      BEST STATEMENT EVER!! I can identify non-thinkers by whether they say “we can’t know” or “we will never” etc. These statements are an indication of unconscious, rigid assumptions that are unquestioned because the person is using inquiry UNCONSCIOUSLY to make a “mind niche” in the survival or reward sense and they feel that THIS CONSTRUCT is “reality”. There is ONLY 1% of the population actually capable of self-objective or objective thinking. And among those, there is a much smaller percentage with high enough intelligence to keep fundamental assumptions open to scrutiny in a fluid way-to be truly usefully creative rather than simply divergent. Those who are not creative PROJECT on to these vital minds their own failings, and therefore never listen to the truly objective minds from the get-go. This is obviously the basis of all conflict and ridicule in the history of the advance of knowledge in humanity. It’s a war with the past, and fueled by ignorance and motives from biological necessity.
      I have yet to meet anyone who understands what language is because it is classified wrong. Again, because of our biological history and necessary paths for our development as beings.
      Good lord I loved this discussion!! For me, it’s hard to know what people think because I have had to be alone in order to make real progress for so long. I have to sit by and watch people speaking in circles, not seeing the maze in their own minds and the unproductive turns they keep making. Ironically like the loops in their own programming problems. Loops are useful and purposeful, and also symbolic. That’s the crux.
      I wrote many papers and a couple books on these things over the last 3 decades. We don’t need “crazy ideas”, we don’t need more complexities in our loops of mind, we need to stare down the complexity and dig deep. To more fundamentally simple new foundations.
      I know that we will be successful in general AI, but if you don’t understand what reality IS, you will not think clearly enough to do it.
      There is no one currently on earth who understands these things better than I do. And I don’t mean that in a scholastic “I know the details of what everyone else (erroneously) thought..” sense. I found new natural laws. It is only the thicket of complex voices of “scholarly” people which now obscures real understanding of the necessary new ideas. I used to write to Chomsky and B.F. Skinner back in the 80’s when I was a kid. I have never stopped. If you want to know how to make AI, you have to understand all of reality, not just the mazes that our past evolution has installed in brains that are not able to be objective.
      Sorry to be so offensively blunt, but I love humans and this is important. They are currently incapable of understanding how important.

    Productive language is only found in humans. Abductive reasoning in mathematics would create AGI whereas inductive reasoning is found in deep learning, hence AI has been created. A famous paradigm of abductive reasoning at work is Einstein thinking Newton into Relativity.
    Where does the subconscious/unconscious factor in the picture of conscious abductive reasoning?

      Never is more common in science than people realize, for example, the assumption that we will never get the position and velocity of a particle at the same time with the same precision because this limitation is part of the very nature of the universe.

I intuitively picked up on his intelligence his way of thinking and his beautiful spirit. Yes he indeed is a Beacon of Hope and a breath of fresh air. We all need him so bad right now.     Great video! Have a language hierachy fresh in your mind:
    phonetics (speech sounds), phonology (syllables), morphology (words), syntax (phrases & sentences), semantics (literal meanings of these), pragmatics (meaning in context)
    Chomsky's bulldozer analogy went further, not only describing it as "only" fantastic engineering, but also that it understands precisely nothing about language. I think he means if you give it 1TB of text that breaks every rule of human language, it would learn to predict the next word just the same. I think the two takeaways are, the generated text would have no semantic or pragmatic meaning, and, it couldn't extract the rules and tell you about how language works, or what its generated words mean, because they wouldn't have meaning, and it wouldn't know the difference.
    This implies we should be building a machine that makes intelligible abstractions, one that can tell you what rules and logic it's using.
    Our current mathematics is no barrier to this. I don't understand when any of the speakers here talk about infinite complexity, uncomputability, language being too complex, etc, it just seems like you're starting with a conclusion. No-one can predict the future perfectly and we often display intelligent behaviour and communicate just fine. Humans learn in small steps and constantly adjust their world model. IQ tests are timed, because it's more meaningful to do so. Why expect an AI to zero shot 100% on a fixed budget?
    I agree with the conclusion, hybrid machines and diversity will solve intelligence and language :-)

      I have a theory; there's no way a "machine" would have the ability to understand or interpret slang. Everyone on earth has incorporated their own unique dialect. Someone from New York might have trouble understanding someone from small-town Texas. Even in our own families, we use "code" words to convey an understanding. There's no way a machine could untangle such a personalized mode of communication.

