DIY No melt suet, no wheat flour

  • Wheat flour just doesn't sound right for birds. The no melt suet I find in the stores is a hard cake like material with no visible food, like sunflower seeds, within it. I tried to put together various alternatives to see if I could make no melt that actually looked like something my backyard birds would eat. Here's what I put in mine- your results may vary.
    3-4 cups of lard- not vegetable shortening
    1-2 cups of Crazy Richard's Peanut butter- no salt or sugar added
    2 cups of oatmeal flour
    2 cups of plain corn meal
    1 cup buckwheat flour
    2 cups rolled oats
    2 cups of black oil sunflower seeds
    2 cups of general bird seed
    2 cups of bird peanuts

    please do not use peanut butter for the birds it contains far to much salt for them use flutter butter which is made for birds , normal peanut butter will make the birds sick or worse

    Love your suet holder ideas. I made some suet for the first time last month. Never thought they would like it better than the store bought stuff, but they do. Found out last night that the racoon did too... I will be trying your recipe next batch for the upcoming summer. This week was my first time for putting out shelled peanuts and surprisingly, they have been a hit with the Chickadees and the nuthatches. I originally purchased them for the Bluejays. Thank you for such great videos, Your channel has been very inspirational. ❤️🐦

    You are the most dedicated feeder of birds I have seen. You have some excellent ideas! I love that you are withholding the wheat flour. Are you using organic (non-GMO) cornmeal? I don't know if there is a GMO buckwheat. I simply don't feed my birds grains to avoid the issue. I just feed them sunflower hearts, nut/fruit mixes, meal worms, and suet. I live in MN on a large lake with well forrested parks. My main goal is providing the birds with enough calories to ease them through the winter. I feed them all year long, but focus more on nutrition for egg laying & chick's in the Spring. Summer feeding is not because they need it, but simply because I enjoy their company. This is the first of your videos I have watched. Looking forward to future videos. Thanks.

    • @LSatch
      @LSatch  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for making my day! The cornmeal is from Bobs red mill and is organic. I think all the grain from that company is organic. Your homestead sounds beautiful. Like you I feed them year round because I like to. Happy New Year, hope 2024 brings you everything you wish for.

    What about the humidity in the summer? How do you deal with it?

    • @LSatch
      @LSatch  Před rokem

      In the summertime we don’t put out a many suet cakes at a time like we do in the winter. You just need to keep an eye out to make sure they don’t grow mold before they are eaten.

    Do you not have squirrels eating this? I live in SC. I battle squirrels all the time even using hot birdseed and safflower seed and they will even eat that. Very persistent. I love your different feeders - very natural! Love to hear your thoughts…

    • @LSatch
      @LSatch  Před rokem

      Yes we had squirrels. On my smart camera feeders I have squirrel baffles and they do a great job. They don’t however keep the raccoons off. I’m battling them right now trying to work out a solution. On my hanging feeders both raccoons a squirrels are a problem. I’ve been considering trying to feed the squirrels in a different place but I don’t think that will help at the bird feeders. As for the raccoons, we bring the feeders in at night. We do have one feeder that is “squirrel proof”, it uses springs to stay shut when a squirrel tries to get in it.
      Sorry I don’t have a better answer, if you or I could discover a way to keep the squirrel away, we’d quickly become millionaires!

    • @vickitaber4680
      @vickitaber4680 Před rokem +1

      @@LSatch it is a constant problem but I don’t want to set up a special spot for them as I don’t want to attract them. I do have some squirrel proof feeders so I guess will stick with that type.

      Yes, it's really easy. This one doesn't have the cage on the bottom but the jars are just the same.

    Is lard safe for birds ?

    • @LSatch
      @LSatch  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes. Some lard is better than others. The best lard has nothing added to it. Unfortunately the lard I used in this video had some additives to persevere it. I’m publishing a new video tomorrow that will update this recipe and taking this video down. Great question, thanks for asking
