This was many many decades before I was born, but I have always loved the way they talked back then. Much more refined and classy than most people talk today.
I remember watching this series as a young boy and falling in love with Annette. Even at this age she was a pretty darn good actress and she had that special charisma few people have. What a wonderful role model for an entire generation. This series gave me insight on how to treat others. Thank you so much for uploading this.
Those milkshakes and sundaes look so good and made me and still make me hungry! just noticed that nobody pays for anything in the malt shop, it's a miracle they stay open!
When I saw this in the seventies as a young teen I thought that backwards tap/clap sequence by Sharon/Kitty was the absolute bomb (as in very good and very cool), even if it was a simple thing. I then danced Lindy for sixteen years (not that I was ever as good as Sharon is here, and certainly not as adorable) and never remembered to throw that in. Now my nervous system is trashed and no more dancing for me, but these old clips still bring back fond memories!
I really like this show and this was way before my time. watched some interviews earlier of Annette Funicello she gave later in life. A real fine lady. RIP, Annette...
And I think the worst thing is that no one is sticking up for Annette when Laura's present. They wait until she's gone to tell Annette they like her and don't think she took it. What a bunch of cowards! 1
We tend to remember it that way. TV in the 50s was rarely reality-based. Most of it was designed to allow people to escape from the real world into one of picture perfect settings. Disney was famous for such television and movies.
They were there to entertain us and not indoctrinate you into a particular thinking. Unless setting a good example and showing the wrong way to act was considered indoctrination.
I was 8-years old back in 1958 when the show first started in the 3rd season of the MM Club. I am amazed now at how these teenagers acted so mature and adult like, all the time. My how the times have changed. As a child, I must have paid attention mostly to the MM Club cartoons.
As a former dancer, I can say for a fact that the soft shoe routine that you see Sharon and Rudy do isn't easy. They made it look easy because they were good at it.
Sharon Baird (Kitty in the series) was taking dancing lessons at 3 and was performing by age 5. A talented singer and dancer, Baird was considered to be the best dancer of the Mousketeers. This is evidenced by the soft shoe routine (tap dancing done without the metal taps) done in this episode.
I was 11 years old when I watched this show. loved it, Especially Spin & Marty. I had such a crush on Tim Considine and wrote him a fan letter. Never mailed it tho..lol. I fashioned my self after Annette..she was so sweet and pretty ..and a great role model for young girls like me..Not like the young girls today who all look, dress and act 10 years older than they are!
I love how from 9:10 to 9:15 Steven says his mother is supervising sandwiches being made. Supervising. As in she's not making them. The servants/maids are making them and she's just watching. As if this ideal 1950s town of Ashford couldn't be any more picture perfect, apparently the families are so affluent that the wives and mothers don't even have to lift a finger to do the simplest tasks. I wish I could crawl into the screen and stay there!
It's a shame Disney hasn't gained the smarts to release the old Mickey Mouse Club and Disneyland episodes on DVD/Blu-Ray; they'd make a huge profit in a short amount of time! The folks who got to watch the shows in their childhood would like a trip down Memory Lane, the Disney fans who missed out on these shows would love to see the behind-the-scenes stuff in the episodes, and it'd cost a whole lot less to clean up and re-release these episodes than make more Waverly Place crap!
People tend to stay in their own social circles based on wealth, social status, popularity, etc.. That's why you see all of the rich kids together and why Mike and Jet, who were raised on a farm, weren't in their "crowd." Annette, who was a farm girl before coming to Ashford, tried to change that. It's implied that the less-affluent kids also hung out in their own groups, but you don't see that in the series.
I grew up Navy. There were divisions between the kids. The officer's kids & the enlisted kids. We lived in different parts of the base and had our own group of friends. About the only time we were in the same place was on the bus on the way to school.
WAS life really ever as simple as this.....or do we just remember it that way? Well I'd like to discuss it, really I would....but I have to go supervise some sandwich making right now.
Sharon Baird and Bibby Burgess (not in this show)were probably the best dancers of all the Mousketeers. In fact, on a reunion show, there was a special platform just for them.
I love Sharon Baird! She is a fantastic dancer! Before MMC she appeared in a film called Bloodhounds of Broadway. She did a routine with Mitzi Gaynor. She was also Judy the Frog in H.R. Pufnstuf. And MMC reunion show is also on CZcams:)
Bobby Bugess grew tall and Sharon remained dainty. Eventually they looked like a skyscraper next to a Barbie dream house. Still, with very uneven heighths they never missed a beat.
Being that they were kids at the time, you know there had to tremendous jealously toward Annette by the other Mouseketeers. Truth is that she wasn't the most talented child of the bunch, but because she was so "cute and adorable," she received special privileges like her own serial on the show. That couldn't have set well with the other kids.
That's not true the only one who was jealous of Annette's popularity was Darlene Gillespie. According to Mouseketeer Lonnie she and her father use to give Annette a hard time. The other '' mice '' all liked Annette. Her best friends on the show were Sharon, Doreen and Cheryl.
It's typical Disney, and typical TV of the 50s: producers knew that the audience watched TV to escape from their reality into the fantasy worlds such as he created. That's why most TV of the 50s featured such "picture perfect" settings. In this day of reality TV, where most viewers will change channels if there isn't a sexual innuendo or punch thrown every 10 seconds, such a show would (sadly) get hooted off the air.
I'm sorry but that housekeeper would be fired immediately she acts as if that household is hers the way she seems to boss everyone especially the man of the house who says nothing. That would never fly in my home yet it seems that's how they were in tv shows, this one the brady bunch etc. Absolutely absurd.
Isn't Annette's friend the girl who had a crush on Dobie Gillis? I like how Annette says she "called her on it" I thought that was a more modern phrase but guess not (its from poker I would assume)... I love how the necklace drama stretches over several episodes
Rudy Lee had a lot of acting experience but didn't have much prior dancing experience: he worked hard to learn what he performed. Sharon Baird had plenty of dancing and acting experience before she even joined the Mouseketeers. Lee was chosen as Baird's love interest because he was close to her in height; none of the male Mousketeers (except Cubby O'Brien, who was too young for the role) qualified.
I don't know the song name, but you can start by searching; *Elliot Brothers and the Disneyland Dance Niters*. Trust me, they were a wicked good swing band. Once I discovered Annette singing live at Disney After Dark on You Tube I just had to find out who was the the guy screaming on tenor sax and leading this swingin' band. When Uncle Walt went for pro talent, he went for pro talent. The kids were not pros for the most part, but his studio bands were top shelf. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is if the MMC studio band and The Elliot Brothers are one and the same.
polite teens, no tattoos, dread locks, hoodies, multi colored hair stripes, no bad language, no drugs, no sex and no social media ! No diversity which is really odd to see.
While Tim Considine's delivery sounds a bit like John Wayne's, Jet's is a poorer imitation in a female version. Aside from her mediocre acting, she talks like a cowboy, or more like a "butch" old woman. Not very appealing to boys. Such dialog was delivered with skill by Mary WIckes, who is Katie in this serial. It is apparent that Jet may be just as much a snob as the "upper class" girls she avoids. Annette is the open minded one who bridges the gap, and is the one with real class.
Wow, Aunt Lila's kind of a hag. "JET!!....Annette... you need to have lunch with Val & Moselle." Subtext is..... "In a better class of people. Jet's a not good enough she's chicken & hens poor, Annette." Gotta love rich Aunt Lila. LOL. P.C.
Let us not forget, that in the background, behind this placidity, coming at us like an out of control, breaknecked speeding Frieght Trane was . . . . . ELVIS PRESLEY .

