      Just a little addition:
      If you do activate DynEQ then make sure to adjust the levels on your Surrounds, Rears and Top Rears by about -2 to -3db each since DynEQ boosts them too much, at least if your main listening Volume is somewhere between -15 and -25db

    Lol, my wife says that bonus tip is on point!
    Every single time we sit down for a movie she says, "One day. One day maybe we'll be able to sit and watch a movie without you ever having to adjust a setting or have you 'fix' something."
    Haha, she's so right. Even when I'm happy with how smooth things run, there's always SOMETHING I tweak in the first 5 minutes of watching. Whether it's the picture mode on the TV or the audio codec not being pushed to the receiver for some reason. Or maybe the LFE is too much or the dialogue isn't crystal clear. Lol, it's always something.
    Great video though! I've been waiting a year for someone to make a tutorial video on how to use the Audyssey app. Thank you for breaking everything down but in terms that we understand. Have a good one!!

    Hi Joe, today I have run a new Audyseey set for my Denon AVR 1611 pointing out the mic towards the speakers instead of towards the sealing. The result was totally different form the beginning. I have been using this AVR since 2013 and never gets totally satisfied with the results. Bass always was to boomy and now with this small change in the process the bass are more tight and precise. I have always thought about doing this way and as you mentioned this in your video it was bouncing on my head for a while until I tried it out. Thank you for your videos!!

    I recently upgraded from a 2009 Denon to 2017 model, using the Multeq app is brilliant; especially being able to limit Audessey to only eqing the room under 400hz and creating your own curve.

      @@joentell Sure Joe, BTW, I'm using Dirac on a Maestro M5 (bought this from Sparechange)
      With the full correction on, the sound is very smooth, but rolled off. I first thought this was just the sound signature of my Martin Logan Motion speakers (60XT + 50XT). They are actually much brighter when I limit correction to 300hz, and does yield some added top end detail.
      It was somewhat jarring at first but my ears are getting used to it. When I applied full correction again to just the center speaker, the top end wasn't as sparky and crispy. I prefer this since my ears are somewhat sensitive to upper treble. And dialogue was more intelligible and clear. But I noticed it sounded a tad more compressed, though well controlled. Also, the blending wasn't as good with my fronts.
      I plan to limit the curtain to around 700-1khz and see how that sounds, at least for the center. Not sure I'll keep the curtains at 300hz for the fornts, but I think it will stay for the surrounds and atmos channels.
      Pros - more detail, slightly more spacious, natural sound. You can tame bright sounding speakers.
      Cons- can sound unnatural, and compressed. May lose some upper end detail, and crispiness. Can neuter bright sound signature if you prefer that. I hope that helps, Joe.

    Great job. Very good balance between hitting the needed details and being too technical. Interesting that you suggest limiting the filters to 500-700hz. I see a lot of places that say limit it to the Schroder frequency of your room which is around 150-200. I’ll have to try playing with it to see what sounds best.

    Useful video, thanks.
    I found, on my X1400H, that restorer on low gives the best with 128kbps sound streams (MP3 or internet radios). Higher setting might be useful for lower bitrates, but I won't listen to those, and I found with higher settings it makes the bass unnatural and the treble harsh.
    For the ECO mode Denon and Marantz recommends auto setting. That will give the best from both worlds. Unfortunately on the X4500H (if I remember right) ppl experienced distorsion in the midrange with ECO on. When just set to on, I felt the sound of the X1400H strange, but with auto it sounds as good as it gets.
    The ECO trigger is around volume 45, which isn't that loud on speakers with average senitivity. So if you reach that volume setting with ECO auto, the AVR turns it off and you can use the full power of the amps.
    With auto it's only the matter of how well you tolerate the clicks of the solenoid turning on and off the ECO mode. :)

    Thanks. Just a note FYI: the Midrange Compensation has its origins in what is called The BBC Dip. I think it aims to push the soundstage back a bit, for example if your home setup is creating a ‘too-close’ soundstage, or sub-perfect recordings are too aggressive, or if you like classical music and the sound of the orchestra in your room is too close and not natural. Cheers

