  • Carl and I give you a look at Historicon 2024, the largest historical miniatures convention in the United States! There were many unbelievably beautiful games...and although we couldn't show...we tried to hit the highlights including an interview with the creator of a phenominal Arnhem board. Check it out!

Yea I forgot to mention that one in my comment, it was totally out of left field for me to think of how someone could come up with the idea for it and turn it into a game like that. Extremely original concept and should have gotten an award for it (if they didn't). 👍👍💯❤

@@SugarmountaincondoThis is not my creation, my game is but a shallow imitation of John Rigley’s Moby Dick that he created years ago for his grandchildren. He was inspired by the Eureka 28mm whaleboats and decided “I have to make a game with these”.
I played in his game in Vermont and absolutely loved it. Stupid fun and simple.
Due to cost of the figures I decided to handcraft mine in 15mm, but that scale allowed me to get accurate sperm whale models.

There where two Arnhem bridge games. A CoC version run by Lard America and a Bolt Action one. The one with the mirror was the BA version. Both were excellent presentations.

One thing I noticed was the Saturday night session was very empty. It used to be the big finally, with everyone getting in the last game of the weekend, and then a number of later games. This year I saw @ 25% of the tables in use. All the halls were empty, and the games didn’t seem that full.
Seems Saturday afternoon is the last really big session.
I guess the crowd is packing up early.

The Convention looks awesome and no matter what genre or scale, the miniatures looked fantastic, and I know a lot of love & effort went into making/painting them for display and play and even tho I am not a Sho-Gun type of guy, the Japanese model shown in the intro to this video looked super! And I do mean all of the buildings and terrain and not just the figures.
I would also say that playing with a double-blind system and having a game-master/referee running it is just super excitement for players and gives a better "feel" for real warfare. In the mid 1980's when I was in the U.S. Nay, we played Avalon Hills Flat Top game a lot using 2 games in 2 different rooms and a Ref and a chain of command for the different Task Forces and man oh man was that a blast, always on pins and needles and I encourage any gamers or clubs out there to play Flat Top or similar games like this that can be adopted to a double blind system because it brings so much more realism into it and all of the planning & tactics involved far out way the eventual roll of the dice.
Yes, the Arnhem 28mm game looked great and the bridge/buildings looked so great. The Viking game looked interesting too.
And it was great to see younger players whom I know need extra attention to keep them involved, but they are the future of our beloved hobby and I highly encourage again gaming groups & clubs to include and foster them to be involved.
I know it sounds corny to say it, but I loved seeing people dressed to impress and wearing uniforms/helmets/playing the part 😜
When I used to host a gaming session at my home many years ago, I would hang about 4-5 different Military Flags on my front porch to show it was game day 😁and I always provided drinks & snacks and made big feast of a meal so that everyone would stay longer and not leave just to get something to eat.
Some play-by-play reviews of games like the Midway & Battle of Britain would be great for all of us to see that couldn't attend.
One of the guys who served on my Navy Destroyer was descendent of Gen. Burgoyne, he was 4th or 5th generation I believe, and I used to give him much grief about it because his ancestors were land lubber's in the Army and he was a sailor now and whenever we played Axis & Allies, we assigned him to play the U.K. 😛

ROW WELL 41 AND LIVE - We've done a Roman/Greek Pirates ramming-galley game here in K.C. Mo. with white Roman and gray Greek Pirites based on the BEN HUR movie naval battle with about 20 multi-sized galley ships on each side with an island chain going down the middle of the table giving each side choices about WHERE and HOW to apply their ships thru each channel gap or around to get behind the enemy fleets with lots of ramming/boarding hand-to-hand melees, and catapults firing rocks and pots full of GREEK-FIRE to start fire on the ships !! :-)

A BRIDGE TOO FAR - We did this battle-game here in K.C. Mo. a while back on a 40-foot long table in 20mm tanks and infantry with 30 Corp starting at one end of the table and Arnhem bridge at the other end of the 40-foot table with ALL the rivers, bridges, and towns to fight thru during the 3-day convention !! A once in a life-time wargame to be a part of ?? :-)

I've seen a few vids about Historicon 2024, and naturally they all comment on the Jim Purky (AKA Der Alte Fritz) 54mm Pickett's Charge game. There is NO QUESTION it was visually stunning! However, I just have to wonder how interesting a game it actually was? Seems like it would just involve the Confederate players marching straight across the board, and the Union players just shooting artillery, and eventually rifled muskets at them. Then, in the end, the Confederates would finally try to charge home...
