  • After 4 years of development, Whisker has announced the Litter-Robot 4. Compared to the Litter-Robot 3, Whisker's newest automatic litter box brings an enhanced sensor system for better multi-cat performance, more in-depth app readouts, and, perhaps most obvious, a larger entryway that makes it more accessible for large cats.

      @Jimmy Smith, I've had cats when I was younger and now I am debating about getting one. I have multiple issues. One being where to put the litter box (and what kind?), Also, I now have some very expensive antique furniture where the wood/fabric is not very cat "friendly." A friend adopted a male siamese cat who I adored because he was a handful (in a good way), very verbal and not destructive. "Bo" was a clean freak as he would not use his litter box until his previous BM was removed. lol

It also keeps the litter spray under control if you have an OCD cat who covers and covers and then covers some more🤣 Emptying the tray and putting in a new bag takes me 5 minutes, tops including putting in a new bag. If someone had told me I would one day spend this much money on a litter box I would have told them they were crazy. I have had mine almost 2 weeks and I love it. Before I scooped every morning and cleaned cat litter around the box every morning. It has cut out both those tasks. Even though I cleaned it every morning my cat scratched incessantly looking for a place to go. I wondered if it was because the odor residue was still there even though I used Fresh Step Multiple Cat to help with that. Ever since I set up the robot my kitty walked right in used it and never went back. No odor whatsoever. No scooping every morning. No incessant scratching. My kitty and I give this a 10!!! We love it!!

    I have 3 LR3's in my facility for 18 months now and I've encountered the DFI issues on all 3 of them. Out of curiosity I dove in to the DFI issue causing a wide range of issues including;
    Over torque fault,
    Drawer full Indication.
    Pinch detect fault.
    And the drive motor sounding like its laboring heavily.
    This eventually leads to the dreaded flashing blue light, even on power cycle.
    When I replaced the DFI circuit boards I kept the old ones and so I took a close look at both and noticed something extremely interesting about them!. The Emitter board (the one that is installed on the left) has a 20 pin surface mount chip that interestingly enough is located close center of the clear plastic shield's opening. Both the Emitter and Detector boards have a clear coat on them that's suppose to render them moisture resistant. But it seems that the bank of pins on one side of the chip that's exposed develops bad solder joints coupled with moisture intrusion and 1 on up to 5 pins will develop this issue causing them to blacken and look corroded.
    I decided after the 3rd DFI malfunctioned to look at the 2 that had replacements and sure enough they are starting developing the same issue but hasn't failed YET! I then took a peek at the newly failed LR3's DFI and sure enough the same issue!!!
    This IS the reason so many LR3's have malfunctioned! Here is the Good part!!!! The bad solder joints and corrosion issue is completely repairable WITHOUT replacement of the DFI!!!
    Those that are out of warranty and don't want to spend the $80 for the replacement, JUST re-solder all 10 pins on that side of the chip!!!. Afterwards Clean the repaired area up of all flux, then use a clear coat nail polish and reseal the chip pins the make it moisture resistant.
    If you don't have electronic soldering skills find someone in your area that does and work a deal out to fix it. Its literally a 5 to 10 minute job!!!
    I re-soldered all the malfunctioning DFI's I have and tried them out and glory be they work PERFECTLY once again!!!
    I pre-emptily reflow that bank of pins on the good DFI's showing the beginning of this issue and they are good to go for a long time!!!
    This is the weak point with the LR3 and the fix is so simple!
    The unfortunate thing is most the DFI circuits that are manufactured will eventually succumb to this issue because the soldering and moisture protection is insufficient to begin with.

    • @mikeshowtoandthings
      @mikeshowtoandthings Před rokem +3

      @@johnhildreth6224 I thought about how to do it but the controller board requires a parallel input and an output from the DFI boards, otherwise the DFI and controller board are constantly communicating to each other. If you cant get your current malfunctioning DFI re-soldered and you do purchase a replacement, I HIGHLY recommend getting some clear nail polish and to apply a few generous coats over the chip pins on the Emitter's I/O chip ( the black square with silver pins sticking out 2 sides located at the center of the Emitter board) on the replacement (new) DFI to make certain it remains moisture resistant as the existing clearcoat on the boards are often lacking when it comes to that particular area. I also recommend saving the malfunctioning DFI so you can have it re-soldered by someone at your leisure, this way you have a backup in case your replacement has some other type of failure.

