The first time I watched Top Gun was with my dad and right after Goose died, while we were both trying not to sob, my dad goes "You're gonna see Tom Cruise in his underwear in a second here".
Edwards was the only one of the actors that came to our premiere (military) in San Diego. He stood at the back of the theater and shook all of our hands at the end of the pic. Class act.

Let's say it was 29 yrs ago, that would make it 2015. This would also align with something that someone noticed. One of the motorcycles Mav is using in TG:M was first manufactured in 2015. If Rooster was born 1982 and TG:M takes place 2015, he would be 33 yrs old during the movie.