      @matt88169 Před 4 lety

      Accu-EQ works extremely well because, unlike Audessey, it focuses only on your bass integration up to about 200-500 hz, and doesn't touch the rest (which as audioholics explains is generally sage advice). It will definitely remove bass peaks effectively. A little tweaking helps a lot. My room is also lively - but honestly you need room absorption, not EQ. More drapes, pillows, furniture, etc.
      First of all, you may want it "on" for all channels even if the speakers are not identical - primarily because you want the mains to blend with the subwoofers.
      Second, you may want to check distances though I find those to rarely be off by a lot, if at all.
      Third, experiment with crossovers - I usually end up somewhere around 70hz to 100hz, depending on where the subwoofers are. IMO choosing a crossover point should include listening to music you like with and without a lot of bass. When it sounds powerful and "even", you have probably found the best crossover point for music AND movies. If all your speakers are different, I would recommend taking the time to hook up each pair (or the center) as if it was your main pair of speakers and listening (with subwoofer on) until you find the right crossover point (for example, 90hz for the mains, and 120 hz for the surrounds).
      Forth, levels are typically set in really stupid ways. For one, the subwoofers are usually up way too high. I used a measurement microphone (honestly even an iPhone if I had to), set it to C-weighting, zeroed out the levels in the receiver, and then set everything by CUTTING so my center channel would be +1.5 relative to all other speakers @ 75dB. That's a little "dialog boost" that I have been playing with and may change. After listening to a lot of movies, I needed to drop the surround channels by about 3 dB because they are closer to me and seemed too intrusive. My subs run -6dB and for awhile I actually cut the LFE channel for movies -10dB because things were so intense. For movies sometimes that LFE channel is going to be too damn hot, even if your music seemed spot on.
      Fifth - experiment. My Accu-Eq measures a SINGLE spot in the room (which many poo-poo on). As you saw, Audessey does up to an 8 point average around the primary listening area. If you are lucky enough to have REW and a measurement microphone, you could go right ahead and sweep your mains+subwoofers 8 times in the same relative locations and compare it to a single sweep at the location where you want to run the room correction. I promise you if the "average" looks a lot like your "prime" seat, the room correction result will perform about the same. Or, if you see that the variation is relative nil below 1 Khz moving in 2 foot increments, you don't need to worry too much. In my case the bass response was better at the edge of the couch than "in it", so I tried calibrating the system to that point. For whatever reasons, things are now sounding a bit better overall.

For example John Wick 2 movie in the beginning when the Russian Boss tells John "enjoy your retirement" then the guitar string strikes, before it would be really low, since I ran the EQ app, the guitar strike is natural and bass is good and strong. I think I may agree with your take on dynamic EQ, I am struggling with really low dialogue which if I turn up makes the score and effects in loud parts too loud. And seems to make my surrounds too loud in comparison to my center channel. Gonna redo audyssey with tripod and see how I get on with dynamic EQ off. 🧐 Edit : update just set my systems up properly using the mic with a tripod. Sounded awesome with dynamic EQ on . At -15 dB sounds right. And the effect is lessened as you go up in volume. I went all the way up to reference! My neighbor wasn't in when I did this so was nice to hear what my system is really capable of when set up correctly. I am just going to have to (reluctantly) use dynamic volume when listening late at night!

I’m just trying to sell my existing Denon AVR-X2200, then will be trying desperately to find an ex demo or clearance stock Denon AVR-X4500 receiver like yours, I could go with the newer 3600 or 3700, but I think I’d get more power and as good an amp if not better with the 4500👍🏻 I’m still a bit scared about setting it up as there’s so many settings, a bit daunting! Fingers crossed I can make it sound awesome 🤦‍♂️😆

      Glad it helped. 80hz is about the frequency where you cannot localize bass. It helps to make the bass seem as if it's coming from the speakers, not the sub.