  • @XIIchiron78

    The LR3 was expensive enough to make me skeptical, but I went for it because my cat is exceptionally prissy and won't use litter that's not perfectly clean... And I have to say it's probably paid for itself twice over in a couple years just because it uses so much less litter than before. That's something people don't talk about, but it's very efficient at sifting. And my cat loves it.
    I can agree about their support too - their refurbishment service is a good deal and I like that they sell most of the parts even for old units. I had the same sensor issues and they were quite helpful once I actually got ahold of them.
    I do think their warranty is unacceptably short for the cost, and for the number of issues people have. At least they've bumped it to a year on the 4, but they should really include at least 3 for what is now an even more expensive product.

      We are considering getting 2 of them. I think with 7 cats it's probably a requirement. Right now we use 3 litter boxes. (She'd probably keep a regular litter box in play anyway.) I presume you have both version 3 and 4? Seriously, what kind of service maintenance are you talking about? I wouldn't mind doing that side of the job and the monthly clean if it helped my wife who usually takes care of the litter boxes (among other things), me doing my part to help maintain the unit would be in my job description. 🙂
      If you have a minute I would love to hear you thoughts on this maintenance. We realize new items will either fail immediately, or within a day, or week, or month, or year after that then run forever with some maintenance. I would love to get them if only to reduce her workload and so am keenly interested in exactly how much maintenance and costs are involved with that? Saving her time is the real gaol and benefit. At least that's what I hope for. I'm retired, with disabilities (not severe, but limiting) she still has 5 years to go; so any advice would be warmly appreciated!🤩🤗

    • @Ms2cents
      @Ms2cents Před rokem +6

      I just checked their website and they offer a 3 year extended warranty for $100 extra when you buy the litter robot. For the money you’re paying for this machine, it should be free! The majority of the parts are plastic anyway (which is cheaper to manufacture) except for the sensors, motors and such so I don’t think it will affect their revenue. They can look at their stats and see from customers support how many who notified the company has specific issues with certain parts. If more people are having issues with the sensor or motor than anything else, then offer an extended warranty for that only which is $25 or $50. They should just cover the plastic parts under the regular warranty and make it into a 3 year warranty. I guarantee you, more people will buy these litter robot if they did do it this way! That’s how some of the car manufacturers have been able to sell newer cars. They offer 5 years 100k mile limited warranty on certain parts of the vehicle because they know it’s not going to break down or they know these parts are well made and exclude the more expensive complicated parts to 36k miles or equivalent of 3 years. I’m just making an analogy here as a college marketing student. It’s a marketing tactic. It makes them look good and it benefits the customer if something does happen with the parts through no fault of their own. It’s a win win for everyone.

    We've owned Litter Robots for over a decade now. Currently, we own 2 of the litter robot 3 and the big issues for us, which I don't think this design has resolved, are the following: One; no matter which clumping litter you use, you're going to get a lot of tracking. Lots of cats tend to dig to cover up their waste, or they jump out of the box which gets more litter outside. Two; the spinning or sifting phase means that the dirty litter is being moved into the ceiling area of the litter robot, dirtying the top of the litter box, which for larger cats ends up getting their back fur dirty. Three, the litter gets dumped into the same spot in the pan. While some of the clumps roll down to the sides, the bulk of the clumps remain in one area. This ends up triggering the litter sensor to notify the pan is full. The only way to solve this is by checking on the pan throughout the day and shaking it to disperse the clumps throughout the entire pan. In other words, more work. We've owned these version 3 for over 5 yrs. In all that time, we've had to replace that sensor endless amounts of time and on another occasion even the entire base of it. Suffice to say, after all these years, we moved on to the X-Large Tidy cat litter box system, which I have to say has been so much better. No tracking, no dust and truly a breeze to clean. Plus no more hauling around heavy litter or these huge contraptions to clean. Happy to finally be hassle free!

