  • Co-hosted by The Shabazz Center and Black Women Radicals, this event on “The Intellectual Life & Legacy of Dr. Betty Shabazz”, was held on Zoom on Sunday, December 20th at 6 PM EST.
    Dr. Betty Shabazz (1934-1997) was an educator, activist & leader who contributed significantly to Black political thought and behavior. In honoring her life, leadership, and legacy, this event, in partnership with The Shabazz Center and Black Women Radicals, centers Dr. Shabazz and her important contributions to Black social movement building and political memories in the U.S. and globally. Themes of the conversation included recovering and restoring the archives of Dr. Shabazz; Dr. Shabazz's activism and Black American Muslim women's leadership; Dr. Shabazz's radical friendships and sisterhoods; and why education was and is so important to the legacy of Dr. Shabazz.
    Panelists for this event included: Ms. Ilyasah Shabazz; the Chairperson of The Malcolm X & Betty Shabazz Center, professor, advocate, author, and daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz; Dr. Robyn C. Spencer, an Associate Professor of History at Lehman College where she teaches courses on the Black freedom movement and author of "The Revolution Has Come: Black Power, Gender and the Black Panther Party" published by Duke University Press; and Sister Aisha H.L. al-Adawiya; founder and President of Women in Islam, Inc., an organization of Muslim women which focuses on human rights and social justice.
