I've grown Moonflowers twice. Soaking them overnight also works well:)-John in Texas
People who know: 💀 people who don’t know: 🤩😍😲
I've learned from the comments that some may be using this plant for psychoactive purposes. I thought the apprehension by many to grow this was due to the toxicity of this plant, which arguably is not as high as people think. Consumption is not illegal, and albeit somewhat dangerous, if it makes folks happy I hope this helps them out as well 😂
Ive always wanted to grow these, not because i necessarily like them but rather by the time they are adults i can consume them to sleep forever
Admiring their beauty as the night pollinators enjoy them may make you feel better!
Right on, I collected seeds and wasn't sure how to plant them. I appreciate your work!
They can be a paim to germinate. They produce so many seeds because most don't make it. I must have dropped one on my driveway and it grew great in compacted gravel.
Nice beautiful job Watching from California I got new ideas and I love your videos
Great video. Also I love that husky work table you’ve got in that video lol
Moon flower seeds are very hardy…I started 6 in small containers and they all came up and are healthy. Beautiful plant!
Mine reseed readily. Ill throw a few around to make sure they cover everywhere
This reminds me of the way I deal with Canna seeds. I use a sander pad on my Dremel to rough off edge to get to the white under the shell, then the really hot water.
Just bought some moonflowers! My daughter wanted to try to plant them this summer. We’re in NY so hopefully they germinate for me. And your video was very informative. Thank you 😍🥰 absolutely beautiful. I’m just a beginner lol
A squirrel nibbled on the green fruit that followed the flower. It staggered 17 feet, convulsed, and died on the spot. Wouldn't recommend them for salads, but awesome in the garden!!
CMIIW, but this plant is quite toxic. but some people use it to get high.
It affected the squirrel that fast??? I've heard that people who take it for psychoactive effects may not feel anything for up to 2 hours after consumption.
Thx you! Moved in with a friend who has tons of plants. He brings all the large pots into the garage during the winter, brings them back out in the spring. After 20 yrs of everything coming back this yr only 4 plants iut of 30 cane back. He gv his lowes card & said but what you want to replace all that didnt return. I spent $600 on small plants, soil. I did put fresh soil on top of some of the planters w/o growing plants, watered, hoping nutrients would inspire some to pop up. To my knowledge nothing returned. After everything i planted grew tall, some on trellises, some not. My sister claims a moon flower was popping up alongside of 1 i had planted. I dont remember seeing it however i do pull out weeds etc ebery couple of wks. Ive heard this story 3x already so i sent off for moon flower seeds. Theyve now been clip & are soaking in warm water. It is the 2nd wk of june in zone 8 NW Mississippi. Im praying i can pop them in the dirt tomo to put an end to "you killed the moon plants" i pray all 50 seeds take off like wildfire! If so i intend to buy trellises. 🤞 heres to redeeming myself while outshining their measley plant that wasnt so easily identifiable 😂
I'm about to create a new bed for my moons. I've seen these things growing along highways. They will grow in any conditions! Mine are Datura Innoxia. Bush type. They die back every year but self seed. Unfortunately my original patch got overtaken by quack grass so I'm starting fresh. These tips were implemented and I have a bunch coming up! Good luck! This is something I grew as a small child from seeds given to us by farmers in the family so it's cool to keep the memories alive and watch the hummingbird moths enjoy them at night
I plant my seedlings in a big deep pot…..with mulch. They go crazy wonderful….once they take off. They get morning, early afternoon sun…..but late afternoon is too hot on my deck. So I shade them then…..but the flowers open offering their fragrance around 5pm. Their lovely big white blooms are so very beautiful!! Summers are hotter here in Atlanta than they used to be. So I plant the moonflower seedlings for earlier daily sun….but protecting the vine briefly after 5pm.
Ahna. Atlanta, Ga
Mine were actually growing on the north side of my house so barely got any sun. They still did great. I think they enjoy a bit of shade
I have two. One makes double purple blooms and the baby one, which isnt so baby anymore lol has been producing white blooms and purple blooms. The leaves look different as well, but both plants have flowers facing upwards. I love these plants!!!
There are many different types. Some have been saying mine aren't "moon flowers" but moonflower is a generic term for Datura varieties. These are my favorite because I used to grow these as a kid with seeds from family members on a farm in Indiana
Thank you my darling . Blessings .
Thanks for watching! I hope you grow these and enjoy the beautiful night blooms
Old Matchbox add sand paper inside facing in and shake up the seeds within... very easy and effective
That was a great video. We planted some of these about 2 weeks ago here in Texas and waiting for the sprouting to begin.
For GOD so Loved the world, that HE Gave HIS Only Begotten SON, that whosoever Believeth in HIM should not perish but have Everlasting Life.