      @@SoManyRandomRamblings YW. I can tell you that we were really surprised with the Tidy Cat system. With 3 large cats; we’re just ecstatic about the fact that we don’t have to deal with litter tracking mess or the dust. Plus our largest is a 20lb diabetic. So he drinks a lot of water and pees a lot. We change the pads about twice a day and so far they’ve handled the large amounts of urine very well. Also, we have antique wood floors, which sometimes get dirty with clay tread marks. Lastly, our cats paws are a lot cleaner too. Suffice to say, we’ve completely decommissioned the litter robots.

      @LilyUnicorn Před 2 lety +10

      Hell no. Dust pellet scatter everywhere. Dust. Everywhere. Breeze to clean? Tidy cat sucks.
      My cat literally kicks everything out across the room on purpose. And takes out pellets on purpose.
      Litter robot is the least amount of work i have ever had to do and mine works fine. You got a faulty one it sounds like. On a side note the clumps in litter robot are pretty evenly distributed. One of my cats does it himself. He hears that thing rolling. He immediately waits for the chute then sticks his paws in to push the older ones out of the way.
      I have a wonderful cat who does the work for me

    • @aldridkg
      @aldridkg Před 2 lety +7

      @@LilyUnicorn Hmm, the tidy cat system uses hard pellets. So where exactly are you getting dust from? Moreover, the litter robot stops cycling when it detects extra weight (cat inside of it). Therefore, I’m not sure how your cat manages to stay inside the litter robot while it’s cycling, in order to wait until the 4”x4” square is accessible, so that he can stick his “paw” all the way into the 4” deep pan and then spread the litter evenly around the area of a 12”x14-16” pan; all within the time span of a few seconds before the trap closes. In summary, either you’ve never really owned a litter robot or perhaps you should consider putting your cat in show business. LOL.
      Lastly, the tidy cat litter box consist of 2-3 super light plastic items, depending which one you have. We have the extra large one, so 3 items, which are made of hard plastic. One, the tall plastic rim that sits on top of the litter tray. Two, the hard plastic litter tray. 3 the hard plastic flat pad tray. The rim sits on top of the litter tray and the pad tray slides into the litter tray. No weight and no difficulties whatsoever in taking apart or washing. It literally took me 2 min to wash with a hose and another 2 min to dry and this is their largest litter system. Being that we have 3 large cats and that I’ve spent over a decade cleaning litter robots, I can accurately state that they’re heavy and not very easy to clean at all. Plus assuming that your fantastical cat also cleans and shakes all the litter out of his paws before he steps out of the litter box, right? LOL To reiterate, between the fantastical tale of your litter self cleaning cat, along with complaints of dust allegedly produced by hard and water repellent pellets, it doesn’t sound like you’re very familiar with either of these products.

    • @aldridkg
      @aldridkg Před 2 lety +2

      If you check the litter robot website, they don’t recommend using 1 litter box for multiple cats. We have 3 large cats and purchased 2 of the litter robots about 5 yrs ago. One of our cats is a diabetic. So he drinks a lot of water and pees just as much. There’s heavy usage for both litter bots. Usually, with our 3 cats, we have to empty the pan every day and wash it every 2 weeks. Plus fill it up with litter every couple of days. Additionally, the clumps get dumped into the same spot in the pan. While some of them roll off to the sides, the majority stay in one area. Thus, as the clumps pile upward, the sensor gets triggered as if the pan is full. So, we have to check the pan throughout the day and shake it to disperse the heap of clumps throughout the rest of the pan.
      I’ve been a big fan of the litter robot for a very long time, plus we’ve owned them for over a decade. With that said, between the tracking of litter, the dust, the near constant shaking of the pan, the refilling of litter and the total pain it is to clean them, due to their size, we are exhausted. I came across the Tidy Cat system and that has finally given us some peace. No dust, no tracking or messes outside, no shaking of pan, super lightweight and easy to clean. Plus those pellets last a month. All we do is scoop up the poop once or twice a day and replace the urine pad twice a day. I’ve washed it once, the thing comes apart in a min-everything is plastic, easy to hose and while down. Permanently decommissioned our litter robots. Now, it’s just one thing to deal with. Lastly, our cats paws are clean and so are their back fur.