      @@marymitchell4617 Do you not feel the need to add some caveats? Languages evolve over time, as new words emerge, the new words or usage will appear more frequently in the training data, and so would be learnable. The language model might even infer some meaning from the context, especially abbreviations. Something like ChatGPT could even just reply asking for clarification, and store your clarification for future interactions with you. This would be a form of "zero shot" learning, learning at inference time!

    3 years ago the google translator was crap. But few weeks ago I installed the translator, it schocked me from ground up - the grammar and formulation are absolutely perfect on graduate level. The DL system(NLP) mastered the syntax and symantic perfectly, that is a huge deal, because even for human to learn a language is hard, the reason is the permuted space is huge for language, and the AI mastered it. Of cause we do not talk about understanding, but it is the prove the depth matters. Only the larger and over-param. models approx. nonlinear and high dim. space well, that is mathematically clear, but what surprise to me is how those larger models performed so well.

      Yes, but worth reminding yourself from time to time that there is no "intelligence" in GoogleTranslate. All the intelligence is found in the people who programmed it, and the billions of people whose speech and text they mind. Just sayin'. Same with DeepMind and AlphaGo, etc.

    About various kind of abductions (the old one, and the new one).
    Umberto Eco in his "The limits of interpretations", (1990) distinguished three levels of abduction:
    * strongly-codified abduction
    * weakly-codified abduction
    * creative abduction
    In the strongly-codified abduction, we have a single rule (a known fact) which we use as an hypothesis to explain a specific observation. E.g.,
    Observation: "Here I'm seeing footprints of type X"
    Known fact/hypothesis: "Horses produce footprints of type X"
    Conclusion: "Here there was a horse"
    In the weakly-codified abduction, we have multiple possible rules from which we can select one as the "working hypothesis" (it could be the most plausible, if we have some way to compute that). E.g.:
    Observation: "Here I'm seeing footprints of type X"
    Known Fact 1: "Horses produce footprints of type X"
    Known Fact 2: "Deers produce footprints of type X"
    Selected Hypothesis (in some way): "Horses produce footprints of type X"
    Conclusion: "Here there was a horse"
    In the creative abduction, we create/devise a new rule (not known before), which we use as a hypothesis. E.g.:
    Observation: "Here I'm seeing footprints of type X"
    Created rule: "There exists an animal of type Y, that has 6 legs, which produces footprints of type X"
    Conclusion: "Here there was an animal of type Y"

    I've been an end user of speech recognition for 25 years as a medical transcriptionist and medical records auditor. Dr. Saba explained and validated my end user experience. I've been waiting and waiting all this time for the final 5% to 10% missing accuracy. Now I understand why it is taking so long, requiring exponential efforts far greater than conquering the first 90% to 95%, so it looks like humans will continue to be in the loop for quite some time to come -- short of a brand new mathematic model that is yet to be discovered. Fascinating conversation - thank you!!

      I’m not sure which ASR models you currently using, but there is an interesting gap between the technology available and the technology deployed right now. We run a start-up in the background specialising in ASR so we know a few things. The highest accuracy, ASR model is actually the Microsoft azure one by quite a large margin, especially streaming. The lowest latency and highest speed, batch transcription is overwhelmingly deepgram . So if you weren’t aware of this, I would suggest to implement them into your application 😄 don’t suffer with the bad transcription built in to Apple and android devices

      @@MachineLearningStreetTalk Thank you for this info, I was not aware of this. My initial experience was with the Dragon enterprise edition by Nuance. I was working on the Harvard Vanguard Clinics at the time, which to my understanding was the first commercial deployment of Dragon in a healthcare setting, and we were helping train the software. It was very interesting. Since Microsoft acquired Nuance, I wonder if they somehow merged Dragon with Azure? Appreciate your generous tidbits - I'll definitely look into everything you mentioned.