I love this plant. I bought a small one at a gardening show. It’s huge now and has had some amazing white flowers! I have many seed pods. I’m wondering if I can cut it back because it has covered my sidewalk and we have to walk around it. The original stalk is thick and not growing flowers or stems around it now, but further out.
Datura are annual and did from frost where I am at. They will reseed themselves when the pods crack open. The vining moonflowers I am not sure about
Mine are not invasive, but they can be if I let them throw their seeds every year! I pick the seedheads off before they mature. I do leave some so they can volunteer the following year. They will come back next year. And they do not need any special soaking or babying. These seeds are so prolific, they do their own thing. I have tons of plants that come back every year. They reseed prolifically.
Mine usually do but this year the drought made them pop up very late. I will probably have to sow some next year to compensate. Still have hot days left so we'll see!
Moonflowers are gonna grow.
I found a few of the round spikey pods under these beautiful flowers around downtown Rochester, Mi, and I took 2. I didn’t know how to plant them, but by now they have opened up to tiny seeds. It’s September, so should I keep them until next year?
These plants were gorgeous! One stem with an umbrella of green foliage and white flowers coming out! Wow! I’m glad I “stole” two seeds, but there were more.
Plant them in the spring after danger of frost. I planted mid some mid June and they actually caught up to ones I planted in May. The warmer soil makes them pop up faster. Clip the seed coating and soak 24 hours before planting and the germination rate is really good. Mine are all huge now
@@FastGardeningMichigan Wow! Thank you for answering all my questions!
😂 not encouraging your theft 😂 but this will be my first go. I got them in water hoping to sprout as I type. They do look beautiful. They say they are very toxic to us and animals though 😮. Risk taker. You better not judge me plant thief 😂.
@@cass77788 same plant. It has multiple names. Devils trumpet and and thorn apples are other names. Sometimes people will call it an angels trumpet, but thats a different plant. Known as brugmansia, same family also poisonous containing the same alkaloids. But the flowers hang down and don't point up.
I like your shovel
Can't remember what shovel it is but it's gone lol. Likely under inches of woodchips somewhere thanks to a kid that likes to dig and leave things out 😂
Hello! I'm in Michigan and I have mine in pots. I'm wondering because it's September, do I stop watering? I have 8 seed pods. I want to collect them when they are brown i understand.
Keep watering. They will die back naturally when the weather turns
And best of all the seeds are really tasty! Wait why are there shadow people in my room???
When I made this I didn't realize people use this for psychedelic effects. I just thought everyone enjoyed pretty night flowers as much as me
@@FastGardeningMichigan that's understandable. Some of us, myself included, probably stumbled across your video after watching datura trip report videos. Despite all the jokes, datura is not a fun experience and is not a psychedelic, it's considered a deliriant. While something like shrooms or LSD produces pretty visuals like patterns and colors, this (along with diphenhydramine/Benadryl) produces vivid hallucinations that seamlessly integrate into reality and people often forget they even took anything and act on these hallucinations. Highly not recommended!
The white part on the seeds looks like they are already sprouting. Are they? Because the ones i just got from someone in a green seedpod, look like they are sprouting. Can they be planted in September/October so they will come up in the spring?
When I soak my seeds I notice a white pulp like area swell. Ideally seed pods should be left until they turn brown and start to split. Green pods are not fully mature. They can be sown in fall or winter. That's what the plants do. They self sow vigorously. I like to let them self sow, but also save seeds to plant myself to make sure I get plants in case the weather is funky. This year mine did not come back on their own but seeds I planted did grow.
Thank you for the info! I just put my seeds in water and was wondering about some of them floating. I have a baseball field on my property and I hate looking at the backstop so I want to grow these all along the backstop since they shouldbe deer resistant. Are the vines hard to take down each fall? I’m wondering if I’ll struggle with that at the tallest part of the backstop. Last year I grew green beans, which was super fun, but the deer got to them a lot so I had to share 😂 thank you for such great information!
This version is Datura Innoxia. They are a bushing type that can grow 4 feet tall. I'm about to start a new patch.
Yes this isn't the vine type. More of a bush so it won't grow up your backstop.
Great video. Are you still offering the Moonflower seeds for sale? I would be interested if you are.
Hi thanks for this video, very informative, I am trying to grow Datura from seeds that my friend gave me but so far I am unsuccessful.
Scoring the seeds and soaking helps a lot. They grow great when the plant seeds itself naturally, but trying to get them to grow on purpose is tough. I think the seeds have time to soften up over winter when it naturally seeds. Scoring and soaking mimic that
These are my seeds Im in Ok and started them 2 bweeks ago with out clipping them lol im hopping there coming up and they make it. I cant tell what sprouts are which lol I have seeds from my gift plant 2003 and planets them one in 2017 may and they got massive tall wide spread such pretty white flowers wayt better then first plant back in 2003. I this year planted them in march ughh lol I have lots of seeds im going to get a few pots and clip the seeds and try that i didnt understand what clipping the seed was about really since most videos on are not these i the seeds as you in this video lol most videos have those othere seeds that are fat lol Thank you good info.
