I'm 3 years late but I feel like it's worth mentioning that I visited and the tour guide I talked to said that Shane Ryan and the rest of the buzzfeed crew were incredibly fun to work with and they were incredibly respectful to the mansion, maybe not so much to the ghosts wandering the twisting halls, but to the mansion and staff taking care of the mansion at the time

The supposed black object thrown at the camera really did look like a bat. When they said that, I was expecting like a black ball to come out of nowhere and miss the camera by inches, but it just looked like a bat flying from one side of the hall to the other.

Sarah was an artist, inventor and a self taught architect, it's sad that people can't embrace her for her genius and instead they prefer to paint her as crazy haunted lady
She was said to be very interested in technology, which people found strange for a woman at that time. Her paranoia over spirits, if there even was one, was probably brought on by the grief of losing her family, and she just kept expanding and remodeling the house to occupy herself.
if you're genius for being a self taught architect who makes random doors that lead to nowhere then I could be a genius too, so could 99% of kids.
I just did the tour today lol but they said she also liked to preserve water as much as possible while giving the best care to her workers by innovating new designs for the laundry room etc. She also just hated anything dealing with the Winchester rifles since it was a destructive device. She was such a sweetheart and a gentle soul
Exactly! I'll add she was overly generous to her employees and came up with invented ways to make their chores easier. There's so much myth and legend, and just outright lies about this woman, that overshadows the truth.
She was a grieving secluded woman and building her home gave her purpose and distraction. She had the money and no contractors regulations, so why not build a quirky house. Shows she had a sense of humor.
As for the doors and stairs leading to walls, people forget that much of the house was destroyed and sealed off after the earthquake. Also, she had crippling arthritis and had some staircases with small short steps in areas of the house she frequented. Explains some of the odd layout of the house.
The feeling & thought I got about Sara is that she suffered unresolved grief & depression & the house became a therapy/distraction. Sad she ran into a twat calling themselves a psychic & listened to their ridiculous rave. RIP Sara .🦋

The Winchester House was used as a set inspiration for a story in the Japanese horror manga “Ghost Hunt”, but the authors flipped the reasoning for the convoluted interior design. That it was not to keep spirits out but in. The architecture would entice curious humans or spirit mediums, then the confusing pathways, doors and secret rooms would trap them inside. 1000% more creepier that way
The only thing that keeps me from getting scared is Shane.

Nothing encapsulates the dynamic of this show's hosts quite like Ryan having a mental breakdown while Shane sings ABBA.
Sarah Winchester’s house looks the way it does because of an Earthquake that broke off some chunks of the house, it wasn’t intentional. She had a passion for architecture, and had staff she wanted to keep employed through the depression, which is why she kept renovating the house. It was her passion project.

the history of the Winchester house, and Sarah's history in general, is so fascinating. having also been there, I truly don't think the house is haunted. and I'm pretty open-minded about ghosts! I mean, the reason it's so complicated and weird is because 1. that's kind of just how victorian mansions were, 2. there was a massive (MASSIVE) earthquake in the bay area in 1906 that destroyed a fair bit of the home that sarah never had rebuilt and 3. Sarah was also just really into architecture her whole life. additionally, she wasn't involved at all with the winchester company itself, she just profited from it. so it's highly unlikely she was haunted by the victims of the Winchester rifle. but it is very possible she contacted a medium regarding her grief, as that was so very common in that time period
I hate how a horrible couple who moved in after her death destroyed her legacy with nonsense ghost stories. She was a pioneer and an icon.
