    Hi I subscribed to your channel. Very informative videos. I once raised one nest of canaries, it was four babies. It was 30 years ago. They were red factor canaries. The book I read about it said to cut burlap up into 1 inch squares and pull it apart for nesting materials. I did and they used it. It also said do not use cotton and I noticed you mentioned that in your video.Have you ever heard of using burlap for nesting materials?

  • @pdg7290
    @pdg7290 Před rokem +1

    I have a quick question for you. I bought a male gloster. loved to sing. decided to get him a girlfriend to breed. as soon as i introduced her he stopped talking, barely makes peeps but they get along. is this because theyre in the same cage without a divider so he has no reason to sing anymore, he found a mate? would introducing a metal grid divider so theyre technically separate, but in the same cage make him sing again?
    or, did he stop singing cause he needs to get used to her?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před rokem

      Most males will not sing as much once they are with a female. If you want him to sing more then I would separate him from the female.

  • @pullbackbaby
    @pullbackbaby Před 2 lety +2

    Try and go over as many details as you can that you have learned. Such as lighting timers food you use other than egg food. Have you ever used one mail for more than one female? Sometimes a male will push an egg out of the nest so I can keep having fun. Sometimes you'll have to foster a baby because of a bad mother and father neglect. People reading this should also chime in the comments to try and help others if possible.

    great video! so when the female sets up the nest with the nesting material does this always mean she will lay eggs or no?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 5 měsíci

      Not always! In general when a female builds a nest that does mean that she is ready to breed and eggs soon appear afterwards. I have had a couple of female canaries that build nest readily and never lay any eggs but I would say that is more of an exception than normal. But it does happen.

      It depends on how your canaries are prepared and at what light intervals they are currently at. But as a good rule of thumb when the temps start getting really hot the canaries stop breeding.

      Do'nt know where you are,but in Wales we always take eggs away until 3rd is laid. Put the 3 back in nest late afternoon and hen will begin incubating. The reason? Young will hatch out together and compete equally for eggfood,which can be bought or grate a boiled egg and mix with butchers rusk or crushed marie biscuits

    QUESTION: When you take away the eggs so she can lay more & give them all to her at the same time so she can hatch them all together what do you do with the eggs to take care of them? Do they need to be kept warm? Seems like that defeats the purpose?? They survive just fine on their own with no heat?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  Před 2 lety +1

      Eggs when recently laid can remain viable for many days even up to 2 weeks if taken care of properly. With my canary eggs I usually will pull them and keep them on a soft cloth inside a container. I keep the eggs at room temperature and I rotate them once daily. Once the hen has laid the 4th egg then I place all of the real eggs back into the nest.
