  • www.deeranddee... For many of us, our hunting properties aren't right in our backyards, and there isn't always time to travel. Luckily, trees are the gifts that keep on giving and will produce deer food for decades! Iain Wallace of Chestnut Hill Outdoors and Steve Bartylla talk trees in today's episode of Grow 'em Big. I have 7 Chinese chestnut trees that are 17 years old! I bought them from a guy in Iowa! The squirrels and deer devour them!

Deer, turkey, sheep, swine, poultry and other wildlife love Swamp White Oak acorns and Persimmons. See Missouri Agroforestry professor Coggeshall's three part video on the benefits of Swamp White Oak.

They’re good trees...however, if you plant them in areas where Black Bears live, they will destroy them. Additionally, you need to train these trees, by spreading the branches because if they compete with the main stem, they won’t grow. Learned my lesson well. If you can get them to grow and somehow protect them, they’ll work. Other than that, don’t waste your time.

Sometimes listening to an "expert" talk is difficult. They may know their stuff, but they have a hard time conveying that info in a manner that won't make us hit our heads against the wall.
