this is incredible. I haven't heard this story in probably 25-30 years, but I remember the images from the book. I remember the monkeys, and trying to count all the different colored hats. It truly blows my mind how we can hold on to these memories for decades and a single image can bring it all back.

This book reminds me of me of my childhood. Most importantly, this reminds me of my mom. I miss you Birdie. Thank you for being the best mom ever!!! I miss you.
I only remembered the fact that the guy walked around with a stack of hats on his head. Not images. Not monkeys. Not the plot. Not the specific style of hat. Just the stack of caps.
In Kindergarten, we had to dress up as a literary character from a book we've read. So I got to show up to class with a bunch of hats stapled onto one another.
Dude I’m 24 years old, I used to own this book when I was little and read it a million times. I am now here reading(listening) to it years later once more. Somethings don’t change :) In a time before I had to worry about what people thought of me, before I had to pay bills good times
In the book the monkeys say something like "tsss tsss tsss!" One of my favorite childhood memories is my mom trying to read this part to me. So...I'm not into the ad libbed dialog, which I think robs the book of some of its charm. But for the rest, and for putting the illustrations up, thank you!
Man, it's been AGES since I last read this book! I can remember my library teacher read us this book all the time and I just LOVED the art style and the overall story. Thanks for sharing my childhood :)
I’m so confused bc I vividly remember him saying a little rhyme “Caps for sale, for a dollar! Caps for sale, any colour! Red and yellow, blue and green, finest caps you’ve ever seen!” Lmao I think my gr 1 teacher straight up made up a song for this book
This was one of the first books i owned. Our second grade teacher took our money to buy books. We got a big box a few weeks latter that she opened with our order. She passed out each kids order. I got this one and a book on dolphins. Wow about 57 years ago!
I remember that book being one of the first I learned to read in the mid-late 1980's. The thieving monkeys give me flashbacks of going to a zoo capuchin monkey exhibit with warnings to leave your belongings on the tour bus prior to entering. The monkeys were notorious pickpockets.
I loved this book when I was a child, and loved reading it to my kids. I donated my copy of the book when the kids outgrew it. Now, my Grandson loves this story thanks to you!!!! 😄
I remember this book! I loved this book but I don't remember if it was my mother or father or even grandfather who read it to me. I loved it enough that when my twins were born in 1994 I it to read to their older sister who was 3 years. old. She loved it too. Of course the twins didn't understand it but I think they liked the way I read it and I think it was calming to them. It was also a way to begin to learn colors. I don't have it anymore but I will try to find it again so I can read it to my grandchildren (that I am waiting for). Thanks for sharing this. P.S. It's been over 55 years since someone read this book out loud to me.

How about the mustache. Did you remember the guy had a mustache that rivaled the Pringle's guy's stache?
i remember a few images and the monkeys along with the fact that he fell asleep near the side of the tree.
Lol
The colors were always so satisfying to me
Lol! I remember the book because it was featured on Public Broadcasting Service’s ‘Reading Rainbow’! :D
In Kindergarten, we had to dress up as a literary character from a book we've read. So I got to show up to class with a bunch of hats stapled onto one another.
