- In this video I'm discussing various bedding options for guinea pigs. I have tried various types of bedding over the years, but I mostly focus on my top 3 choices in this video:
1. Vet Bed:
This is my all time favourite bedding. In my optinion it's the best bedding for guinea pigs. However there are some drawbacks which make it unfortunately unsuitable for me as an owner for the majority of my cage.
2. Easibed
This is a dust free wood fibre bedding typically used for horses. It's very soft and very absorbend. It's what I'm using at the moment and I get it from a local farm feed shop.
3. Fleece
Most of you will be familiar with fleece as bedding. It has many advantages and I used it for a number of years. One of the main reason I stopped using it is that it seems to cause eye issues for one of my skinny pigs.
I have personally used each of these three types of bedding and favour them above other types. The one I would recommend the most is vet bed. It's amazing stuff and even after many years still my favourite.

About the herd:
The Guinea Pig Herd consists of 11 female guinea pigs who all live together in a custom build enclosure in our dining room. They can jump out of their cage at all times and free range across our house. Our youngest guinea pig is 6 months old, our oldest ones are getting close to 5. All of our guinea pigs are short hair or hairless and breeds include rexes, himalayans and skinny pigs. They come from a variety of backgrounds such as pet shop rescue centres, free ads, guinea pig rescues and breeders. Their names are: Bonnie, Zoe, Cassandra, Monika, Fiona, Philippa, Barbarella, Lacie, Willow, Buffy and Frankie.
Your Guinea pig on the pillow pet!!! SO CUTE!!
This video was great - I could listen to you talking about guinea pigs and watch your piggies milling around all day! Without sounding too weird haha. Glad you have found a bedding that works for you and your piggies :) I look forward to more videos!
Thanks. Yes, most definitely; it's a very interesting topic.
That was soooo cute when the brown & white guinea pig went on the pillow pet and yawned
Great video!!! Thank you... such a lovely life your piggies have!
I love the pillow pet in your cage xxxx
Thanks. It's nice to hear other people sharing my opinion. I'm still really tempted by the incontinence pads methode. Maybe I will give it a go in the future.
i love your videos when you talk i think there really good
Thanks. Glad you thought so.
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Love the video I got 2 Guinea pigs last week
Thank you. I will keep both of these suggestions in mind for future videos.
your piggies are sooo cute!!
Thanks. I get very passionate about some guinea pig topics. :)
Really helpful!
You must go through soooo much food and veggies as well :) and the new additions to the herd are so sweet too :)
This video was very informing :)
They seem to take turn in sleeping on them. It's so cute.
i have 3 guinea pigs and i use like a fleece type throw back from primark and i bought 3 of them and cut them to fit the bottom of the cage and my guinea's love it best thing i bought for them and is so much easy cleaning
Thanks for the suggestion. I don't have anything underneath the bedding as such. However we have lined the wooden cage with lino to protect the wood as much as possible.
thank you!
I think that's it's amazing that u keep 11 female guinea pigs together I had to separate my 3 !
Wow 11 pigs!! I like that they have a whole room to themselves, I wish I could do. This video was helpful for me, I don't have any guinea pigs yet and I'm still trying to decide what to use for bedding when I get them. Like you said everyone seems to have one they love but it's so hard to decide between them all and some are so expensive. I would like to use fleece but I'm afraid it's going to smell too quickly and need too much washing to be worth it.
thanks you!
Great video! I have shaky hands too, I need to get a tripod lol. I agree with you that vetbed is the best bedding,it's expensive to buy, buy lasys for ages. I have been using it for about 9 years and only recently have had to replace it. Incontinence pads work well under fleece, but like vetbed that are bulky to wash. I have both vetbed and fleece (with incontince pads underneath) in my cages and the pigs definitely prefer to sleep on the vetbed.
The best thing i have found are kylies, they use them in nursing homes for oldies who wet the bed and they stay that dry on top u dont need to change them except for a weekly wash, I have 2 of them and use them in 2 of my indoor cages.
You should be proud of it :) your easy to listen to.
Thanks for the information. It's great when you find something that really work, isn't it?
Each day I put some fresh easibed on top of the soiled areas. Once I week I remove all the bedding, wash the cage and fill it with new easibed. I also wash all fabrics once a week.
Thx for the nice vid
Thanks
I have to get a pillow pet for my guineas - look at the guinea on the pillow pet so cute!!!
just to add when i cut the throw back up i av got 6 pieces out of it so when we get down to the last 1 i wash the other 5 so keeping them clean is really easy n cheap yet my guinea pigs love it
ps hopefully my comments help you
thanks now im going to do that with my gpigs
I love ur vids ;)
I use Care Fresh natural paper bedding. I have been using it since I got my guinea pig (Which has been around 3-5 weeks now. Hoping to expand the cage...
