and in the sense of easieness to control in strong winds you can compare any two boats, it doesnt matter what type they are, it could be a i14 and a TP52, the easiness to control is usually dependant on the type of boat, so it makes it even easier to compare

I haven't done anything this funny since my first time sailing and we hit a rock with the centerboard I went flying off the bow into the harbor and stood up on the rock! I got a daysailer now with a 7 and 9 year old I can't be flipping like these guys I go out in a little less wind,
technically the pico is made for kids, not beginners (not to say it doesnt serve as a good beginner boat, and yes they may not have the trapeze and assymetrical spinnaker, but a skiff is a very loose term to describe a high performance sailing dingy, and it also refers to small silly rowboats, but thats beside the point, and you cannot argue that a laser is not a high performance sailing dingy, and, in the sense of easyness to control 49ers are very compareble to optis and 420's

Pretty funny seeing all these comments 10-15 years later. The 49er class has produced, probably more than any other class, some of the most dominant sailors in recent history. Just take a look at all the wing trimmers/drivers in the America's cup for example.
I sail 420's and JY15's, never pitchpoled luckly. But does anyone know how that boat was underwater like that @ 1:05??? Unless they were racing, why didn't they do a controlled capsize to get it out?
a monohull hydrofoil is even less balanced than a 49er, and, you need the perfect amount of wind to hold yourself up and be flat on the water otherwise you start slipping out and dropping back into the water because the hydrofoil is in sideways...

Sure F18s and F20s are good boats, but pitchpole just as hard, even harder. Get some facts before critisizing a Class like this which is ISAF recognised, as well as being the Olympic Double handed class.
Optimus dinghy's have been an Olympic class too. I rest my case. I don't believe that a well designed boat should pitch pole any where near as much as Bethwaite's boats. I have a 7.8m trimaran that does 20kts too and it doesn't pitch pole.

Yes you can easily pitch pole a cat ...you can do it almost to order. These are the most fun dinghy to sail in my opinion. They are one of my favorite. Way better than the 420s and FJs I sailed in college.

This is most dangerous olimpic class in sailing. Also it costs so much and when crash with this thingy its actually broken.