I thought it was gonna have to go back. Well I turned it off and just manually cycled until she was using it consistently. Then while we were home I would leave it on so she could get used to it. It helped that my two other cats were using it and showing her it was okay. A lot of treats and reassurance later tried again from step one and now she loves it and I leave it on all the time all my cats are using it and I love it!!!!.

    • @jaygyver7213
      @jaygyver7213 Před rokem +3

      @@CinCee- The reason for a clay based litter is the more compact/harder it clumps the less it falls apart before it has a chance to fall through the chute and less litter contamination, if it breaks up too much then it will mix back in with the good litter and you will have to replace it more often. Our timer is set at 15 min and that seems to work best for the urine. Our cats will still use it if it hasn't cycled from the last cat to use it. That's one of the benefits of the LR as it reduces the times you have to replace the litter.
      We've had our LR3 for over three years now and no issues with our cats. It takes around a month to use up the bucket brand we use for two cats and it takes around 5 days (?) to fill the tray, but we can go a few more days when it says it's full if we shake flat the pile then hit rest, as the older LR3's dump towards the side.
      Some brands do have quite a lot of dust so those MAY be an issue? Their Whiskers brand say's it's dust free but even it does have a tiny bit. I just use a store bought "Tidy Cat" brand I think it's called and it seems to work the same as theirs, clumping and dust wise. They all have dust, it's just a matter of finding the right one. I don't think we have ever had to wipe off any excess dust in or around the LR.

    I've got the LR3 and our first one actually was defective and LR support was fantastic. They replaced it after basic troubleshooting, no questions asked. We also invested in the three year extended warranty on it. Our cat has always loved it, chooses it exclusively over his normal box litterbox (may be due to placement as well). But I'm not sure about the LR4 simply because he's 13lbs and while the LR3 isn't a tight fit for him, just not sure if the smaller inside of the LR4 would be too much of a squeeze for him. The new features are really great...especially the litter level sensors! I with the LR3 had this. But for now I think we'll stick with the LR3. We've had it for about a year and a half now and again, once our first defective unit was replaced? We've had 0 issues with this one!

I don’t want to need to CZcams or google every time I need to do something with the box. I’m old school and want to read about the process of taking it apart before I actually take it apart to clean. It’s interesting that they use a clay litter. That’s what I’ve found to work best. Clay seems to be more absorbent than others in my experience resulting in less odor. The downside is that clay is very dusty. The used litter is enclosed better, however my concern is that it might not allow it to dry out as well as the previous version. I have a whole house dehumidifier. Combined with using clay litter in the older version I’ve found that it tends to dry out enough to control odor without needing to have the tray tightly sealed. BTW, the Whisker app is compatible with litter robot 3 and adds functionality. The Whisker app lets us power cycle the older robot. I couldn’t do that before with the old app. I always had to physically go to the robot but now I can power cycle it remotely if it gets stuck.

    I've been using litter Robot since the first one was introduced at CES, and I have had about 16 total LR3's since 2016, I have 9 cats, of those 16 about half had gone bad after 2-3 years due sensor issues, I have 4 LR4's on the way and really hope they have finally fixed these sensor issues!