They will still germinate without clipping. Just speeds it up. They just need moisture to soften them up. They have low germination rates so the more you sow the better!
I just received vine cuttings with green pods. I'm in region 7. How do I get started?
Once the pods are dried and start to split on their own the seeds are ready. Ideally its best to let this occur on the plant. The seeds prefer warm weather to germinate. You can score the outer coating like in the video, let them soak in warm water for 24 hours, or both. Plant 1/8"-1/4" under soil when daytime temps are in the 70s. I like to sow them thick then thin later because not all seeds will germinate.
I planted sum this spring for the first time and my seed pods haven't gotton brown yet or fallin off here in Tulsa we've had a couple hard freezes so should I cut the pods off and let them dry out inside and how do I take care of the plant for winter I'm in zone 7a ?
I leave the pods on the plant until they start to split showing the seeds are ready. I have never tried drying green pods. This type of datura is innoxia and it is an annual, but they self sow vigorusly.
@@jannanewbolt8553 only if you eat them. If you have pets they should be watched. Chipmunks eat mine sometimes and are OK. I've been poked by the pods to where I bleed and haven't had problems.
@@FastGardeningMichigan maybe that's y I don't have squirrels in my yard anymore Lol Thank you
I would like to get some moonflower seeds from you if possible I've tried the ones that you get at the store they don't work I used to have a beautiful Moon flower garden years ago that I got from the seeds come on the plant and I think they do better than the ones you buy
I only have a handful left and only a few of mine are coming up so far so I may need to sow them. I may not even have any for next year! Drought has been bad for seed sprouting
Which datura is pictured here? I found one and took a pod from it and it looked just like that one with the rounder, oval shaped leaves. Just wanna know which one i have.
I believe it's Innoxia. Came with the house. It's bushing, not vining.
The one I found was bushing as well. And the pod looks identical. I just saw that the other daturas had jagged leaves except for metel. But they don't have thorny pods.
@@UncleWintersDisdain. Innoxia is a common ornamental variety. Probably what you have as well. Not many people favor the vining ones
Maybe moon flower seed mold is beneficial like with the mold on my tomato seeds
Have you ever eaten the seeds? I ate a pods worth once. Probably about 300 seeds. I was in another dimension for 3 days
@@FastGardeningMichigan No doubt! That was a one and done experience for me. I just like to hear the stories from others who have done it
The seeds I ordered were huge like corn kernels. They came up in like 3 days.
There are many types of Datura. The Innoxia in this video have hundreds of small seeds in each pod
I have an adult moonflower..how big of a hole, and how deep do I have to plant it?
The moon flower i have grows seeds the size of a adult tooth.... The seed your cracking in the video looks like Rosella plant seeds
These are Datura. There are many different types of moonflower. These are not vining either. They grow a 3.5' tall bush
Is this datura the same as angels trumpet????
Angel's Trumpet is a tropical variety of Datura. Datura covers many of the moonflowers
The seeds taste like walnut but don't eat them only if you want to skip a day or 2 from your life...
Here in zone six, these plants are perennials. be careful with them, because the sap is hallucinogenic.
How do you take it? 😋
Those seeds will send you on a 1- 3 day trip. You'll have a party with people you will only be able to see make sure you have access to plenty of water.
I've read that these are poisonous, but can i still use them as indoor houseplants?
@@FastGardeningMichiganIm thinking of growing them outdoors and then taking some inside to put in vases or maybe pots, but i've read that they could be poisonous and even cause halloucinations, so im questioning if they are safe to use as decor. Because of the potential risks of having it in your home.
@@aronsjaastad1192 mine stab me all the time and I don't get a bad reaction. Just something you don't want you or your peta eating. The Asiatic beetles must be immune because they eat it. As far as I know it only lasts one season but readily self seeds. People complain it's almost invasive but removing the pods before they open prevents self seeding.
I wouldn't try to grow these as house plants. They are large, require a lot of sunlight, and they give off vapors of the toxins present, which can damage the nervous system.
I’m looking for these seeds. I iive in Georgia. Is anyone willing to mail me some?
I sold a lot and have a minimal amount left. I'm going to grow them out and get a bunch of seeds. If you can't find any this year I'll have some for next season
If you eat the seeds you can take a long trip and never leave your property
how did you know it is called datura
I've been growing these for nearly 30 years. Family from Indiana gave us seeds when I was a kid. I was excited to see them already growing at the house I purchased
Reading comments of it being poisonous?? So these will kill my chickens ?