Slothz hckrbud
I love your videos :) Could you do a video on their diet?
you're welcome.
I really liked your video! Thank you for telling us what you tried in the past. Are all your guinea pigs female? Which food do you use and what do you think is best for topping up with Vitamin C? I never saw that kind of water bottle before - do you advocate adding anything to the water or not? Please can you write the names of the bedding you use? They look very happy and healthy, and I guess you have to watch where you step! I enjoyed seeing them in your setup, thanks again! :)
I think it belonged to a sleeping bag. Anything thin will work. Some people use a duvet cover and just tie it with a knot.
The siamese guinea pigs are called himalayans. I wanted to get one for years but found they are rather hard to come by. It depends on where you are located but I certainly found it harder to get one than skinny pigs even though they are regular show breeds.
Cont.U can use them under ur horse bedding,or fleece or vet bed,but hide them well as the piggies may nibble them! I use this under my beddings,:)
Thanks. I think one of the reasons I don't usually talk in my videos is that I have a really thick accent which I just cannot get rid of. I'm originally from Luxembourg but have lived for a number of years in Scotland now.
Cont.Ive got 2 piggies a hymalayan like urs but mine has lighter markings & is a boar,& the other is a black with white hip pocket teddy very sweet natured,
Canu do a video on how u built your cage and how you made it safe for your guinea pigs to Rome free and what the best the best room to do that in was thx
I would love to see how you clean that cage...I had a custom cage too.what is under the bedding?
Omg was that piggy bald? That was so cute.
+Maddison Jones yes that piggy has no hair its called a Skinneypig they are born with out hair
Hi huggies dry nights beds mats u get 7 for £3 there much much bigger than puppy pads thicker too as designed for toddler/child beds, tesco & waitrose sell them
Cont.Lest i think hes a teddy,i did think he was a merano as a baby as his fur was just like wool, but its gone much straighter still crinkly and v thick& bouncy
What kind of bag do you put the fleece in?
how and how often do you clean the guinea pig cage?
The close caption instead of saying saw dust it say sodas 😂😂😂😂😂
How many inches of bedding do I need?
What bedding for six pigs in one cage?
Can guinea pigs use sawdust
I use vet bed, easy to wash and saves me a fortune in bedding
can I use some old tea towels for bedding?
Ik u wernt asking me but I have two piggies of my own and yes that is fine however u would need to change it every couple of days otherwise it will get smelly! U might also want to put newspaper underneath for extra protection under the cage Hope this helped :)
But towels collect pee, so it would get wet. Some people use towels under and fleece on top, so that the pee goes through the fleece and into the towels. And they're not standing on pee.
Yes u can put towels down but I don't recommend it . Guinea pigs can't really control their bladders so they will use the toilet a lot and every where and the towels will get smelly and if not changed once a day can lead to Guinea pigs getting infections and all that kinda stuff . As long as u change the towels a lot and line the cage with newspaper then u will be fine but I personally prefer to use newspaper with a thick layer of sawdust or shredded newspaper with straw as bedding and hay in a hay wrack on the wall .
Can I Use Bin cages ???
Angel kho too small for guinea pigs good for hamsters tho
and how rare are siamese guinea pigs - you have beautiful pigs BTW
Where do you buy easibed from?
You can buy it from Amazon or Ebay
The person who did the video got it from her local farm feed shop
Is straw safe for Guinea Pigs?
No, it can damage their eyes and digestive system. They will not eat it if that was what u were planning on doing. Its about the same price as hay anyway. Hope this helped!
Yes straw is safe for Guinea pigs as bedding to keep warm , it's good to use in winter months or if our Guinea pigs live permanently outside . I use straw as bedding and hay as part of their diet . If it gets in their eyes or nose then it can easily just fall out , my Guinea pigs like to burrow and they get straw and hay all over them so a quick grooming with a brush solves it .
my guinea pig is eating its bedding and its like shavings of wood and its small
Guinea pigs tend to sneeze when they have wood shavings in their pen/cage etc. It stands to reason. Cannot understand why people don't stick to hay and fleece. My piggies hardly ever sneeze.Wood shavings and sawdust are not recommended for several reasons, including dust, which can cause breathing problems, rough texture (shavings), which can ulcerate the feet, oils (with a strong smell) that can affect the skin and respiratory system.

what is a vet bed?
How to hack the pentagon with a toaster Vet Bed is the thing that looked like a piece of carpet on top of one of the houses in this video. It is a soft absorbent material similar to using fleece but more absorbent and I believe the bottom is water proof so you don't need to line the bottom like with fleece.
Τι είναι?
TOO MANY CUTIES (In a good way.)
You could've put the hutch inside you know...
