    I love my 2014 Volt, but with most love relationships, there is the bitter part as well. At around 110k miles, an annoying whistling sound from the engine occurred, which after 3 failed attempts by the dealership in fixing it, turned out to be a bad crankcase seal that was whistling. I also had the same issue mentioned in the video about the battery. The support beams on both sides of the windshield are quite thick because of the airbags, so you have to crane your head when turning corners or driving through parking lots to make sure you are not going to hit something or someone. All came to and end yesterday when I was rear ended pretty hard by an inattentive driver. I walked away with no more than a sore neck, which speaks to the safety of the car. I’m buying another used Volt when I get the insurance money.

    Found your video as I'm considering buying a used Chevy Volt to replace my 2007 Jeep Patriot (currently with 196K miles on it). The Volt's used price is tempting compared to other EVs. The range sounds poor, however it's way less expensive than other EVs & better than 100% fossil fuel like my Jeep. Thanks for making this!

    • @electricchris
      @electricchris  Před 5 lety +2

      You can’t beat the price of a used Chevy Volt! Depending on your commute you can drive most of your time in EV mode. I only use the gas motor when driving on trips out of town.

    I just bought my cpo 2017 volt almost 2 weeks ago and i love it! The loudness of the motor surprised me because i did a 200 road trip the day after i got it and it was loud but i had my family so couldn’t play music, two days later i took a 500 mile trip by myself and I didn’t mind at all. Great car!

    • @electricchris
      @electricchris  Před 4 lety +1

      Kat H. That’s usually how I drive. I use the electric to get me to the highway and then use hold when driving highway speeds. If I have any electricity left on my way home., for example 10 miles left, then I make sure to turn on the electric motor when I at least 10 miles from home so I use all of the electricity. Obviously you don’t have to try that hard to be as efficient as possible with this car.

  • @Daedgeman
    @Daedgeman Před 5 lety +13

    I have a 2012 Volt and I don't find the range extender loud at all. I think that since I do 95% of my driving in EV mode it does sound "loud" in comparison to the electric only mode. If the radio is on I can barely notice the range extender coming on.

    Bought a used 2017 Volt with low mileage, such a deal. Total cost of ownership per mile is less than $1.00 ((monthly car payment + monthly insurance + electricity + gas / monthly miles driven).
    When you own a Chevy Volt the world of driving changes. You tend to see how far you can go without using gas, how far you can go on a charge. The difficult choice is determining how long you go between oil changes. Some Volt owners change their oil every year, while others, change their oil every two years.

      GMs brilliant creation unfortunately didn't allow for them to market it to the car buying public. It's a complicated but reliable machine, so much so that many regard and call it a plug in HYBRID, which it is not. It is an electric car with a gasoline engine driven generator; much like a diesel rail locomotive (without the traction battery, of course). I only buy gas for my '15 before a long trip, which is almost never.

    I'm looking at 2011 Volts and I'm curious what your thoughts are about paying more for lower mileage getting close to 50,000 from a used car dealership vs about 90,000 from a private owner. There are a few reasons I am more interested in the private owner, in addition to price. What are your thoughts on the significance of the mileage for the volt, considering longevity and maintenancing? It seems like it can become an expensive car to fix when there are problems, however, outside of an accident, I get the impression that problems are few. Then again these cars are getting older....

      Not quite. That bypass is for when the fob battery dies. But before it does, the little screen display will alert you that it's nearing replacement time. If your 12v battery is kaput, there is a "jump start" procedure to follow.

      You can charge the battery while using gas. It’s called mountain mode but it’s for driving over mountains where you will need the extra power of using the gas motor and electric motor together. Using the gas motor to charge the electric motor means the gas motor will be less efficient and use more gasoline.
