Wow they used Roman ash concrete? Thats some ancient tech there. The Romans found a silicate ash that made their concrete harden with age. So for them to build the hoover damn with that stuff is a major shoutout to the Roman Empire. Modern concrete weakens with age that was a VERY special and signifigant mix.

The most-interesting, and most-important "secret", now known, thanks to the book, is that The Six C
Oops- to finish- The Six Companies skimped on the grout curtain, the series of holes bored into the bedrock under the dam and pumped full of concrete to create a watertight barrier. The dam leaked under the foundations from the start, and the Bureau of Reclamation spent until 1948 drilling and filling hundreds of additional holes. The book, "Colossus", is not sold at the Hoover Dam Visitor's Center. I would add that, as an engineer, I was always curious about the size and design of the concrete cooling system. I did purchase a book of contemporary engineering magazine articles and found out what I needed to know. The system was rated at 1,000 tons of cooling (which, @ 12,000 BTU/ton, is 12,000,000 BTU/hour. The design was interesting. Some of the ammonia compressors were originally used as air compressors to feed jackhammers and concrete vibrators. They were re-tooled as refrigeration compressors later. The system used a wooden cooling tower, not river water, to condense the high-pressure ammonia. The plant, by the way, was located downstream, rather than upstream, as I had imagined, as the canyon was wider there. Last? The snack bar at the Visitor's Center sells the largest hotdog I have ever eaten. A footlong dog and the equivalent- length bun, with sauerkraut and mustard. Yum!
Build high pressure pipes and fast moving water pumps in a nationwide water switching network, to redirect damaging flood waters from areas of the country that are flooding into areas of the country that have drought, such as the May 2019 Arkansa /Mississippi floods, to reach Lake Mead and other drought areas. Thus instead of building levees that have to be maintained and always fail, as is being presently done, build large pipes and high pressure pumping stations.
One thing that is not so secret is that the lake will be a toxic cesspool in a few years. And the lake will be all dried up, that dam will eventually be useless.
Too bad the Hoover Dam will have no function in 10 years except as a closed road between Nevada and Arizona.Lake Mead should be a mud slurry by 2030 or so.