    Do you ever consider neurodivergency with how language impacts such? Just curious as my son is on the spectrum and I am also neurodivergent & our processing is atypical.
    I’ve often wondered with my son if he was to learn a language other than English he would understand his world better.
    The English language requires a lot of processing in the way that one word can have many meanings.
    There’s a different processing between reading, listening or visual cues. For instance, I am unable to process when there is loud annoying background sounds. I’m much better with visuals and also emotional meaning in order to understand and retain it.
    Please let me know if you have any shows regarding spectrum and neurodiversity.

    After school fail miserable to teach me English in years and finally learned English by watching videos on CZcams 👀👀
    Actually, I can relate very much with what was said, the 5% is very hard to conquer, it takes more than all the way until there. I spoke hundred of hours in English, but when I speak with natives that spoke thousands of hours in the language, they can still spot that I'm not native in my first sentence. In the end, it's all about data (and how you process that information).

    Saba keeps using the phrase "by ingesting text, only", as his understanding of the GTP framework. My question is, Why are we so confident that this is a true description of the OpenAI framework? We know there is fine tuning added to the model. And beyond that vague knowledge, we know relatively little about OpenAI's system. The impressive output might be explained by a large amount of fine tuning.

      That's a good point, a lot of the improvements in performance are likely down to rlfh, or something similar which they are doing. Similar concept to how Google with just page rank would be rubbish compared to them "learning to rank" from human preferences when the search engine is actually used.

      Here's the frame problem in simple words: an intelligent agent KNOWS a body of knowledge (through ML, or through traditional symbolic knowledge-basesd systems, etc. it doesn't matter). So an agent that at time t knows all of the body of knowledge K is confronted (in a dynamic and uncertain environment) with an event that does not fit all of what it knows. It has to do what is called "belief revision" and vists all it knows to see what, from what it knows, should be "adjusted" to handle the new situation. We, humans, are so good at doing this, but a machine does not know the RELEVANT parts that should be revisited, so it will have to, everytime, re-visit everything, which is computationally, not to mention cognitively implausible.
      In even simpler words: how can we get a machine to know that a new event, situation, etc is relevant only to that part of what you know and all the others are not relevant so that it can in real-time re-adjust its plan.
      We have not, yet, figured out how this can be done, neither conceptually, nor computationally.
      To start, look-up "the frame problem in AI" and start with the WikiPedia page. I hope that was helpful!

Could have as easily been written by ChatGPT, I think. « To most AI researchers, the frame problem is the challenge of representing the effects of action in logic without having to represent explicitly a large number of intuitively obvious non-effects. But to many philosophers, the AI researchers' frame problem is suggestive of wider epistemological issues. »
      Needless to say, I didn’t understand anything. But I got it immediately when you explained. Say, if I come across a strange custom or a dish that I know absolutely nothing about, I can at least recognize it as a custom/ food without having to sort through the whole of human history. Machines don’t have this instinctive reference point yet. I wonder if this also connects with the LLM problem of not ‘understanding’ specific words in relation to its use in the real world. Eg: Porcelain in baby food.

