  • 4449 Journey: Portland is proud of its showpiece of railroad history --- the 4449. We caught this spectacular locomotive and its train on an excursion out of Portland and on its way to Stampede Pass. Follow the 4449 through the beautiful Pacific Northwest, which provides a spectacular backdrop for one of the world's most favorite trains. A great train and a great locale ---what more could you want?
4449 Nightlight: Southern Pacific's 4449 Daylight was painted black and became 4449 "Nightlight" for the BNSF Employee Appreciation Special. Machines of Iron followed the special across the Pacific Northwest to bring you this spectacular video. Scenes in and around Vancouver, WA, the Columbia River Bridge, Spokane Bridge, Sandpoint, ID, Horse Thief Lake, and the Cascade Locks are among the highlights of this show. 4449 fireman Jack Wheelihan takes us on a tour of the 4449 cab and Doyle McCormick gives us the story on the "black" 4449.

SP 4449 has had a nice variety of paint schemes that have been applied over the years, the BNSF black/ silver paint scheme is a reflection back to the paint scheme that was worn by Southern Pacific steam engines during their final years of service during the 1950s. SP 4449 looked unique and attractive with this black and silver paint scheme from 2000-2001, the 4449 is a true supreme quality steam excursion star representative locomotive.

The whistle sounds different at 1:40 because the 4449 has a traditional steam whistle and also an air horn. The air horn was added during the years when the 4449 pulled passenger cars around the San Francisco area due to the heavy fog the area receives throughout the year.

The air horn was also added because a steam whistle isn’t going to sound off very well when they’re moving along at 80 mph

@@KCSRailstudios Montana Rail Link (MRL) ran a passenger train called the Montana Rockies Daylight Rail Tours. After this excursion closed down in 2005, the cars were sold to the American Orient Express (AOE), which was a trip hauled by Amtrak power. When AOE went bankrupt in 2008, the cars were purchased by Mid America Rail Car Leasing (MRLX). MRLX then sold the cars to a company called High Iron Rail. High Iron Rail was originally the idea of Ross Rowland who wanted to operate cars behind regularly scheduled Amtrak trains in the Northeastern part of the US from the late 1970's to the late 1990's. Sometime in either 1998 or 1999, Ross Rowland sold High Iron Rail to former Amtrak employee, Edwin E. "Ed" Ellis. Ed Ellis went on to create Iowa Pacific Holdings (IPH) in the mid 2000's. IPH owned many railroad lines in the lower 48 states, including the Mount Hood Railroad (MH) here in Oregon. After IPH itself went bankrupt in 2019, Mid America Rail Car Leasing (MRLX) stepped in on behalf of IPH and purchased the cars back from IPH. Some of these cars were then leased out to Norfolk Southern (NS). NS used some of these cars for their 21st Century Steam Program that ran under the watch of NS's Wick Moorman from 2015 - 2018, however a few NS steam trips ran until at least mid 2019. In 2019, all the cars were sold off to various excursion trains, tourist railroads, railroad history preservation organizations, and railroad museums around the country, including the Reading and Northern Railroad (R&N) in Pennsylvania, the Terminal Railroad Association (TRRA) in St. Louis, Missouri, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) in Ohio, the Lake State Railway Company (LSRC) in Michigan, an operation in California, and several other operations around the US, including the Albany and Eastern Railroad Company (AERC), and the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad (OCSR) both here in Oregon.
