a lot faster than you are all imagining. The interviews lay bare to this that after a few weeks it was all about survival 2/ The lads had bills to pay and reputation to keep so they had little choice but to go to America which Ian was dreading going to. He despised everything America stood for. Atrocity Exhibition.
@@pPpPancakes That's not much of a surprise considering the CD was entirely studio recordings and the DVD was entirely live recordings, this recording doesn't really fit into either camp
@@georgejpg The Movement definitive edition boxset includes rehearsal recordings as well though, There is a rehearsal recording of Hour that could have gone on the definitive edition but was left off.
New Order isn't Bernard or Stephen, it's just about stepping up and creating a new order out of loss, an impossibility if it weren't for every member of the band coming together and creating something raw, kewl, and only what they, working through the sh!t together, could have created. Really take off those filters and listen to it, really listen to it. If you don't get it, sorry, glad we do.
Top shelf shit. Brain stimulating and orgasmic. Talking about brain, they screwed mine. I went sideways. But cannot blame them for it. It was my choice.
Track 3 on Substance ("Mesh") is actually 'Cries & Whispers" mislabelled. As far as I'm aware, 'Mesh' itself was only released as a B-side (to 'Everything's Gone Green'?), and does sound similar to this recording.
I found it online years ago, on some blog. Still have the mp3. It's mostly drums and vocals only. Stephen drums and sings the lyrics off key and says "Can we have the next bit on the bass guitar?" and then Hook plays in the background, along with some synth. After a while, Stephen says "And there we have the other bass bit again" and continues singing. And then the song stops.

Who's The Decriber giz?
The roughness of this version of Cries and Whispers is extraordinary.
Listening to Movement, or any other footage of early New Order is heartbreaking. I'm pretty sure they were very heartbroken and confused back then.
Movement is zenith sound rediosssss🕶️💪💪💪💪💪💪
Singing is hellish, but if your lead singer and mate has just killed himself 4 months earlier, what balls to carry on. Brilliant.
Never heard such a intense new order version of 'In a lonely place' like this one before. Thanks so much for posting this and all the other songs.

When I listen to Hours I hear Digital - "don't ever fade away, I need you here today" and a similar beat.
Julie, I think decades is the link between joy division and new order
This is the transition, thanks for posting x

Funny how Hooky and Steve do the bulk of the singing in this yet Barney became the vocalist.

Is that the tape fucking up on Ceremony or did they just invent auto tune and not tell anyone?
Amazing post!! Thank you very much!
Strange to see a NO show where Barney sings on ONE song.
Wow, Hooky does a good singing impression of Ian
Wow!!! That was pretty brutal! It’s amazing how quickly they turned things around and eventually became a great live band.
This is fucking fantastic!!!

As a singer Stephen is the best drummed in Manchester....Seriously time def.
You can really hear the potential in Procession but it’s a bit of a wreak at this time
This is amazing, so raw and genuinly heartrending. Rather than just trying to copy Ian, it feels like they’re actually channelling his spirit.
Alright am i in the fucking beach club?
Interesting to listen to both Peter and Stephen attempting to imitate Ian's vocal style.
Now, THIS is a New Order I could get on board with. So much better than what came after 1982/3.
true new order paul.
Paul Metzger with the exception of Technique, post '87 New Order is just tosh
true, but at least republic had a reason to exist (ie an attempt to save factory records)
Sounds like Joy Division straight up, Stephens voice is eerie