    • @Flidan
      @Flidan Před rokem +8

      @@AllAboutCatsYT 7/8 of the LR3's that have gone bad after about 2-3 years, the culprit always being corrosion build up on the metal contact sensor. The plastic pinch sensor bar will separate these metal plates in the event it has pressure put on it, severing the electrical contact and preventing the globe from rotating. The problem is that these metal plates are exposed and directly above the waste drawer, so over time the urine and fecal matter will cause corrosion. Whiskers solution is to clean the metal plates with alcohol and q-tips once a month, which if you know where these plates are, and that you need to do it, you'll know they are in a phenomenally tedious place to clean. Even if you do clean them thoroughly, cleaning underneath where the plates make contact is even more difficult, and can also deform the plates making them lose all contact. If these plates do not make contact, the unit will stop functioning all together, turning it into a normal litter box.
      The sad part is, is that this design flaw could easily be fixed by either changing the type of sensor, or housing the metal contact plates in something to protect them from exposure.
      Other than that, I had one unit whose motor gave out after 6 years of heavy use, so I really don't have any complaints about that one.
      Otherwise I find them great, I have cats ranging in size from about 7 lbs to 28 lbs, 4 DSH, 2 Bengals, 1 F2 Savannah, and 1 F1 Savannah, all of them have no problems using the LR 3's any of the prior models had been to small for my larger cats. My sole problem is that it has utterly spoiled some of the cats to the point that if the litter isn't perfect they'll just go in front of them. But other than that, I can't see myself ever going back to a normal litter box.

    I'll stick with pine pellets, $6 for a 40 pound bag at Tractor Supply. The pellets absorb urine and its odor, breaking down into sawdust, and my 2 cats typically poop once a day, so I just scoop 2 poops a day on average out, and flush down the toilet. And about once a week, I throw away the dry, odorless sawdust. I will never go back to clumping clay.

    Also, looking forward to the hopper they’re making to automatically top off the litter as needed
    Lastly, for anyone concerned about the price; it was the best money I ever spent since I literally haven’t touched dirty litter once since buying this and in the 3 years I’ve had it i would say it’s paid for itself with how much less litter we waste due to how efficiently it scoops dirty clumps and sifts the rest for reuse

She walks in and pees right at the edge of the liner and then jumps out. So even at 15 minutes. It won't clump and when it turns it lands on the inside roof and makes a huge mess. It's a PAIN to clean that. I would love a hopper that spread a thin layer of litter after the cat exits. I have an uncovered litter box for her, but she won't use it . There's just no good solution out there for cats that don't cover their pee and poo.

    Hello, me again. I just got my LR-4 and we love it. We've already heard of some issues with it people are having. So far (a week only) we have not, with 6 cats ranging from 10lbs to almost 20lbs, this puts anything to the test in one week. We still have our 2 LR-3's and one large covered regular box so the use of the new one is not heavy. It's average as they all tend to use all of them regularly. The non robot box is used the least though. I'll update if we run into any big issues with the LR-4, but so far I'm so glad we saved for it as one of our LR-3's is due for a major over haul. We still get the odd hood censor notice with one of them but it always continues on with the cycle and hasn't so far caused a real fuss. I clean the censors regularly and it always helps right after but the one LR-3 still just ends up having that notice resume every time it cycles. We did make sure it wasn't off every time and none of the cats were "stuck" in the thing or anything so it's safe and still operable, just annoys me that I get that warning notice everytime it cycles via the app. I do think there's much improvement in the 4, mostly in the waste drawer. It just piled up in the 4 inch area while the rest of the pan was unused in the 3. Now the opening is bigger and the pan deeper so where the dumping happens it doesn't pile up and cause major headaches for cleaning when the drawer gets pulled out. I'm not loving the redesign of the step up, I was hoping they would make a tray with the hole/type mat motif like another automatic litter box has. But i think I'll make one for ours as the biggest complaint is still the tracking of litter from the cats coming out of the things. Ugh, that someone would come out with that perfect litter that clumps perfect and doesn't track. Sigh... it's a tough order. Hint for all automatic spinning type litter box owners... always set your box to wait at least 15 minutes as the interval between cats visit and cycle... it will greatly change how disgusting the inside of the box where the cats go gets, if the clumps are well formed and covered the shmear is greatly reduced. I feed schedule my cats instead of free feed so it helps because they usually eat and within 15 minutes all 6 are ready to visit the cat commode. So two cats can get in and do their thang before a cycle. Wear and tear on anything motorized is always going to happen, so the less times it cycles the better for the machine in general. Upkeep and maintenence is key for longevity just like washing machines and dishwashers etc. Maintain and enjoy your money's worth, neglect and regret.