    A 4 yr old child once said to me, " I live at 45 Noel street, but I don't know who Noel is?!" As a teenager (when older) she will understand and learn that Noel isn't human. Babies expand their language fluency from communicating and learning from others and from their own experiences and deductions, extending their sentences and capacity to understand language nuances and composition. Alphago AI has done the same with its ML with Go and Chess, stumbling as an infant, then mastering strategy until it surpases humans. I cannot imagine AI being unable to "grow" these same capabilities. We are vulnerable and as such should ensure instead that AI will keep within parameters designed to assign autonomy only to its processes but not "self preservation" or its emergent control of world scale systems instead of the externally coded "creation responsibilities" that computer engineers designed it for.
    No-one wants their toaster to deny them a second slice!

    There is no doubt in my mind that AI machines will be able to do practically anything better than humans. I believe the constraint seems to be this belief that natural biology has some inherent quality that makes it intangibly better than "metal". But, the fallacy in the argument is that there is nothing in the definition of Machine and in AI, that requires that it cannot contain biological components. So ultimately, we will see mice neuron studies and other animal neuron studies that combine with electronic components to reveal surprisingly good results. So, I have to disagree with this idea that AI machines will never rule the world, it is... quite plausible when combining the machines with organics.

    Is syntax masterable? We have the rules of grammar: "pronouns reference their immediate antecedents." We also have attention. So we don't need "to know" that we generally mean a perpetrator is running. We have the statistics of attention that tells us the same thing. Combining these two, we make a guess. There's nothing to master. Our guess is either right or wrong, but it's still just a guess. Mastery implies there is an infallible route one could take.

    Our largest LLMs are three orders of magnitude away from the estimated number of synapses in the human brain. Look at the difference we've achieved going from one billion parameters to one trillion. Why would we assume we'll have less improvement with the next three orders of magnitude when we are still not seeing any diminishing returns in scale?

You need to have subjective thought in order to understand the result of the extraction computation. Semantics and grammar are very different things. Formal semantics is a very different beast to subjective understanding.       This is an interesting experiment. How far can we go to building a synthetic agent with ChatGPT as the architect and humans as its workers? ChatGPT can analyze and it can plan. Humans can implement those plans. In a small way, I've played around with this myself. Moreover, ChatGPT can certainly write component code.

    Was the work on autonomous driving completely a waste of money? All an AD system has to do to be useful is make better driving decisions than a human measured in a practical way. It doesn't have to be perfect. It can even make mistakes that a human wouldn't, as long as it also avoids mistakes that humans make. They're certainly not there yet though.

    Metagenomics Atlas would be mind blowing to the average person if they had the inferences to get how incredible is ... the amount of data being collected and the speed at which it's being assimilated is increasing ... these models themselves should be creating their own data at speeds faster that we can provide soon if not already.     @35:00 I wonder if Saba is testing the semantics in the right way? It is no good asking the language models questions. A decent look-up can out-perform a child, but does that imply language comprehension? No! The way to interrogate any machine someone claims is conscious is to ask them to work as your research assistant for a while. You will soon find out if they are conscious of platonic ideals or not, so smart fish or monkeys as opposed to innate scientists. I'll bet the bots will never function as scientists. Access to platonic ideals simply cannot be achieved physically. Please do not agree with me though, my opinion is a challenge to force you to try to better. Because if you can show me a machine that can be a good scientist (not a dumb theorem-prover), it will probably tell us something profound about our own thinking powers. That is what I want to know, something profound about human creative thought capacity, which AI paradigms cannot do. You need to build "I" not "AI".

    @30:00 Embodied mind and Heidegger et al - gotta be all _mostly_ mumbo-jumbo, if we are talking raw classical physics. Classical physics really *is* a computational paradigm, for the most part (chaotic sensitive dependence only adds complexity, not ontology). I'm a theoretical physicist though, and I personally (fwiw) don't see quantum mechanics making things much different for creatures like animals and plants. More compute power does not generate subjectivity all of a sudden at some threshold just because we have QM amplitudes, the amplitudes are still comptutional, and to think otherwise is pure magical thinking. (It could turn out true that we get such magic, but until we know more about subjectivity it would still be theoretical magical thinking, like what Doug Hofstadter indulges in.)
