I was surprised to see you tackle the vertical up with stick until you mentioned your previous experience from back in the day, quite impressive, certainly hope mine look as tidy, it has been a while
When I was a teenager and learning to weld and we didn't know any really experienced welders if you could do a proper vertical up weld you were thought of as a pretty shit hot welder. Not so much nowadays plenty of good welders and machines about today. John
@@farminglifeaustralia6716 I walked into a fabrication shop in Brisbane when I was 18, the owner asked if I could do any of the 30 duties listed, I said no to all except 1 so he hires me, I was confused why he would hire someone with virtually zero required skills in fabrication and he said I can teach you everything on that list, I practiced over and over welding stick, especially vertical up and overhead until they looked molded

Thanks I normally don't like multi tools I find that they do everything sort of but no one thing well. This is not the case with this machine. I would buy another one in a flash. John

really appreciate you demonstrating this and giving your honest no-fuss opinion- i've been tossing up between getting this or another branded multifunction welding unit to start out with but you have sold me on this. I hope Unimig supports you as you deserve it!
You are a very experienced welder, I’ve done a bit of arc fabrication no tig and very little mig. But your welding is very good, most people couldn’t do that without a hell of a lot of practice. Enjoy watching your videos.
I've been looking to improve my welding and metalworking skills recently, haven't done anything of the sort in more than 10 years. I had been looking at this exact unit, and was wondering how it went, I think you've sold me on it hahaha

Thanks mate ,I'll be getting one. My old Unimig 210 is totally obsolete ,still a great welder for our old cars but this new Viper is 4 welders in one if you buy everything. Never had any problems with unimig even when I was working in panel shops . Exelent video, had to subscribe.

The TIG is super stable. I am a bit put out. I paid $2800 for a BOC TIG machine 20+ years ago. This machine cost $800 and would leave the BOC for dead. John
I’d love to see how it goas with aluminium, I’ve just bought a brandnew boat and want to make some changes, the guy at the local shop recommended the unimig 165 using the mig but I like the idea of tig. I’m guessing mig will be easier for tacking together the floor framing etc but maybe tig is better for where it’s seen 🤷🏻♂️ Love your videos mate straight down the line and no bullshit.
@@farminglifeaustralia6716 thanks mate I’ll check it out, I’m actually a boat builder but timber /composite, I’ve had a fair amount of experience welding stick and mig but just never aluminium. Something I’ve always wanted to do. Thanks again keep doin what your doin by far the best channel I’ve followed👍👍
@@D.s182 I have built a few boats planked timber steel fibreglass and a small 16foot aluminium one. I used the tig for making things like the dash and tanks etc and welded them in with the MIG. I have a Unimig 200 amp Tig now and that does a nice job on TIG. John
@@farminglifeaustralia6716 oh nice John, something special about traditional timber boat building, not many of us around anymore. Yeh I thought tig would come in handy for that stuff, I’ve only got 10amp power at home so kinda restricted to max 185 I believe. John did you find using a mig on aluminium , boat stuff did you have to worry about distortion at all?? I’m only welding light stuff like 1-3mm?
@@D.s182 I had built a boat in steel 36' and it was only 3 and 4 mill plate And it was perfectly fair. I understood back stepping the welds and tacking lightly then a bit more uniformly .etc, the other thing is to never have a flat surface unless it had to be, then use thicker material. I always put a 3% curve both ways to stop distortion so if you are doing the side of a boat make the stringers on the frames have a 3% curve across the plate. it will be curved the other way because of the shape of a conventional hull. John

I have found that multi anything generally sort😕 of works. Like those multi-tools that were all the rage a few years ago get you out of trouble but are not a pleasure to use like a dedicated tool. That is not the case with this machine. Works well on all functions and at a great price. John
JOHN after I see welding pr00n stich on 3:03 I can say, you are a welder for real, I mean it is thick material, but stich is like weld a PRO welder. HAT DOWN

Great video. I've lost count now how many times I've watched it. Setting up my 185 for Tig and just wanted to know if you can actually Tig weld aluminium with is unit, as I'm being told elsewhere, that you can't Tig weld aluminium with the Viper 185 ?
Hey John, thanks for the informative video! One question I have about this welder is how thick steel do you think it could comfortably gas less mig weld?
Not sure what the differences are on the functions mechanically but if you use the the “stick” function your tig torch becomes a lift start where as the “tig” function is a scratch start
Hi bud. Been watching a few of your vids. Have bought the same welder. Couple of questions 🙂 Do you prefer the spool gun Tig or the true Tig? And what is your true Tig torch model?
The spool gun is still MIG just fed from the spool gun not from the machine. I don't prefer one over the other its more a case of one is more suitable on some jobs than the other. My Tig torch model is 17 V 150 Amp 4 meter lead. John

I have a video with it on aluminium using a spool gun. All the aluminium boat builders I know of use MIG for construction.

I have never had a look at that. I will have a look and let you know. Aluminium has got that dear that it pretty much rules it out for us. John

If you do more than one pass any thickness. One pass 8mm easy. John

Not a lot different. wire sometimes called inershield and earth is usually positive not negative. John
