Hi John, I just listened to Duddy de Franco on Spotify playing with Martin Taylor and I agree, he is a fabulous virtuoso jazz clarinet player with a gorgeous tone. I would like to have even half of his facility on the instrument. But here's the thing, I'd rather listen to someone like Barney Bigard, Pee Wee Russell, or Orange Kellin or Sammy Rimington because they have more 'soul' or something I can't define. What do you think?

Hi Ian, I have heard that some other clarinet players are more soulful than Buddy DeFranco, I know what you mean in particular the magnificent Barney Bigard and his playing with Duke Ellington, and Pee Wee Russell and his rough fun type style. But Buddy has his own soul as we all do. Have you heard the Buddy DeFranco and Art Tatum album? Wizardry in sound! I also enjoy Artie Shaw clarinet playing.
