1988 Chevy S10 Review

  • My thoughts on the 1988 Chevy S10 with the 2.8L v6 and 5 speed manual transmission:
The 1980’s were a magical time for cars and trucks. Emissions standards weren’t crippling engines, safety standards weren’t ruining our A pillars and dash boards, and auto manufactures had an obsession with angular shapes. Stacked on top of that, pickup trucks were at their best. No heated seats, no sunroofs, or 20 speaker sounds system. Just honest work horses made to do their job. If you take everything I’ve just said and put it in a blender, you get the Chevy S10.
After closing the door several times to finally latch it, I was transported back in time to when cars were better. I laid my eyes upon the dash and immediately fell in love. I remember the first time I had ever eaten a mozzarella stick, and the cheese oozed out of it, I fell in love. The gauges of the S10 are like a plate of mozzarella sticks. I loved them so much. They remind me of an old handheld game you’d play as a kid before smart phones. The big pieces of plastic with one color screens and would play one game like solitaire or electronic football. The tachometer almost became a game, begging you to set a new high score. I was surprised the fuel was measured in gallons, rather than points. But I digress, the S10 is more than just It’s gauges.
Driving an S10 is so easy. Easy to the point in which I mistakenly call it a car at multiple points in the review. Power steering makes the truck feel very light, and given the truck has been lowered, I was at eye level with other drivers. The transmission was more forgiving than an elastic waistband on thanksgiving night. Almost no throttle was needed to get the truck going. I genuinely loved driving this truck, something I didn’t expect when getting behind the wheel.
While I’ll get to the faults of the S10 in a second, reliability was not a fault. This truck had 328,00 miles on it, with the stock powertrain. If that isn’t a testament to the reliability, I’m not sure what is.
The only fault I see with the S10, isn’t a problem that can be fixed. The fault is that there are no trucks these days being made like this S10 was made. Trucks these days have the features of Cadillac’s, and are priced similarly as well. The S10 is basic. It has a job and it does it well, without any extra fluff.

As an everyday s10 driver, they're a,aging small trucks that last forever, mines a 1986 with 103,000 and the motor was swapped at 65,000 according to previous owner, they're easy to fix and maintain, but I love the feel when it drives, and how relaxed you can be when driving

i love how down to earth the review was. I can respect the fact that you arent some power junkie saying "oh well it needs a v8. it needs moar power, it needs to drive faster" you were just like. yeah. its a truck. it paid a debt to society, now its a cruiser. 2.8? it sounds nice. like ive never heard such an honest take on one of these old trucks.

My first vehicle. When I was 16 I drove it over a flooded road. Water was deep enough, I could hear the fan blades splashing the water. Powered through it in first gear with the pedal to the floor. It was also rolled over, the cab was out of shape after that. The back window became what we called "convertible".

The first new vehicle I ever bought. I fell in love with it , it was a 1988 Tahoe 2wd I drove it for 12 years and got hit by other drivers 14 times. Yes 14 times lol. Each time I got her fixed and she kept on rolling.
I decided to upgrade to a full size GMC Sierra 4wd that I still own.
I’m now looking for a S10 to restore.

I'm old enough to be your dad, but I was younger than you are when I fell in love with S10s. It's cool to me to see your generation appreciating older stuff. I love your enthusiasm about the features of this truck, and laughed out loud at your Whole Foods comment! 😂 Thank Colin for me for letting you review his truck!!

This was my first vehicle and learned how to drive in the dead of winter. Pops thought if I could learn to drive a manual in the winter I could drive in anything and he wasn't wrong. I loved this truck so much and I wish I could find another for my son to learn on.

I had an ‘86 S10 as a first truck. It was a good truck. I had to basically rebuild it from the ground up at 125,000 miles because it had a rough life.

Ever since being 17 in highschool with a 91 Chevy S10 as my first car, I'm known now for that lil white S10 because I managed to stuff 10 people in the truck to go to McDonald's for lunch. It was an extended cab. It finally died after a very long time. I now have an 89 and a 92. With digital cluster swap and all black/charcoal grey interior. Both are getting ready for paint. I'm 21 now but I sure love these little trucks , easy to work on too! Great beginner car and easy to mod , just expensive.

I missed this one six years ago along with the SVT review. I had one of these (with the four speed auto) at the same time as my mom had the Contour. I had a love/hate relationship with the thing. No ABS ruined it in the end, but it was my first car.

Super job man. Loved all the comments. I have a lowered 93 2.8 5 speed with 240k. Body Super straight, no scratches or dents. Still original 14s. It is an extra cab, or bonus cab...not sure the correct name? Still in the project stage. My dream is to build a smoking little 302 for high end. Was thinking maybe a 383 striker...but the low to mid torque might be too much for the original drive train. Thanks again for makin it real!!!

“Emission standards weren’t crippling engines”? You’re kidding right? Early 80s was the worst for emission controls. That and the switch to unleaded fuel killed horsepower. The early 80s sucked for any kind of performance. Even corvettes only had like 200hp on a good day. That S10 v6 only has about 125hp and its a late 80s! Trust me I was there. Not hating just pointing it out. Great review though, really. I always liked the 1st gen S10. I bought one brand new in 1987! Subscribed!
