All About Guinea Pig Bedding

  • In this video I'm discussing various bedding options for guinea pigs. I have tried various types of bedding over the years, but I mostly focus on my top 3 choices in this video:
    1. Vet Bed:
    This is my all time favourite bedding. In my optinion it's the best bedding for guinea pigs. However there are some drawbacks which make it unfortunately unsuitable for me as an owner for the majority of my cage.
    2. Easibed
    This is a dust free wood fibre bedding typically used for horses. It's very soft and very absorbend. It's what I'm using at the moment and I get it from a local farm feed shop.
    3. Fleece
    Most of you will be familiar with fleece as bedding. It has many advantages and I used it for a number of years. One of the main reason I stopped using it is that it seems to cause eye issues for one of my skinny pigs.
    I have personally used each of these three types of bedding and favour them above other types. The one I would recommend the most is vet bed. It's amazing stuff and even after many years still my favourite.
    The Guinea Pig's Herd Facebook channel:
    / theguineapigherd
    About the herd:
    The Guinea Pig Herd consists of 11 female guinea pigs who all live together in a custom build enclosure in our dining room. They can jump out of their cage at all times and free range across our house. Our youngest guinea pig is 6 months old, our oldest ones are getting close to 5. All of our guinea pigs are short hair or hairless and breeds include rexes, himalayans and skinny pigs. They come from a variety of backgrounds such as pet shop rescue centres, free ads, guinea pig rescues and breeders. Their names are: Bonnie, Zoe, Cassandra, Monika, Fiona, Philippa, Barbarella, Lacie, Willow, Buffy and Frankie.

    Wow 11 pigs!! I like that they have a whole room to themselves, I wish I could do. This video was helpful for me, I don't have any guinea pigs yet and I'm still trying to decide what to use for bedding when I get them. Like you said everyone seems to have one they love but it's so hard to decide between them all and some are so expensive. I would like to use fleece but I'm afraid it's going to smell too quickly and need too much washing to be worth it.

    Great video! I have shaky hands too, I need to get a tripod lol. I agree with you that vetbed is the best bedding,it's expensive to buy, buy lasys for ages. I have been using it for about 9 years and only recently have had to replace it. Incontinence pads work well under fleece, but like vetbed that are bulky to wash. I have both vetbed and fleece (with incontince pads underneath) in my cages and the pigs definitely prefer to sleep on the vetbed.

    The best thing i have found are kylies, they use them in nursing homes for oldies who wet the bed and they stay that dry on top u dont need to change them except for a weekly wash, I have 2 of them and use them in 2 of my indoor cages.

    I really liked your video! Thank you for telling us what you tried in the past. Are all your guinea pigs female? Which food do you use and what do you think is best for topping up with Vitamin C? I never saw that kind of water bottle before - do you advocate adding anything to the water or not? Please can you write the names of the bedding you use? They look very happy and healthy, and I guess you have to watch where you step! I enjoyed seeing them in your setup, thanks again! :)

    I think it belonged to a sleeping bag. Anything thin will work. Some people use a duvet cover and just tie it with a knot.

    @Zoebabies  Před 11 lety

    The siamese guinea pigs are called himalayans. I wanted to get one for years but found they are rather hard to come by. It depends on where you are located but I certainly found it harder to get one than skinny pigs even though they are regular show breeds.

    • @monah4107
      @monah4107 Před 8 lety

      But towels collect pee, so it would get wet. Some people use towels under and fleece on top, so that the pee goes through the fleece and into the towels. And they're not standing on pee.

    • @zoecarrington2218
      @zoecarrington2218 Před 7 lety +1

      Yes u can put towels down but I don't recommend it . Guinea pigs can't really control their bladders so they will use the toilet a lot and every where and the towels will get smelly and if not changed once a day can lead to Guinea pigs getting infections and all that kinda stuff . As long as u change the towels a lot and line the cage with newspaper then u will be fine but I personally prefer to use newspaper with a thick layer of sawdust or shredded newspaper with straw as bedding and hay in a hay wrack on the wall .

    • @ellaroseanimals0125
      @ellaroseanimals0125 Před 9 lety +3

      No, it can damage their eyes and digestive system. They will not eat it if that was what u were planning on doing. Its about the same price as hay anyway. Hope this helped!

    • @zoecarrington2218
      @zoecarrington2218 Před 7 lety

      Yes straw is safe for Guinea pigs as bedding to keep warm , it's good to use in winter months or if our Guinea pigs live permanently outside . I use straw as bedding and hay as part of their diet . If it gets in their eyes or nose then it can easily just fall out , my Guinea pigs like to burrow and they get straw and hay all over them so a quick grooming with a brush solves it .

      Guinea pigs tend to sneeze when they have wood shavings in their pen/cage etc. It stands to reason. Cannot understand why people don't stick to hay and fleece. My piggies hardly ever sneeze.Wood shavings and sawdust are not recommended for several reasons, including dust, which can cause breathing problems, rough texture (shavings), which can ulcerate the feet, oils (with a strong smell) that can affect the skin and respiratory system.

      How to hack the pentagon with a toaster Vet Bed is the thing that looked like a piece of carpet on top of one of the houses in this video. It is a soft absorbent material similar to using fleece but more absorbent and I believe the bottom is water proof so you don't need to line the bottom like with fleece.