    I just received my 4700h today. Always been a pioneer and onkyo fan boy but made the move as I needed a new amp and denon and marantz are the only amps you can buy in the uk.
    I'm impressed with denons very bright sound and has plenty of grunt. Nice and clear! Still trying to get used to the layout, it seems a little more notchy compared to pioneer, it isn't a fluent and its buttons galore on the remote! I won't use 75% of them.
    As for audyssey and multi eq, hmmm. Not sold. First of all I only did 3 measurements over 2 seats, why an earth audyssey needs to know the location of my feet is beyond me. My feet don't have ears. It then told me to turn my subs to 50%, then on the next screen told me turn all of my subwoofers down again! I had litterally no bass once the set up was finished, it then told me my towers were out of phase and the positives were the wrong way round, this made me second guess my wire connections and yes, behold audyssey was wrong, I thought it might be considering I had no issues with pioneer. so clicked ignore. It then set all my speakers to large. So after calibration I had to basically go in and change everything myself anyway, phase wrong, speaker size wrong, levels were incorrect after using a decibel metre, then had to turn my subs up again. Then when I tried to use the eq app, it refused to send my custom file to the av. I had to restart the amp and my tablet to get it to send.
    Currently have a 2 week cooling off period with the store and can send it back if I cant get on with it. But up until now its done nothing but infuriated me.
    Though audyssey did a very good job with eq and distances, from having to double check because it had got everything else wrong. So far at £1450 I'm not sold at all. How audyssey gets so many great reviews is beyond me.
    Hopefully in the next 2 weeks now its set up and dont have to deal with audyssey we can get along.

    • @joentell

      Audyssey takes the acoustic distance. So your subs might be way off because they have added delay that Audyssey accounts for.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  Před 2 lety +1

      The transition frequency is determined by the room size, the directivity of your speakers, and your listening position. You just have to experiment. I have ways to determine what the range is in your room, but that's beyond the scope of this video.

    This was great Joe.Im trying to transfer these ideas over to my Yamaha 2080 receiver.In Yamaha they have YPAO volume,Adaptive DSP and Adaptive DRC that some reviewers insist should be on for movie watching. @joentell  Před 4 lety +1

      I don't know how these tips translate over. Adaptive DRC sounds like Audyssey Dynamic EQ and YPAO Volume sounds like their version of Dynamic Volume. It's tough to say because their solutions might work better or worse than Audyssey. I can't speak on that. Adaptive DSP sounds like it varies the total amount of DSP based on volume. Kind of interesting.

    Hi Joe! Great video!! Have you found great loudness difference between turning on MultEQ and/or Dynamic volume against using manual Eq or pure direct? In my case I do have a Denon AVR1611, a 5.1 entry level unit from 2010, and the difference is such big that doing manual Eq or pure direct does not make sense at all. I have bought the unit second hand, so maybe there is something wrong with it. I would really appreciate your comments..also from other followers of this channel in order to find out more people with the same issue. Thanks

    • @TysonHook-22-
      @TysonHook-22- Před 3 lety +2

      Pure direct is a 2ch stereo direct mode that cuts off the sub(s) and all other unused channels and various things within the receiver to give the purest most direct and uninterfered source playback... its essentially an audiophile music mode tends to be vary flat and dull imo
      MultiEQ: Reference or Flat should be on if you have done Audyessy setup and want its EQ corrections to be applied, many tend to prefer flat over reference but experiment and see what you like best for yourself.
      Dynamic EQ - tends to do more harm then good, most recommend to leave it off, it ruins the natural mix that the engineers created and applies EQ where it sees fit to give you a "cinematic home experience"... most find it negatively effects the bass and blows a bunch of the sounds out of proportion and as such is generally considered to be unpleasant... but if you like it, use it!
      Dynamic Volume: is extremely useful and many people run it on "light" for movie/tv playback it will make dialogue much cleaner and clearer to understand, it essentially raises the dialogue up to the front of the mix. for music playback you'll want this off though.
      Theres videos that discuss these things in further depth and online forums can be vary helpful with deciphering the various Audyessy settings... for ex. googling "Audyessy Dynamic EQ on or off forum" you'll get a ton of results of people discussing there experiences with Dynamic EQ and why they either love or hate it.

