2021 Starboard Waterline & Generation 12’6″x28″ Comparison Review

  • Both the Waterline and Generation from Starboard are very different boards, suited to different water conditions.
    The Waterline shape is specifically designed for flat water paddling in calm waters as this is where you will benefit most from the design elements.
    Whilst the Generation is one board for every type of condition. The shape of this board allows you to paddle fast for flat water paddling, but has some rocker in the nose shape to perform well in downwind, surfing and ocean paddling/choppy conditions.

    Just a thought, it would be really useful if in comparison videos, you showed the two boards being paddled side by side by paddlers putting in equivalent strokes. Thanks again for the review.

    Great review on the Waterline! Made for speed, it’s not the typical touring board. It’s so different than the JP GT-S that I don’t think they can actually be compared. If I were to enter an amateur sprint competition, I’d pick the waterline. If I wanted to exercise / cover distance, again the Waterline. If I wanted to attract the girls laying on the beach, hm, maybe again the waterline. It just happens that the Waterline seems to be a more specialised board, whereas the GT-S seems to be suited for a more relaxed style of paddling where one is not required to get speed in flatwater conditions in order to get the most from it. Would be very interesting to see the Supboarder Pro video and that’s why I’m looking forward to it. Kind regards - Georgi

    I have a 14x28" carbon Waterline. It is amazing to paddle. It makes NO sound...at all. I use it for flat water racing. I LOVE it . I waited 18months to get it and am in no way disappointed. Fine in water up to about 125mm waves.
    However it could be better. There are no side handles and makes it incredibly difficult to carry and next to impossibleto carry in wind. I had to gerry rig one on the fitting ojn the right and put a strap through the elastic fittings to carry and control when walking with it.
    The deck could be 25mm deeper at the standing area, to improve the primary stability.
    Re: The tail drag. Because the board has so little nose bouyancy , if you move a very tiny bit forward, so the nose sinks to the max forward length , the tail wings sit clear ( I am 84kg).
    Also the low floatation tail and the width, it bouy turns really well!

      Can I get a little more info/stats on you, as a paddler? I am looking to replace an Infinity Whiplash for flatwater. The Waterline is one of my options. I am 6' and 240lbs. Been paddling a 14'x25" Whiplash for 2 years and just can't seem to make this board work for me.

      @@aaronatkins6677 What are you after? I have been paddling about 3 years now but raced cats and for a while , dabbled in designing an A class, made and surfed surfboards since 1968 ( can't do it now because of my eyesight and neck). I am 84 Kg and 177cm. I train on flatwater/ no- current impounded freshwater river and race mostly in an estuary, so flat and small short chop. We currently have a silting section in the race course that requires running about 100meters through ankle to knee deep water ( hence the desire for decent handles). My last race board was a 14x28 SIC RS SF. Should have listened to the salesman and got the 26" as these are insanely stable ( my first board with any dugout). Note: I am 68 and have only 40% lung function so I cannot get the top speeds sustained of ordinary people, which is why I choose a board the is faster in the mid to 3/4 range. Come from an endurance sports background. 5km times around 37mins, 10km times arounf 75-80mins and 15km times 115-120mins. Hope that is useful.
      My next board ( waiting for delivery) is a ONE SUP Edge Pro 2.0 14x25.5 ( non hollow carbon)

    Great review!! The Waterline is sooo fast Starboard is taking this design and tweaking it for the 2022 Sprint. The 2021 waterline is faster than their raceboards in flat water for most people, minus those few elite paddlers. I have yet to try a Generation but think its a wonderful design especially the 14' for Ocean paddling - Like to see Starboard include a Race Ultra fin with it or would suggest it as an add on for faster paddling and better tracking

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi. Yes, the Generation would glide better than the 11' x 32" as it is narrower and longer. The stability of course depends on your weight and height, but for using a board in a range of different conditions, the generation is hard to go past.

      Hi Richard, the Carbon Top is durable, but the construction is definitely more suited to getting more performance out of the board. The Lite Tech is more robust and harder wearing and the weight reiterates this, but it depends what's more important to your paddling needs - more performance or longer lasting. Cheers, Beau

      Hi Richard, I have the 12.6 Generation in Lite Tech and I can tell you it's a great board but (also) sensitive board. It needs needs very little power in contact with something hard (like a stone or so) for getting a crack at the glossy surface. Nothing serious... but since you are asking this, I thought you should get this information... ;)
