  • This is the engine teardown on a 2002 Rancher 350. This is a 2wd electric shift model and is pretty much the same process as the manual shift and 4wd model with exception to a couple differences in the front cover.

    Hi Doc I have a 2001 Honda 350ES that shifts perfect most of the time. Sometimes it won’t shift electronically and will be hard to shift with emergency shifter. Thinking it could be change clutch sticking somehow. The guy I bought it from used it for plowing snow and used ordinary motor oil. If you have ever seen this condition a reply would be greatly appreciated.

    Dumb question... On the front cover, is there not a gasket? I opened mine up to check the clutch cause I overfilled it by about a quart and it was slipping crazy. I'm hoping i just clean everything and put it back and i'll be back in business. But just seemed like it didn't have a gasket. I can't find one on the parts diagrams.

    hey ive got a question. i just rebuilt my 350 engine and have zero oil getting to the top end. it has oil pressure when i pull the opposite side of the oil cooler it shoots out like crazy. is there another seal or transfer dowel from that point that leads to the top end. im gonna pull the engine back out and pull the front cover and check there but if it has that much pressure on the exit side of the cooler i cant see there being an issue there.

    • @FourwheelerDoctor
      @FourwheelerDoctor  Před rokem

      Yes there are two towels in there at the oil pump. Also make sure your oil filter is installed correctly with the hole facing outward. The OEM filters will not go in backwards but some aftermarket ones Will.

    • @buildurtruckurway9118
      @buildurtruckurway9118 Před rokem +1

      @@FourwheelerDoctor well i stripped it back down and both dowels were in place. i found the oil passage to the top end leads thru the top of the front center case. honda should have put a dowel there instead of relying on some case seal to hold the pressure. but the port leads to the front side crank bearing in the front cover its right beside one of the top case bolts. if you ever tear another one down on camera you should point that out, its an often overlooked part of the 350 engine. if it doesnt seal properly it doesnt allow oil to get to the top end or the outer crank bearing that supports the clutch. i was tempted to drill the cases for a dowel and oring in that port.
      also theres a little 8mm bolt on the valve cover that allows people to check for oil flow/pressure. i hooked up a fitting and got between 5-10psi psi in the valve cover at idle. i know ive been asked 100 times how to check the oil flow up top and thats the best spot i could find to check for pressure and flow.
      im sure you've dealt with this crap too as another atv mechanic so if i can pass on what i learned it should be on the most watched honda 350 engine rebuild series.

      @@buildurtruckurway9118 I can't say I've ever had trouble with it sealing up on the front cover but that's interesting and thanks for the information. It does look like they would have put a dowel there too.

    Hey Doc Need to pick your brain, I have a 04 rancher ES in the shop , it will only shift to 1st and back to neutral, back and forth no problem , If i pull the shift motor i can man, shift all gears up and down soon as i put the shift motor back on the resistance of the motor wont let the shift plate reset for the next gear shift , ;;;; Bad shift motor or weak return spring maybe?,Thoughts... i pull the shift motor and cleaned and regreased , when i shift it manually it feels like the shift plate return spring has plenty of tension , Was hoping you has ran into this over the years and could shorten my search , Thanks for any help and all your videos have helped alot , Thank you

      You have to use gaskets on these bikes for clearance. Often times I do use RTV with these gaskets to help them seal up. The only place you can not use RTV on these bikes is the base gasket under the cylinder. If use RTV on it the pressure from the cylinder head will break the gasket.