That's a tough call for a number or reasons. First, WHO is the audience at this point in time? Most today have a problem, "relating" to a culture from 60 years ago, and quickly dismiss it as "fake." They have no interest or curiosity about what came before they were born. They refuse to believe that there was a time when people were more civil than they are today. It's unfortunate that people have become more narrow-minded, dare I say, ignorant than in the past, in spite of all of the opportunities to be more enlightened about the world than what was available decades ago.

I really like Uncle Archie....he treats Annette so graciously and he is so understanding...I really live his personality.
Love his personality.
Annette is too much of a lady to put up with that childish nonsense.

You should send the letter today. He would probably get a kick out of it.
Turtles Run ..lol..After so many years, I think he'd be worried I was some sicko stalker!
Just Me - I think I will have my kids write a fan letter to Roberta “Laura “ Shore. We all like to watch these episodes together.
Just Me - I still think you should send it. 😀
Turtles Run ..Nahhh..not the same feeling as I had at 11.... But thanks for the encouragement!! LOL
How does this Malt Shop stay open, nobody pays for anything. This was a great series when it first aired, I wouldn't miss any especially Spin & Marty
That's the late fifties/ early 60's for ya!
How I miss those days.

I 've wondered that, too, why the kids were even eating lunch and they hadn't even attended a few classes before even lunch?

steady is always flat out insulting Kitty But he seems so hot to always get in a dance with her - what a dork
Steady’s only into food and chick fights.
Love this show
cool how they don't need to lock their lockers at school
Milk shake and Sundae is almost $10 today crazy
That's what I was thinking What is up with her aunt thinking Jet isn't good enough?
I too was 15 and started the 10th grade

me too =)
Annette forgot to take the striped napkin off her neck.
She was so pretty!
2:24 - "scummy insinuation."

At approximately 0:55 Annette leave her table to tell the poorly educated Laura Logan, at approximately 1:00, who is seated with two other girls,: "You're not insinuating that any of us took your necklace."

Steady Ware and Sharon Bear dance nicely together. What is the name of that song?

@disneyclint That's the general idea.

I disagree. Jet was the best actress. Katie was a rude, ugly, insolent old minger who would never hold down a housekeepers job.
At approximately 9:45 Steady tells Kitty, who is played by Sharon Baird,: "Hey my favorite record. Let's dance." According to my point of view they dance very well.

Are Steady and Kitty midgets?
No,silly one, they are height challenged. Sharon is barely 5' and Steady is probably 5'5", but still has time to get taller. But, please, be nice.
@@janeiwasduncan8463 Steady was an idiot. Jet Maypen was the best character. She should have punched Laura more.

@@BlackPDigitalMedia Yes! I thought that too. lol!
The brothers fell out over a woman they were both interested in, but I see your point about Lila's attitude.
Not sure about Steady, but Kitty (Sharon Baird), was quite short. 5 feet even. Not a midget, though.
Sharon Baird is 4’9”