If they eat them they will get sick. Chickens are pretty smart though. I throw stuff they shouldn't eat into their chicken run to compost and they don't eat what they don't like
I'll try to explain as best I can.. Because I'm currently researching this due to a toxicity case that I'm researching.
Moon Flower; Datura seeds are highly toxic to humans in high doses. High dose can be from 1 to 20 seeds because the strength is not measurable and varies greatly per seed, pod and plant. The hallucination effect occurs from these seeds; high heart rate, sweating, reality is switched to a different environment or scenery which causes wandering and babble into dangerous locations. The case I'm researching right now someone ate 1 seed and died. Do not eat them, do not let your animals eat them, especially mammals. Many stories exist about this awesome but dangerous plant. People ending up in the hospital for 2 days and with life long mental disorders, to people dying from wandering into situations. Terrible to consume.
Eat it
Anyone make tea from the seeds? Delicious
@@FastGardeningMichiganif you're very careful you can survive it easily but from what I've heard it's not a pleasant experience. It's a hallucinogen, similar to LSD or psilocybin, but that's where the similarities end. You'll experience lifelike hallucinations indistinguishable from reality, often of a violent or disturbing nature, your mouth will be dryer than the sahara desert, you'll be unable to pee, and you'll likely be delirious for 3 days straight.
If you've heard of what benadryl can do in excess (there was an incredibly dumb "benadryl challenge" circulating on tiktok), this is basically the same effect. It is an acetylcholine receptor antagonist which is where the deliriant properties come from.
5 b
you can just soak them over night and they burst!
The seeds also make a good snack!
@@desertsurvival8235 it was one of the worst experiences of my life but maybe if I do a lower dose and look up how to pee on on it
@@pxtixntzero7127 no it’s just an awful drug just take hallucinogens like the rest of us
Yeah, I love eating them at work. Really good for when you're driving as well!
I got these at Walmart. In a package they never gave me flower
Were they vining or bushing? These are the bushing type. Grow from seeds.
I got mine from Walmart and the did bloom into large flowers, but the vines were everywhere including up the trees. I'll try the bushing type next year and cut the pods off before they self seed,
@@1pmitch datura innoxia is this bush type. Mine get 3 to 4 feet tall and require no support.
This isn’t what I’m growing lol, I was looking for the moon flower vines
There are many types of moonflowers. This Datura variety is a bush. I imagine the growing process is very similar except vining would need trellising
he is showing Angel trumpet vine NOT moon flower!! Very different seed. Flowers are similar but plants have different characteristics.
It's datura innoxia. Called moonflower like the other daturas. Moonflower is not a scientific name.
Hahaha!
The Devils apple.
Are they not poisons 🙂
@@FastGardeningMichigan this means if you touch seeds bare hands. It will not harm?
@@mz7640 I've touched the plant and seeds with bare hands, I've been poked by the pods to the point of bleeding and I've never had an issue. I think you need to ingest a decent quantity to have ill effect.
"We don't wanna cut all the way through, we just wanna put a little pressure on it." Proceeds to cut all the way through and then acts as if there was still a piece attached
a datura is not a moonflower it is of the nightshade family and hallucinogenic....A moonflower is not a bush it is a vine with heart shaped leaves and is part of the morning glory famly. Datura has tiny seeds, moonflowers have huge thick big tan colored seeds....This is not a moonflower but a jimson weed!! You are very wrong please research this
Datura is the genus. These are Datura Innoxia. The Datura genus is often called moon flower because they are night bloomers. There are many Daturas. These are bush type but just as toxic as the rest. As long as you don't eat them you're fine.
Those are not moon flowers, those are trumpet plants. I have both. Moon plants are done differently. Just saying. Google Trumpet plants.
Datura innoxia and the other Daturas are called moonflower as the slang name.
@FastGardeningMichigan I wish they wouldn't 😂. The moonflower is a vine. The flower actually blooms in the evening and has a very nice smell.
These plants are evil. So pretty yet so evil.
I think they're awesome! The toxicity throws people off. The only things that eat mine are chipmunks and asiatic garden beetles
@@FastGardeningMichigan they’re a deleriant, things like this give literally the worst trip imaginable. Pretty but evil
Explain the evil. I'm learning about them and I know they supposed to be toxic. It it not worth it.
It is not worth it, Datura is not anything like hallucinogens it’s a deliriant that’s potency and toxicity is incredibly variable if you want to trip to take shrooms or something
@Venimoso I've got an idea. How about you NOT ingest poisonous things LOL! Maybe its this idea of chasing a new trip that's evil?
Nice beautiful job Watching from California I got new ideas and I love your videos
I plant moonflowers with moring glories together, they cover my whole porch and climb all the way to the top and I have flowers in the moring and night with the combo.
Nice!
Your Datura climb? Or you planted Ipomea alba?
Make tea from the seed....LMAO.
I’m soooooo going to do this! Great idea. ❤️🌱
