I think the common thread throughout all of her masterclasses is how much Joyce works with subtext. She sketches a real-life situation throughout the aria, and it's most evident in her work on Caro Nome here. It makes it real for audience and singer alike, and I think it's something we need to work with as much as possible as artists... it gives us the ever allusive 'interpretation' that no one can ever really explain.

As a singer, I enjoy every one of your masterclasses, Joyce. I learn things every single time I watch them. Such a collection of different talents, as well. Thank you so much ❤

This Masterclass was recommended by a friend. As a person with limited opera experience, I had no idea what to expect, but open-mindedness brought me to the click. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised. More than anything, this demonstrates the potential for a gifted coach/instructor to convey their passion for an art form and transmit that to their students so they can more skillfully and passionately carry that message to others. With much respect and admiration, I say BRAVA to Joyce and BRAVI to the artists she so lovingly connected with in this class. ❤🎼 I'm hooked. 😊

    “Words are my instrument.” 1:53:12
Love this because listening to singing, I often feel like either I’m hearing the ‘voice’ (or the sound), but not the words, or I’m hearing the words but not the ‘voice.’ If words are also a singer’s instrument, then the sound and words become one to make music! And interestingly enough, when they are one, I enjoy the music even without full understanding of the the texts themselves. Just from the different colors that words/voice create, I hear meaning of the text.

Sorry to point out that in the Haendel aria the text is "si beva" (Let one drink: impersonal exhortation), not "Sì beva" (yes, one drinks), which would not make any sense.

Interestingly, two days in a row she's decided not to work on a singer/aria. I sort of get why, but as a viewer I feel robbed of an experience (beyond the delight of a beautifully performed piece), we too are interested in the process! Luckily, as I understand, there's a lot more "behind the scenes" collaboration in these days for the singers so they don't feel as left out!
Nonetheless, these classes are always really enriching to watch (and listen!), thank you!

After over 3 decades of operatic career she never saw The Rake‘s Progress and doesn’t know the music - wow. Impressive

Hi, Stella. 25 years of career, just to be clear. And I readily admit there are LOADS of operas I've not seen; LOADS of singers I've not seen; LOADS of repertoire I don't know. Rakes Progress is just one of them. The reason I mentioned it publicly, is that in this case, Travon was much more an expert on this aria than me - and I wanted him to know clearly that I was offering my thoughts as they arrive, not from professional experience. However - that doesn't mean I can't offer insight that will help him grow as an artist, and even in this particular aria. I think where he ended with this aria is a testament to that. Not sure why you felt the need to bring sarcasm to the table for this. If you disagree with specific points I coached him on (color choices, use of word painting, musical integrity, etc) that's cool - but I don't think sarcasm adds much to the discussion here, no? Or maybe I missed the point? I will say his singing of this aria makes me really want to see the full opera - I still have time, luckily.

@@TheYankeediva don't respond to the haters and ignoramuses. You're amazing and above all that. You said yourself you're not an expert on everything, not a "vocal coach," etc. You're helping these students become ARTISTS, not technicians.

I’m in the U.K. and fairly old (😂). Have loved opera for many years and for the past 2 years I’ve been having singing lessons with a mezzo soprano. I absolutely love my lessons with her but Long Covid has knocked me back and I’m not able to get to her at present 😞😢.
I watch your CZcams lessons and enjoy learning from you.
Thank you for sharing your art with us.
      ❤️