    Thanks for the great video! I have the Denon AVR-X4700H and ran Audyssey using the remote. What was odd was that Audyssey set the crossover frequencies incorrectly (I think). For example, the mains (Polk L600) were set at 240Hz while the surrounds (Polk L100) were set at 40Hz. This seems backwards. Using the phone app can you manually set the crossovers first and then run the calibration program? In other words, will it complete the process without changing the manually set bass crossover frequencies? Thanks again!

    Great vid -- I've done the Audyssey calibration and it set my speakers all in the range of -6.0 or lower. I find myself having to crank the master volume on the amplifier much higher now to get the punch and presence I want. I just got a decibel meter, and plan on using it to make sure all my speaker volumes are equal (same db level using the meter). Here is my question: what would happen if I boosted all the speaker levels up to say -2.0 or even 0? Will it allow my speakers and amp to work harder and produce more sound, or will it also screw up my Audyssey-imposed room corrections and tweaks I've made using the MultEQ Editor app?

    Fantastic vid, really helped me out. I was wondering though, I did and went to every step from this vid, but now I want to add more bass from my subs. What would you say is the best way to add more bass post calibrations?!
    I've heard that you should never touch the gain knob on the subs itself after room corrections. Since I rather not use Dynamic EQ, I need to significantly boost up the sub trim in the avr. But I also heard you shouldn't go in the +. But even at 0db, I still think it could use more bass. I know the best way is to find another place for the sub or add a sec cod sub, but both aren't achievable atm.
    So, what would you say is the best way to add more bass?!

      Corner loading subs will give you more headroom. The best way would be to increase the bass in the editor app using a custom curve. Apply the curve to all of your speakers to keep the same tonality.

  • @GregorMima
    @GregorMima Před 4 lety +10

    I would remove / limit any front speaker down to 50-80Hz (the THX reference is 80Hz). Why? Sound below 80Hz needs a lot of punch and energy, and pushes any amp/speaker to it limits. Without these frequencies you have all power left for the rest of the spectrum. It will result in a far bigger dynamic range, since you go easier on speaker AND amp. Subs usually can handle - sub - frequnecies better since they "just" need to amp low frequencies. Just my 2 cent.

    Great video! I've been messing with the MultEQ app a lot lately also with the Denon 4500 and my KEF R series (R3 and R2c). A couple of questions... If you're only EQing up to 500hz-700hz; does the High Frequency Roll Off option on the App even matter? I'm thinking that if you're not EQing past 500hz, then it shouldn't matter whether you select Option 1 or Option 2. I could be wrong though. In addition, do you have your Audyssey set to 'Reference' within the Denon for all of your inputs (music and movies?). I used to have it set to Reference for my movie input, and Flat for my music input, but you mentioned that Flat overrides what limit you set the EQ for in the app (500hz)? Is that right? So I'm guessing that I should just set it to Reference for all of my inputs (music and movies?) Thanks for your help!

    • @joentell
      @joentell  Před 4 lety +1

      I used to have it set like you said with Reference for movies and Flat for music, but after doing some measurements and seeing that flat just bypasses the limited filtering I set to 700hz, I just use reference for everything now. I figure it it's good for music, it should be good for movies too.
      You're right about what you think should happen with regards to roll off option 1 & 2, but if I'm remembering correctly, it still has an effect on the top end extension. You would expect that if you set a limit, that would mean don't allow any DSP correction at all past that point, but I think it only applies to not allowing the custom curve to affect anything past that point.
      I will have to test it later, but I think even leaving midrange compensation on will affect 2khz with the limit set. It might be a problem with their program logic, but maybe something I can talk to their engineers about.