      I've been looking into getting a couple of these, and your post caught my attention. I thought I saw on their site that the time between cycles is variable and can be modified by a timer. Have you found that out since you first posted. I know that to clump firmly it needs some time; but, not sure that it always needs the full 30 minutes, and now I'm wondering... we have 7 cats, and you're right. It's one reason we have three litter boxes! 😅 I was thinking two of the Robots would work, and I thought I read we could adjust the time to clump before it cycled. Can you confirm if that is true; or are we stuck with waiting 30 minutes.
      We have one advantage though... we have a large fenced yard (which of course they can get out of... lol) but, it's a safe haven for them if any dogs show up... Still the benefit is that we let them go out when the weather permits and they do seem to prefer doing their business out there. But, any info you have discovered about if the timer can be changed, and if so, what's the best shortest clumping time needed would be much appreciated. You might need a 2nd unit, or a shorter cycle if possible. 😉

At first it will be BLACK as tar, as you keep on going it will eventually get a little lighter. If you have the patience to continue until the eraser residue is light gray you wont have to do it again for more then a year. I rarely have that kind of patience and clean the prongs when i do the deep clean, just until it is a dark grey or 10-15mins of rubbing per prong. Works decently for me. Hope it helps

This is a widely reporting issue. Their customer service is overwhelmed with wait times in excess of an hour. This issue started happening after about 3 weeks of use. THANK YOU FOR THE REVIEW! As a LR3 owner w/2 kitties, from your and others' video reviews, here are the things I personally like about the LR4: (a) the bags will now wrap around the waste drawer as opposed to the LR3's pinchy bag insertion and inherent spillover; (b) the reset and all buttons are now located on TOP of the machine (no bending over) and lockout buttons are great since my kitties jump atop my LR3; (c) it will identify the user by weight - and later by name (for us multiple kitty households); (d) the "waste bin is full" light is now MUCH more noticeable than the faintly flashing blue button on the bottom of the LR3; (e) since the globe's front ring remains on the base unit, removal and cleaning of the globe will undoubtedly be more convenient; (f) it was stated that the sensors have been adjusted to eliminate problems; and (g) I understand one can now install a back-up battery for unforeseen power outages!
    My only con is that the buttons on top are NOT labeled and hope there is an official LR or 3rd-party text template. However, this is only a small nit because I'm sure I'll soon permanently figure out where the RESET button is (which I press 90% of the time).
    As for general comments: I don't feel my LR3 is loud whatsoever so the lesser decibel readings are of small matter to me. Also, while I generally like the larger opening, this inherently means a larger area of potential smell can escape, so I feel this is a double-edged sword. Lastly, it is irrelevant to me if there is a blue or white night light - I'm betting this was changed only to put in something "new." Hmm, of now of course a disco ball could be a wild kind of late-night addition inside (perhaps tomcats of questionable character can sell catnip in the washroom too)!
    Seriously though, I also have three questions I hope you (or any LR4 owner) might answer:
    (1) My cats jump on top of my LR3 which activates the timer cycle. Because the LR4's globe seems enclosed will a cat jumping on top of the LR4 activate the timer cycle likewise (to check, maybe just push down on it like a 5-10 lb kitty would)?
    (2) My kitties often stick their heads only in the LR3 just because they're curious kitties. Sometimes it starts the 7-minute weight-activated cycle timing and sometimes not. With the LR4's new laser cat-sensors, if they penetrate the opening "curtain" of lasers as opposed to getting fully in, will this activate the cycle timing?
    (3) I've measured the actual USABLE/inside space in my LR3's waste bin to be 5"H x 11"W x 11"D". What is the similar USABLE/inside (H x W x D) space measurement in the LR4's waste bin? I'm asking for a measurement that is different than the manual's dimensions they provide of the entire bin.
